The West House
This was a birthday treat for my husband and was a fantastic experience.
Beautiful food with matched wines, perfect evening.
Never disappointed, as ever an excellent meal, introduced two friends to lunch, and they are looking forward to their next visit, remarkable value for money for a Michelin star lunch.
I had a two course dinner for £38. There was an amuse bouche of a cheese gougere covered in Parmesan, which was pleasant.
My first course was Ceviche of scallops with a fairly strong lime dressing, followed by a main of Sika venison, which was more enjoyable.
The wine choice was excellent for such an establishment.
The waiter was very attentive and friendly.
It warranted its Michelin star.
Superb taster menu and good value, would definitely recommend
The food combinations are fantastic.
Not big servings, but perfectly proportioned.
Service and ambience are familiar and welcoming.
For what it offers, not stupidly expensive.
Can’t recommend it highly enough.
High quality food with the mixture of tradition and modern technique. Friendly service and interesting wine list were also memorable.
Excellent meal, with quietly efficient service. We particularly appreciated the length of the list of wines that could be ordered in the 4 glass size carafe - just right!
Overall good, but having been to different Rosette/ Michelon star restaurants before, this one didn’t particularly stand out
Also in terms of service the staff is really nice and friendly, but lacks a bit of attention to detail. For instance, when we arrived we were served bread, butter and olives. We waited to touch it until we would receive the chosen wine, but the waiter took our plates away before we could even try the mini starters. Resulting in crumbles everywhere...
The set menu was good, but nothing that we have already tried with more creativity
We came for my husband’s birthday as a special treat and had a delicious meal. Would highly recommend!
Superb from start to finish.
Exceptional service the moment walked through the door. Food was 👌🏻
Highly recommend to anyone
We were lucky to get a table at short notice. This is definitely one of our favourite restaurants. Wonderful!!
Had a really enjoyable taster menu (meat)
Servicing was good
A pleasant luncheon was enjoyed and the time taken over the meal was unhurried. Possibly it could be regarded as a costly, but enjoyable, venue; we would certainly book again.
Visited for the first time for my birthday and was not disappointed with service, food and welcome. Wine list is extensive and very knowledgable advise when describing and pairing the wines if required. Fantastic evening
Food was beautifully cooked and very tasty BUT felt portions could have been more generous. A whole small tart for desert would have been preferable to half a tart and 2 medallions of venison as opposed to 1 very small one for the main course. BUT food was very tasty and we did not feel hungry when we left. But would have enjoyed the whole experience more if portion size was just a little bit more generous.
Lovely dinner and great service!
Reasonable prize for a Michelin star restaurant.
Thank you so much to all at The West House for making a special evening for my wife and all the more so.
We hope that it won't be long before we can come back again.
We enjoyed an excellent lunch to celebrate my birthday. The tasting menu was varied and full of flavour, and the accompanying wines complemented each course perfectly.
Great service provided front of house by Jake and Jackie too.
We had invited friends to join us for lunch and it would have been inappropriate to spoil the occasion by complaining. The food was pretentious but poor. The portion sizes were almost laughable. I'm sure the chef had fun but we did not enjoy it. We particularly asked for the lamb to be cooked more than the chef would normally like. When presented, the lamb was virtually raw, the fat was not rendered, slimy and inedible.
The first time my wife and I have dined at The West House.
Very pleasant decor and general ambience, the wood burning stove was most welcome. We were greeted warmly and our coats were taken whilst we decided where we wanted to sit, there was only one other couple already seated. For me what differentiates a good restaurant from a great one is the service and I felt we were rushed. We hardly had time to take in the atmosphere before our orders were being taken and our hors d'oeuvres had arrived, they were delicious though!
The food was quite delicious, I had the terrine followed by the Lamb and my wife had the Haddock followed by the Venison. The wine list was a delight and very extensive (Certainly off piste enough to challenge even the most pretentious Criminal Barrister and his new younger wife/cliché, out trying to impress their new neighbours!)
I'd certainly recommend The West House and will be returning again soon with my twenty-something children who also appreciate deliciously cooked/presented, locally sourced, seasonal dishes.
We always enjoy eating at The West House and on this occasion, Sunday lunch did not disappoint!
