The Bridge Arms is nestled within the beautiful rural village of Bridge situated within the Nailbourne Valley 2.5km South of the cathedral city of Canterbury. Originally a coaching inn, The Bridge Arms dates back to the 16th century, once a baiting house the grade II listed pub boasts large original fireplaces for the winter months and sparse outside garden with outside bar for the warmer summer months.This iconic pub has undergone a transformation under the new ownership of Daniel and Natasha Smith (owners of The Michelin Starred Fordwich Arms) in 2021, restoring the pub to its former glory. Now run by Elliot Hewitt who has steered many successful restaurants such as, The Fordwich Arms, The Rose & The Blue Pelican. Bringing you delicious food in a relaxed atmosphere.

The first evidence of an inn at the site dates back to 1642 but the surrounding area of Seasalter was entered in the Domesday Book as belonging to the kitchens of Canterbury Cathedral. Even then it was an area of food production, farmed by the monks, supplying produce for the influx of religious tourists after the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170.We took over The Sportsman in November 1999 with the intention of serving good food in relaxed and informal surroundings. We have held a Michelin star since 2008.Following the monks’ example we let the area around the pub dictate what we cook. Behind us, the Thames Estuary, leading out to the North Sea, provides oysters and fish, and in front, marshland, woods and fertile soils give us meat, vegetables and game. We also grow some ingredients ourselves. A small kitchen garden and now polytunnels, mean we can cook with fruit and vegetables that benefit from being picked only moments before use.

    Excellent food and service, a real treat if you are going out for a special occasion. We went mid-week and the ambience was calm and (generally) quiet with helpful and efficient staff. One star dropped due to food portions being rather meagre considering the price, and the table of 6 next to us feeling the need to shout all of their conversations even though they were sitting right next to each other. Not the fault of The Dog but it did impact our evening out. Overall a very pleasant venue for first class food and drink, highly recommended.

    Absolutely fantastic , had a wonderful lunch with friends , chose to set in the garden as it was a glorious day . Your young front of house/ manager / waiting staff ( he was doing it all ) was so welcoming and accommodating. He took great care of us and the food was superb. We will be back . We just live round the corner so very easy for us . Great job !

    This is the first time we had been to this restaurant and it did not disappoint, service was great along with amazing tasting food at great value. Variety of wines and other alcoholic beverages, along with a great kids menu for people that need it. The restaurant was calm, quiet and decorated well. We loved our dinner & will definitely be back! Thank you guys x
