Excellent meal for a hotel restaurant. My wife is gluten-free and the chef was very flexible to make modifications to accommodate a GF meal.
Food was bland. Not creative. No bread.
No value, just a name
Our experience was outstanding. The Mai Tai’s, the appetizer and entrees were excellent. We have missed Roy’s since the one near our home in Woodland Hills, Ca, closed.
Outside table at sunset was beautiful. Went to celebrate my birthday which they never acknowledged and the food was slow. One person in the party kept getting served last after everyone else for all 3 courses. But the prix fixe Mahalo Monday menu was a great value
My lobster bisque, lobster tail amd key lime tartlet were yummy. My husband’s fish was warm, the rest of his plate (rice and baby bok choy) were cold.
This was our first visit to Roy's and it did not disappoint. The food and service were exceptional. Our only complaint would involve the parking which was ridiculous. $32 reduced to $17 with Roy's validation.
The food was delicious! Fresh and flavorful!!
Service was amazing! Great atmosphere!
I’m sure with the pandemic, wait staff and others were doing all they can to provide fir a good experience but having to wait an hour for a wedge salad and 30 min between drink orders being filled was too much for a $245 bill. I hope they can rectify this in the future.
Food was amazing, bit it took forever to get it!
Made a reservation, not ready when we arrived. We went to outside bar to wait for our table. That was the end of it, no one ever came out to tell us our table was ready. We finally ordered at the bar. Food came out cold fish was rubbery. Not what I expected from Roy’s. We were disappointed. Best thing about the experience was our bar tender. She was personable and efficient.
Food and service were fantastic. Loved the outdoor seating and view. Not a big fan of the music but it was quiet and not distracting. Great night out. Highly recommend!
Always love it at Roy's SanDiego Waterfront. The ambience cannot be beat, right on the boardwalk with harbor view of beautiful yachts and sunsets to the west. Service is always friendly and the manager Sean is visible and keeping everything running smoothly.
So impressed with the staff and of course, the food. Great atmosphere.
Great menu and beautiful outdoor setting for happy hour on Thursdays!
Everything tasted great, but I wouldn’t order the curry I mean lobster bisque again.
This restaurant did not have Edamame beans for appetizers due to the covid. Our meal came out a little slow because they had 3 people ahead of us. if your not in a rush this restaurant would be a good relaxing place to be. The waitress was nice and kept checking back on us to see how the meal was.
Not what I’ve experienced at other locations. Disappointed in fact. I know that these are problematic times times but given the cost, the poor parking, and very slow service I cannot recommend this location. There are quite simply too many other better restaurants to choose from on the San Diego waterfront.
Understaffed. Very long wait for food. Service was good but servers and cooks could not keep up. I would not recommend this restaurant until they get staffing under control. Several tables were so frustrated they got up and left.
Hostesses and kitchen was disappointed. We couldnt get a welcoming greeting by the hostesses. We would never get help if I didnt ask for it. And another thing, we waited for the main course sooo long. I heart the next table was complaining about the same problem too. Unfortunately we didnt have a good experience in that dinner
We were going to have lunch here but decided to have drinks and only share one appetizer because the waitress said the chef wanted us to order everything at once and they will pace it how they want to. I don't like that. At all. It's my meal and I am paying. I want to order different courses when I am ready for them and don't like to be rushed. Won't be eating here again if that is their new standard.
We chose waterfront seating outdoors to take in the sea air, marvel at all the boats in the Marina and people-watch. Our server, Maggie, was great and cared that we had a good time and always returned to make sure everything was as we like it. I had the butterfish, which I've ordered every time (except when they have lobster tail specials). There's nothing in this world better tasting than Roy's butterfish, which we first tasted at Roy's in Kahana(?), Hawaii. Roy's waterfront is our go-to location for birthdays and anniversarys.
Our service from the hostess stand to our server were great, that would have us go back and try at least one more time! Our issues were that not one, not two, but 4 wines that we ordered weren't available. The wines we replaced my wives wine with was okay at best, no comparison to the others we were going to order. Our server comped it which we appreciated, but we never got a good wine and we weren't about to go from bottle to bottle. When our food arrived which was the butter-fish, it very well cooked, but both were room temp at best and the bokchoy was over cooked. It was very busy and we were happy they were, there was a concert happening at The Shell which we attended, so next time I will attempt to go when there is nothing going on to see if things are to the level we expected. The view and atmosphere are hard to beat and man are their restaurants w views in SD, so a small step and we'll be happy to write a great review.
