Herb & Wood
Great brunch spot with innovative takes on classics and exceptional service.
First we waited quite long for a table then they tried to give us table for two and it was three of us. The word she used was to “squeeze us in”.Then three different people came and asked what water we want. There was no communication between the staff. Whatever we order in terms of food looked really good but tasted really bad. Nothing seemed to go together. Overall below average place.
Some of the best food I’ve had in California in a fun and contemporary atmosphere. Herb and Wood is a destination restaurant.
We love Herb the ambience is terrific; the food and drink over the top, in our opinion. We were celebrating August birthdays and the evening began with a bourbon spouse had the grilled venison loin. Vanilla crepe torte with pistachio gelato for dessert. We brought our own champagne. Their brunch is also amazing. A great place to celebrate any occasion.
We did the Chef’s special which sounded great. However we were not told that it had curry sauce and one of us don’t eat anything with curry. The waitress tried to make up for this by comping an appetizer dish / it worked out but it would be helpful to know all the main ingredients in advance. Our choices would have been different had we known
Fun, great service and food!
Can’t decide which course/dish I loved more: chicken liver toast was AMAZING; Bluefin Tuna superb; the pork so rich and succulent. Escarole salad was a little salty for me. Bartender subbed mezcal in a beautiful tart drink. A great table in the back corner by the kitchen window. Loved it!
So, the place is very nice. The service is not bad. The food is delicious even if it’s a bit overpriced. Recommended for having some good experience especially when you are not a local and came here for vacation.
Great ambience and service with food not at the level of the price you pay for it. Go only for drinks otherwise don’t waste your money and time here
Everything was really good… Except both the waiter and bus boy kept saying "is that all you're having" Or for example are you having "just" that.
Absolutely a great time! Took friend for her birthday and she loved it, everything we ordered was a winner and waiter was awesome!
If i can give 10 stars I would! My new favorite spot in San Diego. Great location, great ambiance, the bar is one of the larger bars i've seen in a comparable restaurant, cocktails are awesome, food is even better and service is top notch! Will make Herb & Wood a must stop every time I'm in town! The open air patio seating felt so good, especially in a warm and balmy summer day in San Diego!
We will come back.
We love this place for a special date night, amazing food!
We loved everything, the burrata was amazing ! Scallops , venison ! People next to us were so intrigued with what we were eating !
The desserts were all good.
Excellent!! Staff was so nice. Loved that we got to have drinks at the bar and sit for a bit before getting seated. We had like 5 minutes before our reservation but the hostess told us to enjoy our drinks before rushing to our table. LOVED THAT. They really treated us well and were very friendly. Food was outstanding. The steak special recommended for at least 3 people was so delicious. I will be dreaming of that steak for weeks. Wine pairing was great. Ambiance was perfect, the lighting of the restaurant at 6:30 was awesome!! We will be back for sure!
Absolutely our favorite date night dinner spot!!!!!!!
Octopus was outstanding! The biscuits are always excellent! Everything we ate from appetizer to dessert was delicious!
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Highly recommend!
Herb we suggest trying and splitting several small plates rather than simply ordering an appetizer and entrée. Dessert was off the charts, and we were so pleased that Brian malarkey came by our table. We felt like VIPs all night, and look forward to our next visit!
The food is always phenomenal and the atmosphere is perfect. Amelia was outstanding.
There was a fire in the kitchen and we couldn’t order any dishes. They told us that they will contact us after.
Food was incredible and service was excellent.
Kendall was our server, she was great, food was excellent. Drinks were great too.
I've already recommended Herb & Wood to a friend. I had a late dinner with the woman I am dating now and the real purpose was to celebrate what would have been my 28th anniversary with my late wife. It might sound weird but it's just something we do. Once your spouse dies your perspective on these things changes. My wife died a little less than two years ago, her husband died about 16 months ago. We just respect the history that we all had together. When asked on OpenTable the reason for the dinner it only seemed appropriate to say anniversary. I wasn't stating it to score a free glass of champagne. For the record.
Anyway, wonderful meal and ambience, great attentive service. We had a wonderful meal and great time and it let us relax after spending the day in La Jolla. Highly recommend Herb & Wood to any couple looking for a quiet, romantic dining location.
Always a great dining experience!
Herb & Wood was delicious! We celebrated my birthday with 8 friends and everything was outstanding.
Venison, scallops, and the gnocchi were three of our favorite dishes and the desserts were amazing!
