Understaffed. Very long wait for food. Service was good but servers and cooks could not keep up. I would not recommend this restaurant until they get staffing under control. Several tables were so frustrated they got up and left.
We were going to have lunch here but decided to have drinks and only share one appetizer because the waitress said the chef wanted us to order everything at once and they will pace it how they want to. I don't like that. At all. It's my meal and I am paying. I want to order different courses when I am ready for them and don't like to be rushed. Won't be eating here again if that is their new standard.
We chose waterfront seating outdoors to take in the sea air, marvel at all the boats in the Marina and people-watch. Our server, Maggie, was great and cared that we had a good time and always returned to make sure everything was as we like it. I had the butterfish, which I've ordered every time (except when they have lobster tail specials). There's nothing in this world better tasting than Roy's butterfish, which we first tasted at Roy's in Kahana(?), Hawaii. Roy's waterfront is our go-to location for birthdays and anniversarys.
Our service from the hostess stand to our server were great, that would have us go back and try at least one more time! Our issues were that not one, not two, but 4 wines that we ordered weren't available. The wines we replaced my wives wine with was okay at best, no comparison to the others we were going to order. Our server comped it which we appreciated, but we never got a good wine and we weren't about to go from bottle to bottle. When our food arrived which was the butter-fish, it very well cooked, but both were room temp at best and the bokchoy was over cooked. It was very busy and we were happy they were, there was a concert happening at The Shell which we attended, so next time I will attempt to go when there is nothing going on to see if things are to the level we expected. The view and atmosphere are hard to beat and man are their restaurants w views in SD, so a small step and we'll be happy to write a great review.
The fish was cold and we were rushed by our waiter.
Food great, water great, prices a bit high but ok, time long ish wait, felt like they wanted us out of there but food took a while
Zack is the BEST, wonderful service, came to our table many times to check, was very prompt, funny, sociable, caring and very respectful.
Offered us options, told us about the food, drinks overall an excellent service.
Overall very good food, just a long wait to get your food.
Always enjoy Roy's, drinks a little off this time with mix and chefs special cheesecake was about Bite-sized. First time with some dissatisfaction in 3 years of going for a sunset dinner but will most definitely return
The food was well prepared but was not served warm/hot. The Caesar salad was fair; the fish was fresh and tasty. The accompanying vegetables were cold and disappointing. The portion size was adequate.
The window view seats provided a great view. If you’re in the city or staying at The Marriott, Roy’s provides a good dining option. We drove into the city to use a gift certificate we had been given and to celebrate our anniversary. Parking was difficult and expensive. The signs in the hotel were insufficient and we ended up walking around the whole pool complex to get to the restaurant. At our age, that was frustrating.
The restaurant was very crowded with a line out the door waiting for tables and causing congestion. The only ones wearing masks were the serving staff. No one in the congested pool area was masked. The tables in Roy’s are not six feet apart in every area.
Great location with beautiful view. Food was way overpriced, smaller portions and mediocre tasting.
Roy’s is the place where you cures your Hawaiian Nostalgia, it’s like being in Hawaii without jumping on the airplane. The food, drinks and overall atmosphere is just PERFECT!
Special Mahalo to Ms. Holiday for her services at the table!
Have been going to Roy's for years. Wonderful location, could not ask for better service. The sea bass was excellent. We all (3) order it. Unfortunately one of us got sick. He is the one with the cast iron stomach. Maybe just a coincidence.
Very helpful staff, who managed to get us a great table even though we were half an hour early. Excellent menu, all brilliantly created.
The staff as attentive. The service was good. Food came quickly. The patio was fantastic. Great view. The staff wore masks and did ]their best to protect the public.
Everything was great, we celebrated a birthday and will do it again.
Roy’s in San Diego is one of our very favorite restaurants and usually it’s outstanding. However, this time it was just the opposite and we were very disappointed. It took 45 + minutes to get our wedge salads, the salmon was very dry, the Lobster potstickers were mushy/cold and you had no beer (except for light.) On top of all of this, the service was poor. Needless to say, we walked out very disappointed and not sure if we’ll be going back!
