Hard to find beef wellington in San Diego. What a treat.
This was one of the best restaurant experience I have had in my life. Chef Luciano made the night very special. The food was absolutely amazing. I am a food lover who appreciates the science behind cooking and this menu is so smart and refined. Our server was so kind, attentive, and sweet. Chef Luciano greeted us at the table to make sure that we were welcomed, that we were satisfied with our experience, and to answer any questions. As we were finishing desert, Chef Luciano came back to our table and asked if we had plans after dinner. We explained that it was our anniversary and we were just talking about what we were going to do after dinner. He offered to take us to the venue next door where there was live music. He walked us in and found us a table. Very classy. The musician was fantastic! He played a classical guitar and covered a variety of top 20 hits. It was so good. Something I just realized, the food is some of the best I have ever had, yet I have barley mentioned it. That is when you know that this truly is a special place.
We loved everything about The Red Door. The arugula salad was freshly picked, the brie appetizer surprisingly creative, the sauces and seasonings clearly by someone who knew what they were doing. Our enthusiastic waiter was helpful and always right at hand. Simple clean decor and great atmosphere for our quiet and delicious lunch after the art museum. Chocolate-encased spumoni! Nice wine list. We’ll be back.
Chef & owner Luciano greeted us the door. We were joyfully welcomed by our hostess & server. We ordered saffron risotto with the grilled Scallops entree’, which was layered in savory, elegant flavors that danced & delighted in our mouths. As a Italian traditionalist, I couldn’t help but follow the meal with the creamy tiramisu. The ambiance was simply divine & reminded me of being in my grandmother’s cozy dining room with all the delights of conversation , aroma & good food. Chef Luciano welcomes his diners & visits every table to make sure the meal & experience are perfection. Spectacular!!
Dinner was exceptional from service, cocktails, appetizer, dinner to dessert. Presentations were beautiful and ingredients and seasonings were exceptionally fresh and flavorful. The sausage flatbread was so good and just right for 3 of us to share. Then the scallops were superb along with perfectly sauteed vegetables and addictive fried kale. Sea bass was the catch of the day and the sauce so delicious. Finally the banana cream pie and tiramisu were decadent and yummy. Luciano, the owner/chef visited the tables 3 times to ensure that everyone's selections were being enjoyed. No wonder this restaurant consistently receives rave reviews. Definitely on my repeat visit list.
Great meal and service was excellent, it was alittle loud inside
We were very satisfied with our evening at the Red Door.
Chef was great, walked around and introduced himself.
Great food and service! Will be back here again in the near future.
As always - food is outstanding (swordfish special was amazing), and there is always a special wine hiding in the collection. Truly our favorite restaurant in SD!
It is just so good there.
This is a neighborhood restaurant with great food. Service is low key and friendly. we were there on a weekday night and it wasn't crowded. The food is locally sourced and very fresh. We shared the Brussels and bacon to start. Highly recommend! following that we had the Arugula salad.Very fresh and the cashew dressing was different but very good.
I ordered the Beef Wellington. it was just the right size and absolutely recommend. My wife had the scallops and I believe there were 4 huge ones. My wife often orders scallops and she really liked these. Dessert: we shared the Lava cake with ice cream. A good choice if I do say so myself. Decaf cap was solid. I would like to say we will be back soon and we would but we live in NJ.
We love The Red Door. It has been and will continue to be one of our favorite spots in Mission Hills. During the pandemic we have tired our very best to keep them going. We love chef Luciano. He is the best and we will do whatever it takes to keep his restaurant going in our neighborhood!
Its a great neighborhood dining spot and its great that they have reopened to good business, sometimes jard to get a table but that will get better. Owner is a class act, he cooked and delivered meals during the pandemic to first responders!
My son birthday
We love this place and try to eat there every time we are in San Diego!
The food was plentiful and very tasteful. The waiter , chef , and staff were very inviting. Definitely a must go to place for Italian food. Don’t miss out with on amazing cuisine.
