Vermilion - Alexandria
We love eating upstairs but many of the tables are so softly lighted that you cannot readily ready the menu.
My first visit to Vermillion was for Sunday brunch. Our lovely server suggested the prix fixe option which included a first course and main (good tip!). My partner and I each ordered different combinations so that we could share. Each dish -- the fall salad, the smoked salmon benedict, the house-made stracciatella, and the halibut with chanterelles was beautiful and perfectly prepared. The food and service were outstanding without breaking the bank. Can't wait to go back!
Nice restaurant. Limited menu. Halibut was not memorable. Service was good.
I was in Old Town Alexandria during Veterans Day weekend and dined here two of three. Highly recommend!
Waitress was great and very personable. Wine flight paired nicely with the meal which was delicious and the perfect portion size. Dessert was amazing - get the tart! I would definitely recommend and return.
Whenever I'm in the Washington DC / Old Town Alexandria, VA area I always dine at Vermillion. Great seasonal offerings from local produce/sources. Excellent wine and dessert options too. I highly recommend!
Always amazing food and our last visit was no exception. Chef recommended the fois gras pate and the pigeon. Not your average 'hanging out in the park, sky rat pigeon"...nope this was amazing. Much better taste then even squab (and I don't say that lightly). All in all, a wonderful dinner (once again). It's food like this that keeps us coming back.
A little dark and hard to see my friends against the windows, but my eyes are aging. Otherwise, it was a perfect brunch experience. Get the hushpuppies!
We selected Vermilion for a dinner with some friends visiting from Paris. The hostess was very kind and helpful in ensuring we were seated in a nicely located table at the time of our reservation despite the crowded atmosphere.
The food and wine selection are outstanding.
The service however leaves much to be desired. In Europe (where we often travel) the service is as important as the food. We were disappointed and will think twice before we bring other guests there.
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Vermillion. The service was above and beyond!
Food and service was good. It’s just loud everywhere which if that’s your thing then fine. For us it took away from the experience. To each their own.
I felt as if our waiter was treating us like just another table to take care of. I don't need to be waited on and gushed over but showing some interest in making our dinner experience special would have helped make the dinner more enjoyable. Dinner was good.
It was a bit too dark in the dining area. Almost impossible to read the menu.
The management & staff made our anniversary extra spectacular!
Fantastic highly recommend this restaurant in old town. Loved the warm almond tart dessert ! Scallops were good and my friends had squash and a great pasta dish. Interesting flavors and superb presentation The server was very kind and knowledgeable would definitely come back if I lived in the area
I prefer dining upstairs it was quieter
Amazing restaurant with Michelin star-level food and fantastic service, ambiance, and location. Can't wait to return for the next seasonal menu.
Exceptional food, exceptional service!
Consistently good; wine pairing is very interesting
Red snapper was served barely warm, floppy rubbery skin, under seasoned. NY strip came rare when I ordered medium rare. Not even sure it was a NY strip honestly, it looked like a hanger steak to me. Prices too high for this quality of food .
Great food, fun restaurant. Server (thin guy) was super arrogant.
Great service , wonderful flavors in salad , fish , appetizers. Perfect upstairs for conversation.
We live in Old Town, but had never been to Vermilion until last Sunday and we left wondering what took us so long! It's a delightful restaurant; wonderful "old world" ambiance, extremely attentive service and excellent food. We will back!
Staff were great and worked hard to please us when we asked to change tables. Food was terrific. Kale salad was great. Steak and scallops were the mains. Both fine perfectly. We had bread plates but bread wasn’t offered which seemed unusual. I had to ask for water twice. Staff were hustling all night. Noise level makes it hard to hear when it’s busy.
Everything was perfect.
We had a great time there for an anniversary. The food was delicious - we had the bone marrow toast, a pasta, the scallops and flourless chocolate cake. The restaurant went out of it's way to wish us a happy anniversary! The restaurant was fairly cozy and while we were sitting in the dining area this time, we will definitely be back to hang out in the lounge area. Highly recommend for a quiet, delicious dinner!
We went to Vermilion several times last year and it was fabulous. I understand that the restaurant is under new management and it unfortunately definitely shows. It was not a bad meal, but the food quality has noticeable suffered. The server was particularly helpful in helping us understand the menu as I have some food allergies, but we may opt for some other spots in Old Town before going back to this one.
We enjoyed our dinner very much. The food and service were fantastic, and it was a very good value. We will be back!
Food and service were excellent! However, the hostess could use some work as she was not personable and was actually quite rude. I know it's a tough job but she's the first interaction customers encounter with so I'd encourage her to smile and be engaging.
The scallops were very good. Several people had them. They came with a veal cheek (?) and some radishes. One person had a drink and said it was very good. They ate lots of bread.. They said the waitress was very good. We had a reservation and were glad we did, as many were waiting.
Interesting parings, very flavorful, attractively presented, great service, wonderful little extras in recognition of our celebration.
Good energy but a little loud if you were seeking a quiet meal.
My wife and I went there for the first time tonight for our anniversary dinner. Every aspect of the experience was AMAZING. Andrew, our server was very knowledgeable and made incredible suggestions. Tricia, the manager suggested a dessert that was to die for. Definitely going back.
Waiter seemed overwhelmed. Everything else was superb.
This is the seventh or eighth time we have been to Vermilion and it won’t be the last! I’ve written before that you always know what you’re going to get here.
The N.Y. Strip and Amish Chicken was cooked to perfection and were a great entree to follow the soup and fall salad.
The selection and creativity in ice cream and sorbets are adventurous, surprising and delectable and don’t miss the flourless chocolate cake.
Well done Vermilion-see you again soon
I requested the table by the window on the second floor a week in advance. Instead when we arrived we were offered a table at the BACK of the room. It’s like the request was never even acknowledged. We were moved forward to a table directly under an air conditioning vent not by the window. This is the first time restaurant staff did not honor my request for a table. The evening was a bust. I had sung the praises of Vermillion to my out-of-town guests but I was embarrassed by the lack of consideration we were shown.
We had a 5 star server who knew everything about every item on the menu. He guided us based on our food preferences. My daughter had the 5 course vegetarian tasting menu and my husband had the 5 course regular tasting menu. If you are a vegetarian -- or not -- this is the most wonderful place. Not the same old veggie stuff, but fresh, interesting and incredibly tasty. The regular tasting menu was also over the top and the wine selections were spot on. I ordered a pork entree and was totally immersed in the various textures, tastes and composition of the entire dish....kudos to the Chef and staff. And I cannot forget the almond tart...I thought only in Iceland did they put salt on ice cream. But they did it here with a tart I am dreaming about! We will be back. Well done Vermilion!
Fixed price launch is a great deal, whether for two courses or three. Duck wing – – actually duck leg – – appetizer and chestnut soup were excellent. Shrimp salad and hanger steak were excellent, but accompanying salads were drowned in dressing and therefore limp. The waitress forgot to check and see what the steak marinade consisted of.
Service was Beyond Outstanding. Food Extraordinary.
We are big Vermillion fans. This was one of the most memorable meals ever.
I had the Pulled pork and my friend eggplant. Dessert -- flourless chocolate cake -- divine.
Very friendly and attentive server (Anna). Food ok but not the prices — too expensive. Ambiance lacking (see view/photo from our table). Bathrooms need updating.
Hey Vern, Thanks for the feedback and review. We hear you loud and clear about the ambiance and restrooms and are working on making them the best they can be. We appreciate you letting us know your thoughts.