Our server made our first dining experience FANTASTIC! Brought food and drinks out so fast! Amazing service!
We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our waitress was professional and very courteous. Our dinner was served in a very timely manner and allowed us to have a leisurely and enjoyable dinner. All the employees we encountered should be commended on a job well done.
What a Setting with Incredible Service and Food!
The shortage of staff as with all service businesses currently was prevalent
Side dishes were good but main dishes were very salty...only had one bite..
Food average we had are appetizers quickly. The waiter took are order for dinner and coming back telling us they were backed up. 45 mins later we paid our bill and left
No light at table, dark, could not see food, dinner took almost 3 hours to complete due to slow services.
Portions are smaller, prices are higher, which is understandable.
Ran out of "famous souffle" before 6:00 pm.. not okay when it is the house specialty desert.
Staff was amazing as always!
Good took forever. Wasn’t that great. Sushi was subpar at best.
When we got there 15 minutes before our reservation, I looked to see there was plenty of seating on the patio. We went inside and the hostess said that, since we were early, we needed to come back closer to our reservation time... in 15 minutes?! I said there was plenty of seating, but she still asked us to come back in 15.
We sat at the outside bar for a Mai Tai. The bar area was filthy and the floor was wet and smelled like the back of a restaurant. Garbage cans in clear view - Dirty dishes stacked on a banquet table.
Strike two... we should have left at that point, but stayed. The waitress was great! Very courteous and polite.
I go check back for our table. We are seated and our new waitress is just as nice as the last. I will say that, besides the disinterested hostess, they have a GREAT staff. We order another round, lobster bisque, and apps. We get our drinks right away, but after 30 minutes, we still do not have our soup or apps. The waitress said they were having issues in the kitchen and apologized, then took our main order. 45 minutes and she's still checking back with us and apologizing. I felt for her, she was doing the best she could.
After ONE HOUR our soup shows up. Then the apps about 5 minutes later. All of it is barely warm.
I tell the waitress that we have a show to go to and to ask that the main course is sped up. About ten minutes later, the main course shows up. The poor waitress was stumbling all over herself apologizing. She was doing the best she could under the circumstances.
The food tasted good, but portions were very small. Overall, not a good value. Roy's has backslid quite a bit from the older days. At least this location.
Food was great, but they were a bit slow with service, probably because of understaffing in the kitchen.
Food was great. Server was amazing. Restaurant is moving as quickly as they can without compromise service and quality despite low staff
Be cautious when ordering the seafood tower. It was quite disappointing. Very small portion for this dish and the lobster was severely over cooked and inedible. The server was amazing and helped resolve the issue. I would stick with the canoe for two.
It was dark and the service was slow. The server was new and in training. The food was excellent!
Food and Mai tais were amazing. Great place to go, have a reservation.
The staff members were amazing and so kind regardless of them being short staffed. Food was really good and fresh and visually appealing. I would definitely go again. The salmon dish was amazing and light. Sushi was really tasty as well.
So disappointed in our experience on Saturday. Roy’s is one of my favorite restaurants but I guess there’s always that one chance it will go south. When we arrived for our outside reservation we where told they only had inside tables and offered a seat at the bar outside. So we choose to sit at the bar. We ordered our appetizer, food and a to go order all at the same time. The appetizer came, was good, had a drink too. Then we waited and waited. About 15 minutes later our to go order is delivered. Confused, I thought our food order was missed (two orders of sushi). We were assured it was not. Waited another 15-20 minutes. The sushi (that I order every time I go) was delivered. Not sure if it was a new chef or just rushing but it was missing the fish and was wrapped in seaweed which it never is. They offered to redo it but after waiting 40 minutes we passed. The bartender comped one order to go and didn’t charge for the returned order but I left hungry…
The food and service was great as always. The location and view was amazing. The only bad part is the excessive noise of dishes getting bussed and constantly hearing the loud crashing of plates. It ruins the mood and the atmosphere. There needs to be a new place for the staff to buss dishes to.
We ordered an appetizer and it came cold, half of my seabass cold as well, and my dessert burned. the flavor of food is really good But it came in the wrong temperature tho. The service is really good, nothing to complaint.