Thanks to Nik, the manager who gave us top-notch service and also Mr. Malarkey for stopping by the table to see how our experience was going..... We will definitely be back!
The restaurant is attractive - rather noisy near the bar/air-conditioned area - more quiet on the back patio. Food is good but the prices are rather high. Wine list - one of the higher priced wine lists I have seen recently - chardonnays begin at about $60 and a cabernet sauvignon a bit higher - French wines even higher.
Unsure if I will return.
Incredible, engaging experience. It’s all about the food, all about the customer. We waited at the bar for a few minutes to our table and that’s where the experience started. The bartender was a passionate artist and took pride in showing us how he crafted unique libations with beets and lemon vernbena as well as turmeric and honey and chili oil. Delicious. Then at the table, our incredible waiter engaged but didn’t intrude. His questions to us lead to perfect recommendations. Service was very prompt, yet we weren’t rushed at all. Ambiance on the patio is very relaxed and comfortable. We had a great time and would highly recommend Herb and Wood as much for the quiet, intimate dining as the service and food.
Food and service was amazing. This was my second visit and my guests thought it was one of the best restaurants they've been to
Fantastic dishes, great waiter
We moved from the main dining room onto the patio hoping it would be less noisy
It was not it felt like a noisy bar
The food was good yet over seasoned and very salty
Prices were high and service was a madhouse
We will not go back
Amazing food and service!
Everything was delicious! One of the best meals I have had in a very long time. It is also a really cool space and the ambiance was wonderful. Our server, Jared, was outstanding! He easily shared his knowledge of the menu along with the area since we were on vacation. I look forward to eating there again in the future!
Had a reservation, so we walked in an were directly seated. We sat next to the window that looked into the kitchen. It was fun to watch the chefs at work. The venue was an open and light, with lots of windows and sky lights. The wait staff was attentive but not overbearing. Started with the Beet and Verbena from the bar. Great recommendation from our waiter. She was right on target. It was smooth, not too sweet and pretty. Then we shared the Red Gem Lettuce salad. Tasty, light and enough for 3 people to share as a starter. For the entree I had the Mushroom & Truffle-Studded Goat Cheese Pizza. It was enough for 2 people, so I took half home (much to the delight of my son.) It was amazing. My friends got the Bucatini and the Roasted Baja Shrimp. The Bucatini was clearly fresh pasta and looked amazing. The Baja Shrimp were huge and also looked great. Both my friends raved about their dishes. We finished by sharing a choice of 3 gelatos with a brownie. We had the vanilla, chocolate and mint chip. All were amazing. The noise level was a bit loud. I found myself struggling to hear our conversation at times. It is pricey, so consider this a splurge night. It is well worth it though.
The location is very nice. The food was very well seasoned and balanced. Bone marrow app and scallops main were excellent. Drinks were so so. It took a second try to make a proper dirty martini. Service was subpar for this caliber of a restaurant... especially with the 'sidedish' of attitude. Cucina Urbana and Trust have much better service.
Good food, service great.
There are very few "fine dining" type establishments that ALSO have a deep and broad menu. Herb & Wood does. You get the upscale decor, star chef created food, attentive service AND a range of choices. Win. This is San Diego's best.
What we always love -- ordering a bevy of smaller plates and one entree to share. Here's an example:
3 diners: Start: 3 seafood based small plates (Chef Brian's Hamachi is always the BEST). Then 2 salads. The salads are generous with the greens, but there aren't many toppings. We prefer dressing on side. Dressings are not standout. I'd also suggest ordering a warm vegetable along with salad...better pairing. And they have wonderful vegetable options. We had summer squash. We also ended up ordering the 4th small plate seafood option (shrimp -- very good).
We also ordered an entree. We had the swordfish based on the description. It was bright in flavor, not too rich. Fennel was a topping. So tender. We are not even big swordfish eaters, but it was divine.
We have been to Herb & Wood 6 times. Always tops. It IS the best fine dining in San Diego. No doubt. The other "names" pretty much don't come close. A few do... On other occasions we've enjoyed beef tartare. In fact, we'd say it was the best we've ever had. The ONLY critique is that for those who like their food very clean, sometimes there is too much in the way of "sauce." Just tell your server.
Go here. Order a lot. Enjoy.
Lovely dinner with excellent service from our waiter Jamie. He even overheard us say it was a birthday and brought out a special dessert. Herb and Wood is always the best!
