Founding Farmers - DC
Great food...great menu. Something for everyone
It is loud and busy, but super yummy. Get the Mac n cheese!
Went for my Cousins birthday. It is ALWAYS busy here, so please make a reservation as if your life depended on it. Everything was delicious and the never disappoint. I got the chicken and waffles, which are to die, so highly recommended. Besides that, you should keep going here to try everything on their menu, it’ll always be with it. Service was just as worthwhile, btw
I love this place but the disconnect between the bar and getting drinks upstairs is quite annoying. It took my brother 45 minutes to get a Bloody Mary while my wife and I had two orders of Mimosas. There needs to be a drink runner for upstairs. Also, my brother had long hairs in his eggs but the restaurant took that off the bill and understandable.
Great service, great food! Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait 30 minutes to get seated. This seemed to be the case with everyone else as well. If anyone plans to visit, be prepared to wait.
Only one bad thing about this place is the wait to get a table, even with a reservation. It’s 25 minutes beyond the reservation time to get a table.
the water was warm . the waitress barely came around . we had to ask multiple people for silver ware & it was weirdly crowded . My boyfriend & I are young people so many waiters don’t treat us with respect with the assumption that we wont tip well . but we would have tipped big if our service was big . Do better & you would have gotten a $50
Fresh, delicious, plentiful food. Service was a tiny bit slow but probably due to the popularity and large crowd when we were there. It was definitely not enough of a problem to hurt our experience. We will definitely visit again when in DC
Thankfully I made a reservation ahead of time! Even though I came after the big brunch rush, it was still pretty packed and there was a nice wait time. It only took a few minutes to be seated and orders were taken soon after. Our waitress was a delight! The food choices - chicken and waffles and the spicy chicken sandwich - were okay, but were plated very nicely. I’ll definitely be back again, just with different entrees and maybe trying the brunch!
We were seated an HOUR after our reservation. They were not honest with their time estimates, and continually claimed we would be seated shortly... Once seated, I told the server about our experience and her response was "oh, yeah that's just the way it is here on weekends" with a shrug. What?? How is that an appropriate response? Why even take reservations then? VERY unimpressed with the overall experience here.
The food was incredible! Highly recommend going for brunch, my roommates and I really enjoyed it! Be prepared for a wait, even if you have a reservation. We waited almost 30 minutes to be seated even with a reservation but the food was worth the wait!
We went for brunch for my son’s birthday and really loved it. The beignet’s were delicious and came with three dipping sauces. The menu is great and it was hard to choose. Chicken and waffles and egg scrambles were fantastic. The wait was long and crowded in the entry even with a reservation but once seated the table was very comfortable. Our server was just the worst we have had in a long time. She brought the coffee without the cream. We asked her multiple times and she never brought it. Ultimately, we flagged down another server. Same with the toast. She didn’t bring the butter and jam until 10 minutes after the food arrived. Other than the extremely poor server, we had a wonderful meal and can’t wait to go back.
Disappointed in constant wait times every time I come to visit, despite having a reservation. Today we showed up 5 minutes early and weren’t seated until 30 minutes after our reservation time.
Other than the ridiculous wait times, the food and service was amazing as always.
Make reservation!! Don’t go without one! Food is great ! Made from scratch ! Nothing over $15.00. Brunch menu
We waited nearly 40 minutes past our reservation to be seated. The place was overflowing with people and there were few places to wait that were still within earshot of the host announcements. Service was slow and inconsistent. We won’t be returning to Founding Farmers.
We had a reservation at 10am, we were sat 20mins later. No where to stand while waiting. Food was average, nothing special.
Music a bit loud and “Energetic “ for dining. Was not background at all. Service friendly. Food delivered timely. Was good. Nothing special. But enjoyed the meal.
The food took way too long to come and the flavour was very bland. The service was a little slow and it just wasn’t smooth at all. The whole experience just wasn’t good.
Delicious food and great service. Very reasonably priced.
Wait staff wasn’t particularly friendly. Seemed more interested in “turning the table” then creating a great dining experience. I’m pretty sure he never said hello and seemed interested in providing the minimum service possible.
Restaurant just wanted us out as quick as possible as there were a lot of people waiting. We only had the menu for all of 60 seconds before they wanted us to order. We ordered wine, starter and a main courses. They forgot our starter and brought us our main courses!!! We didn’t bother arguing just asked for starter to be taken off bill. Food was OK but I had “Meatloaf with Gravy” and it didn’t come with any gravy, in less than 30 mins we had from arriving to finishing our main course. Obviously the kitchen was slammed but there is no excuse for such a poor experience, definitely won’t be going again.
Founding Farmers was FANTASTIC!! Best Chicken Fried Steak I have every eaten, & I was born, raised, & currently like in West TX so I know CFS. If you can ask for Mike, great service!!
I guess it all depends on the night. We brought friends there for their first time. We were seated and greeted by 1 waitress. Ordered our drinks. 15 minutes later we were greeted by another waitress, no drinks yet and asked if we were ready to order drinks. 3 CANS of soda came out another 15 minutes after that. 1 glass of wine took 25 minutes and had to remind the waitress twice. Grilled cheese was cooked using mayonnaise so of course my daughter didn't eat that. Pasta was al dente.. shrimp were spicy and as I shared the dish, my friend wasn't thrilled either. The best part of the meal was dessert. Quite pricey for it not being all that great. Will not be coming back next time in DC.