The fish was cold and we were rushed by our waiter.
Food great, water great, prices a bit high but ok, time long ish wait, felt like they wanted us out of there but food took a while
Zack is the BEST, wonderful service, came to our table many times to check, was very prompt, funny, sociable, caring and very respectful.
Offered us options, told us about the food, drinks overall an excellent service.
Roy’s has long been a restaurant that I look forward to dining at - about once a year. This time, we stayed at the Marriott Marquis which the restaurant is attached to and were dining in celebration of our 3rd anniversary.
We had made a reservation for 9:00 pm. It was a little awkward being greeted and eventually led to our table but no major problems or concerns being seated. We were sat at a table on the patio, facing the water. The table was sticky and wobbly. There was a battery powered “candle” on the table. Music from the bar was playing loudly. We loved the noise and the energy but it all seemed less than well maintained.
We ordered 2 dirty martinis, up. At the time we ordered, we asked if the bar had blue cheese olives and the server said they did. The martinis took about as long as the meal to arrive at the table. When they finally did arrive, they weren’t “dirty,” they olives did not have blue cheese (which the server acknowledged), and they weren’t made well.
The food was okay. The short rib dish (they have had on the menu for years) was delicious, as always. It was served with an IKEA knife. Which, I’m not sure if that is a fair negative but it felt weird. We also ordered a macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi dish which was not memorable, to say the least.
There was a fireworks display while we dined. That was nice. I am fairly certain Roy’s shouldn’t get the credit for that though.
Overall very good food, just a long wait to get your food.
Always enjoy Roy's, drinks a little off this time with mix and chefs special cheesecake was about Bite-sized. First time with some dissatisfaction in 3 years of going for a sunset dinner but will most definitely return
The food was well prepared but was not served warm/hot. The Caesar salad was fair; the fish was fresh and tasty. The accompanying vegetables were cold and disappointing. The portion size was adequate.
The window view seats provided a great view. If you’re in the city or staying at The Marriott, Roy’s provides a good dining option. We drove into the city to use a gift certificate we had been given and to celebrate our anniversary. Parking was difficult and expensive. The signs in the hotel were insufficient and we ended up walking around the whole pool complex to get to the restaurant. At our age, that was frustrating.
The restaurant was very crowded with a line out the door waiting for tables and causing congestion. The only ones wearing masks were the serving staff. No one in the congested pool area was masked. The tables in Roy’s are not six feet apart in every area.
Great location with beautiful view. Food was way overpriced, smaller portions and mediocre tasting.
Roy’s is the place where you cures your Hawaiian Nostalgia, it’s like being in Hawaii without jumping on the airplane. The food, drinks and overall atmosphere is just PERFECT!
Special Mahalo to Ms. Holiday for her services at the table!
so...we have gone to Roys in La Jolla for almost 20 years, for special dates like this one (birthdays, annevisaries, etc...) and the occasional happy hour. When that site turned to the Roy Yamaguchi brand, it got even better and I say that because I am not sure if the rest of the chain locations turned downward.
That can certainly be said of the location downtown. We were so surprised and happy to learn that one existed because the La Jolla location closed due to the pandemic (and the fact that the trolly station was being built and there are plans to raze that whole block).
Downtown the noise was a bit much, very outdoor style bar atmosphere. The staff was clearly short and that itself was not necessarily the issue. The problem was the food. The appetizer we got for the poke was awful; it was basically a full onion with a few pieces of fish. The avocado was non-existent. It was so bad in fact that when the waitress came to check on us, she stopped herself and said "oh my, what is that". It was returned and she brought another that was acceptable. I thought the misery was over. Then came the dishes. The noodles were covered in red bell peppers, which were not on the menu. The shrimp was dry and basically inedible. Then, the braised short ribs were rough and not at all falling apart as they should; to make matters worse, there was pico de Gallo on it?! Are you kidding? I can go on but I think you get the point.
In short, Roys will continue to be considered a casualty of the pandemic for us. So sad.
Have been going to Roy's for years. Wonderful location, could not ask for better service. The sea bass was excellent. We all (3) order it. Unfortunately one of us got sick. He is the one with the cast iron stomach. Maybe just a coincidence.
Very helpful staff, who managed to get us a great table even though we were half an hour early. Excellent menu, all brilliantly created.
The staff as attentive. The service was good. Food came quickly. The patio was fantastic. Great view. The staff wore masks and did ]their best to protect the public.
Everything was great, we celebrated a birthday and will do it again.
