While the food was pretty good (which I think is table stakes at a michelin star joint), I was fairly un-impressed with the overall package relative to the "hype." The restaurant has a very James Bond Casino Royale style and the bar isn't over-packed with people, however, my two biggest issues were:
1) I didn't love that the servers kept coming over to ask if we wanted 40 dollar supplemental caviar, or 20 dollar truffle or that you had to choose between uni or wagyu but if you wanted both, there was an up-charge. We're pretty price insensitive when it comes to sushi but we hate feeling nickle and dimed at places. Also - doesn't omakase imply that the chef chooses? Not sure why they felt the need to keep asking us about ways to charge more. We would have much preferred to be charged 220 bucks vs 150 a person and just include everything.
2) We would have liked more engagement from the sushi chefs. They pretty much run an assembly line and the chef who is in front of you doesn't actually serve you so there is another sushi chef that pretty much drops off the piece and then runs to the next person and drops off their piece. They have the waitress explain the piece behind you which means you are turning back and forth all night.
The food was exquisite. I enjoyed the add-ons as well. I got there maybe 20 minutes early but since we were dining at the sushi bar, we had to wait for the other diners which I totally understand. As the chef plates a piece on your plate, he will tell you what it is, then there will be a staff member behind you telling you what type of fish, sauce used and where the fish was sourced from.

Second time sitting at the sushi bar, and it was just as amazing as the first. Every course has been perfected, the order in which they are presented has been fine tuned, and the art of sushi has been mastered.
Food and service were exceptional but one suggestion for an improved experience would be to print out the menu which is always an elegant touch. I believe it would be a straightforward process as everyone is having the same menu with the exception of supplements.
Have been several times. Pieces were not great this visit. Very disappointed and also unfortunately become very ill today (my husband and I) after consumption
What a FANTASTIC experience! It was our second time dining at Sushi Nakazawa and we loved it. It met every expectation and the service was wonderful. We look forward to dining here again!
This was my favorite restaurant in the city - no questions asked! But, I don’t think I will ever go back after this last visit. The quality of the fish was far below what I’ve come to expect from Sushi Nakazawa and the service, while great, has evolved into an up sell machine. We were offered 4/5 chances for supplemental pieces throughout the meal. That included the starter. It’s not the same place that it once was.
Unmatched sushi experience. Loved trying things I normally would not order. Exceptional caviar with gold leaf, Uni, Wagyu beef with black truffle. Everything was amazing. A must try when in NYC.
Unparalleled sushi dining experience. Wine pairing by sommelier Anthony was excellent. Absolutely delicious omakase. Go here for a special occasion, sit at the counter if you can get a reservation. One of the best meals I’ve had in my life.
Finely and artfully prepared omakase sushi. Freshest if i gradients and nuanced flavours make for a unique and authentic sushi experience, on par with the finest sushi in Japan. Service is quietly attentive as well.
I had an absolutely exquisite time at Sushi Nakazawa celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. The staff was incredibly attentive and our meal at the sushi counter was out-of-this-world. We chose to add the sake pairings as well which all fit perfectly with our meal. I left leaving full, content and with a new set of knowledge about sushi and sake that I hadn't known before. It made our commute to the restaurant in sub-zero temperatures more than worth it! I can't wait to return for another round :)

I had forgotten how unpleasant the experience was when I first tried it when it first opened. The staff comes with an exaggerated attitude. You can barely comprehend the English of the Japanese gentleman who Repeats what the chef says each time. The place smells of Strongfish. I have to concede that the quality of the fish is good and the chef master sushi Master is nice.

Sushi Nakazawa brings to life the best of Japan's most famous sushi chef Jiro. The experience is unparalleled on so many fronts. You know there is a special evening ahead as you approach searching in vain for a restaurant without it's name prominently displayed. The real definition of a hidden gem located in old New York on Commerce St., a secluded and sedate area. The sushi bar allows for the full bore omakase menu experience. The entire restaurant aims to please with attentive, not overbearing service by a professionally trained staff. The 5 sushi chefs behind the counter each operate as vital parts of a well-oiled machine. The sushi is fresh, varied, well-prepared and as authentic as could be imagined. The quality of fish stands apart from even the most reputable NYC spots renown for sushi.
The option to sit in the dining room offers less entertainment, but no less satisfaction from the perfectly prepared offerings. The Omakase at the counter is the way to go for up close and personal attention and observation to the masters at work. I believe reso's can be made one month in advance for seating at the bar, so plan ahead you will enjoy every moment of this experience.
Sushi Nakazawa impresses you with a modern presentation of classic and delicately prepared sushi. The service was fantastic and the wait staff attentive in a beautifully simple postmodern dining space. The sushi experience itself however falls beneath the standard of other fine dining sushi establishments across the city. The only two flavor profiles put on for the omakase meal was citrus and smoke. The rice, which is considered essential to nigiri, was much too wet and did not help elevate the flavor of the fish. Overall much too subtle and bland. I really expected to be floored by this sushi but it was more pomp than profound. Even the chef's signature dish, the tamago (egg cake) for which he wept in joy as he received his master's praise in the movie "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," was underwhelming. Skip this one.
This is far and away the finest Sushi restaurant I've had the pleasure to dine at in New York City. The quality and creativity of the menu combined with the extraordinary service make this a stand out dining experience. There is nothing about the meal that I did not enjoy.
I heard that Mr. Nakazawa was a student from chef Ono Jiro. But I can’t believe it. First of all, rice was not well cooked. Therefore, fish and rice couldn’t combine in the mouse. And the rice was too sour. I never felt rice’s sweet taste because of the too much sour taste. In addition, Chef Ono Jiro is one of the best sushi masters. He thought that for sushi master earning money is not the important thing. He said the best important thing for the sushi master is serving best sushi to guests. But I wasn’t able to see Mr. Nakazawa in his restaurant. It is too natural for sushi master making sushi himself. I felt he want to make business. He doesn’t want to be a great sushi master like his sensei. I really disappointed because I expected to enjoy great sushi; however, I was not able to get great sushi. I really want to ask Mr. Nakazawa to be a great sushi master and making all sushi himself. His staff can prepare food ingredients, but he has to taste all ingredients and make sushi himself. If he owns two restaurants, how can he make all sushi himself? Select one restaurant and focus just on one. Please remember what Mr. Ono Jiro said.

The omakase meal was excellent and priced fairly. What made the meal even more special was the service, which was flawless, and the ambiance, which was serene. The sake by glass is a bit pricey, but not outrageous given comparable restaurants. Overall, it was a great experience that I'd highly recommend.
Met every expectation I had and then some. It's pricey but a much more affordable omakase compared to other hyped Japanese establishments in Manhattan. And they source about 20% of the fish and seafood locally which is cool. It's worth every penny, in my opinion.

Really good sushi, but they forgot to do anything for my Japanese guest’s birthday despite saying over text (attached) they would include a candle.
They blew me off after I texted about it and haven’t responded to an email since a week now. John Shin, the manager, gave a half hearted apology over the phone and isn’t really good at his job, given this is all documented. The place was better before team Nakazawa sent Cody Nason to manage the DC restaurant. Surprising behavior for a restaurant with a Michelin Star. Avoid for special events.
We had a wonderful experience at Nakazawa- the staff were friendly, courteous, professional. Food was amazing- I'd highly recommend it for a special occasion and ultimate sushi experience.