I went there for dinner, service is great. I have a bad experience. I found a metal in my meal, while I was chewing my food I felt it in my mount. I let know the server and they were friendly.
Incredible food with a farm-to-table focus. Craft cocktails were delish! Service impeccable!
Surprisingly mediocre in comparison to previous breakfasts we’ve had there. Sticky table and dirty silverware when we were seated. Indifferent service. As a server placed a plate in front of my wife that was hanging off the table because there wasn’t enough room, she asked “is there anything else I can get for you”.
Hi Earl: Thank you for sharing your review with us. I am super sorry for the mediocre experience you had this time. :( Our Management Team has read your feedback and will follow up with our staff that worked during the morning hours of Friday, August 16th, as well as make sure our table tops & silverware are perfectly detailed. With this acknowledged, we do hope to have you and your wife back for another try soon! Please call us at 202-822-8783 for any reservation help needed. -Amy
Excellent value for money! Very good and abundant dishes. I will definitely come back when I’m back in town. Although the restaurant is often almost full, the waiting time is really low.
Loved the menu and the food was great. Had reservations and had to wait for about 10 minutes, but on a busy night, that is understandable. Quite noisy with tables close together. Service was friendly and efficient. Have had better experiences in the daytime when less busy and less noisy.
I was a little disappointed that Founding Farmers didn't live up to the hype. I ordered Fish and Chips and it was served with a side of literal potato chips (i.e. not french fries as the dish was meant to be served). The server was nice about the mix-up and brought us an order of french fries later. To be honest, I was underwhelmed. It's not often you pay over 20$ for a dish and it is served with no garnish or sides to speak of (in my experience fish and chips should come with cole slaw, or at least a pickle, no?). The atmosphere was pleasant, but a bit loud for my tastes. All in all, I think we over paid for a perfectly average meal.
Our flavorful meals were brought by a very considerate server who had to tell to be heard over the din.
One of my favorite go to restaurants in DC. Always a must do! Great food, staff!
Hi Cupcake: We are thrilled to be one of your favorite restaurants in DC! Thank you so much and we look forward to having you back soon. -Amy
This was my second visit to Founding Farmers at this location. First, they would seat me until my dinner companion arrived (despite scads of empty tables). So, I headed to the bar and ordered a drink while waiting. The bar tender refused to substitute lime for lemon in my Cumber delight drink. Then when the drink garnishes fell into the bottom of the glass, the barkeep put his fingers INTO my drink to fish them out until I told him to cut it out. Due to mobility issues I had requested a downstairs table, the host said we have an elevator. Great, but that wasn't what I asked. When we were finally seated, the hostess took walked a 3/4 circuit around the dining room to get us to the table. Our waiter was friendly, spot on with his recommendations and attentive without being too intrusive. The mussels for a starter were really delicious & cooked perfectly. My shrimp dinner was a disappointment - shrimp coating was bland & think, the fries were cold and greasy, and the cornbread was more like a corn pudding. My companion's scallops & risotto was cooked as requested & quite yummy. The noise level is VERY LOUD making conversation at a normal volume impossible. My first visit was a grand slam start to finish, this visit will make me think twice before making a return trip.
The service was extremely slow.
We made reservations for DC Restaurant Week only to learn that it was only in their other locations! The food was barely passable -- soggy fries and more bread than filling in the sandwiches.
Our group did not appreciate having to wait until the last person arrived (unavoidably delayed by Metro). We had to stand in the entry on a busy lunch day, including one member of party who uses a cane. Meanwhile our table sat empty. We could have been out of the way of arriving diners, and more importantly having (i.e., spending money on) drinks and maybe apps while waiting. Food was pretty good, fresh. Fries that come with sandwiches (not identified as a complimentary side on the menu) were oddly bland. Our waiter did accommodate the group by offering separate checks (we would never ask for them, knowing how this can be a nuisance for servers). So, some good, some not so good. FF, please be less rigid about your seating policy.
The cost has gone way up at FF, just not worth it anymore. I will not make it my preferred place anymore. I paid $18 for a garden salad. It was just ridiculous.
I have been to FF a bunch of times. Each time the food and service have great.
Uninspired. It's really lost its "mojo." No longer tastes particularly fresh and doesn't feel local or even all that farm-to-table, as it used to. Service rushed, bored, and again, uninspired.
Hi John: Gosh, I am very sorry that your recent visit on August 13th failed to measure up, and nothing gave you that WOW factor that once did. :/ We appreciate you letting us know your takeaway from your time with us, and do hope that you'll give us another try soon! Please call us at 202-822-8783 for any reservation help needed. -Amy
Was in Washington, DC for business and found this restaurant on Open Table. My flight arrived later than scheduled, and the restaurant happily changed the reservation. Restaurant was packed at 7:30pm, clientele was varied - business & families. Menu was varied (hamburgers & hot dogs to entrees). I had Beer Can Chicken, which was half a roasted chicken served with sautéed greens. I substituted watermelon salad for the pickled potato salad. My dining partner enjoyed the meatloaf. Will definitely go back the next time in DC.