As always a lovely experience with excellent food and service in a lovely setting. Really looked after us and great and unexpected touch of a happy birthday cake! Highly recommend
This was our second visit to The West House. The staff are very friendly and it is a lovely relaxing atmosphere.
The food is beautifully cooked and presented and the flavours work so well together. We were served delicious homemade bread with olives and a cheese choux pastry while we chose from the menu. There is a good choice including vegetarian options.
The wine list is extensive with many available by the glass.
Definitely worth the 45 minute drive and we will be back. Thank you for a lovely birthday lunch.
This is one of the best restaurants in Kent. And it is better than anything immediately on the other side of the Channel. We go there fairly regularly and it never disappoints.
Absolutely excellent food, brilliant service and really good value
Definitely a place to go and celebrate. We thought the surrounds were rekaxed, as was the style if the guys serving. Delicious bread! Portion sizes in the small size for the men in our party. Why be stingy with vegetables!!
Absolutely fantastic food and the service was fantastic as well will definitely be going again was my wife birthday and they brought out a small cake for her which was a lovely touch
Treated my boyfriend to a tasting menu and wine pairing for his birthday. Top class food and brilliantly matched wines. We were made to feel welcome and really enjoyed our dinner. Would definitely go back.
Excellent meal and beautifully presented tasty food. Very pleasant unobtrusive staff. Lovely ambiance and perfect for daughter's birthday - all in all a great evening!
On arrival, we were welcomed and seated promptly at our table, and offered an amuse-bouche, along with a basket of home made bread, served with butter and also pork dripping. This was really delicious; the sourdough was chewy and its crust dense and crisp, as it should be. The pork dripping was unusual and full of flavour.
Unfortunately, this turned out to be the high point of the meal.
The food was of good quality, but not particularly interesting in flavour - the veal, for example, is not a patch on that you find in Cinnamon Club, seeming to lack a little seasoning. And the portions... well, I know one doesn't expect a gut-busting platter in a Michelin-starred restaurant, but when the bill for lunch for two (one of whom did not have a starter) comes to not far short of £150, you also hope not to be leaving the place wondering what you've got at home for dinner.
What you do, of course, expect is exceptional service - and unfortunately, we were underwhelmed in this regard too. We've eaten on a number of occasions at the Sundial in Herstmonceux, not that far away. Here, the welcome is always genuine and warm - not just because that's what the service reference manual says it should be, but because they're always really happy to see you. Here the food is - as it should be - introduced and explained, so that you know what you're about to eat (often I'll be trying something I've not had before, and I'll want to know what's what. Occasionally, I'll have forgotten what I ordered, and I'll need reminding!). Sadly, at the West House, the food was simply put in front of us, and then the server left. Not even the name of the dish, let alone its constituent elements, was given to us.
So yes, it was good. But that's all - and I had hoped for special. I had a lunch in a fairly standard café in London today which cost less than 25% of the price and left me significantly more satisfied.
As always consistently excellent, great food excellent wine and great service.
Excellent meal as always. Superb customer service. The West House know how to look after you, and make every visit special. Would highly recommend
Outstanding in all aspects creative and perfectly executed
An excellent choice for a special occasion meal in quiet, comfort surroundings with superb food, wine and service.
Excellent food service and ambience. Good value for top class food. Well conceived and prepared and presented menu. Couldn't find anything we did not like about our evening out.
This is a really enjoyable restaurant. Careful cooking and presentation achieving high standards. Really nice family. Relaxed, calm, snug, charming room.
A small and cosy restaurant who’s food would be easily at home in a smart London venue. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the staff made us feel very welcome. Outstanding food using local produce. Excellent and have already recommended to anyone who will listen. We’ll be returning soon.
We both enjoyed the full tasting menu , one of us including the wine too (which were very well chosen). Pre-dinner coupe de champagne excellent quality. Excellent service, nothing too much trouble, but not intrusive. Popular and busy restaurant on a Friday evening, in spite of top-end prices. We enjoyed the whole experience and will come again.
Outstanding as usual. We will be back soon and will probably stay over in one of their rooms
An excellent meal at a reasonable price, with friendly efficient service. We particularly valued the 50cl wine carafe that suited us & extended beyond a small house wine range.
