Urban Gleaners Second Annual Summer Supper is a unique walk-around tasting event that celebrates our local food system, showcases the versatility of upcycled food, and directly benefits our mission of reducing food waste and food insecurity in our community.

This event is an opportunity to indulge in the culinary creations of 14 of Portland’s most beloved chefs. Chefs will be preparing small plates from gleaned and upcycled ingredients, showcasing what the potentials and possibilities are with food that is considered “waste.” Joining our chefs will be various local beer, wine, cocktail and non-alcoholic vendors.

Summer Supper is not only an opportunity to experience some great food, but also a chance to support a noble cause and to learn and raise awareness about food waste and sustainability in our community. We will have different booths with our local non-profit partners and local farms we glean, with various activities focused around food sustainability.

Everyone started running out of food and drinks too early. Little too spendy for what you get. Lines did move smoothly. Not enough places to sit.

While I liked most of the food, and felt a lot of the collabs were well done, I do think this lent heavy towards spiced dishes that often overpowered a majority of the ingredients. Not bad, but a bit of a let down, especially when a few of the restaurants participating have such good reputations. The venue however, left a LOT to be desired. It was in no way shape or form welcoming to anyone with any sort of mobility issues. ADA is more or less a joke. Half of the event was outside and to get in an out of the building in general, you had to take a few steps, steps that were very steep. Anyone in a wheelchair had to, from my perspective, leave the entire building, go outside then around, to go between the indoor and outdoor areas. This is really cumbersome not to mention unwelcoming, and in some ways unsafe to those who might have to do so. It also was compounded and made worse in that the ONLY water station was inside as were the only restrooms. Indoors, there were no seating options save for a small location that could seat 4-6 at max. I also felt like a few of the vendors were just flatly not wanting to be there. They acted annoyed if you did not show interest in their products, or, that you did not buy anything. There was a distinct lack of a cohesive theme to a lot of the dishes and the event itself outside of it being vegan. While part of the tickets and such went to non-profits, there was no real emphasis or representation of such there outside of 1 sign and a few flyers by the water station. For the cost of the ticket the quality of food and the sheer amount of food is justified, but everything I found was sorely lacking, which was highly disappointing as I've been to other vegan events with a much better atmosphere and experience.