Fantastic dining experience from the moment we walked in. Can’t wait to return!!
I love this place! My boyfriend and I have been here about 4 or 5 times now and this place is nothing short of amazing every time. We usually get the beef Wellington (which is to die for) and another entre every time we come, but since this last time was our 4th/5th trip, we decided we would have their specials instead. I'm glad I let my bf pick since we ended up with a bed of this amazing risotto topped with seared Ahi that was out of this world and the best veal tortellini in a creamy mushroom sauce (I think, but whatever it was, I could bathe in it). We told our friends to order the beef wellington and he was so impressed (which we knew he would be). Our server was Ryan and set the tone for the night and our experience even more enjoyable. He knew everything about the cocktails we were asking about and described the food in a way that you couldn't wait to try it. Loved everything and will be coming back, especially for on a Saturday so that we can have another fun experience with Ryan!
Absolutely delicious meal. The lasagna, lobster ravioli and farm to fork were all equally tasty and wonderful. We had not been by for a while and we’re pleasantly surprised by how much the food has changed and all in a good way. The food before was fine but it is stellar now.
The service was outstanding and the outdoor space was delightful.
Very busy but the food was well worth it. Specials are to die for
Absolutely amazing food and the service was top notch. The chef/owner came to say hi to us and check in. Would definitely recommend and return!
Great food and service! The scallops were so tender and delicious, and a great size too!
The Red Door is always outstanding! Best food and service! Chef Luciano is wonderful!
Food always fabulous and Ryan, our server, went beyond. A completely lovely evening!
It was our first time dining here and overall it was nice. The ravioli was tasty and my girlfriend really liked the eggplant parmesan. The inside dinning area has a romantic vibe with dim lighting. Anticipate the plates to be 25-48$. Enjoy!
The wait for service was rough but the servers were very nice. Good food.
We are never disappointed having a meal at The Red Door. Great food and drinks and always great service.
i ordered clams and pasta, the ink pasta had no flavor they just mixed in black dye the “sauce “ was bland i had at least 3 clams that didn’t open it would have been better to not have put them on my plate.. she had lasagna and that was disappointing as well.. the meat was mushy as if it was boiled then put in the sauce .. their sauce was bland and had little flavor also disappointing.. the bar drinks however were amazing so kudos to the bar staff who made well balanced drinks for the two of us..
Everything was outstanding! Food was amazing, service was great, ambiance was comfortable. We met Chef too as he came out to check on our meal. We’re definitely going back!
Pleasant Waite staff
Enjoyed the boutique restaurant/environment
As always, we really enjoyed our evening at the Red Door. The Brie appetizer, however, was much "soupier" than we expected. The Beef Wellington, however, was excellent. We are regular customers and absolutely love the food and ambience at The Red Door.
The place is great. The chef visits every table and talks with guests. The food is top quality and the service was superior. The flavor profile for everything we had was spot on.
We came here to celebrate our daughter’s college graduation. Everything start to finish was exceptional, a great find in San Diego
The arugula salad and lasagna were outstanding! The house Pinot Noir was most satisfactory! My companion had the chicken with mushrooms and the chicken was tough and the flavor not compelling. That was a surprise because our usual dining experience is just first-rate, so we'll just say that for some reason "The chicken didn't work" that night, but we'll be back.
The lobster ravioli....We couldn’t taste the lobster in it. Salads very good! The clams were fabulous. Service a bit slow but I understand there are Covid restrictions.
The service, drinks, and salads were good -- a little too salty. Our pasta dishes were extremely salty. The pasta was over done. We prefer our pasta al dente.
Overall we loved the place. The interior was elegant and comfortable. The outside seating was heated and covered. The service was quick and attention was well kept. The food was solid. Not absolutely spectacular. BUT very good. Also, the drink selection was fantastic. Loved both of my cocktails!
The food was incredible.
Food that lets ingredients shine, prepared to highlight the seasons, with care and thoughtfulness.
Service that is attentive, they work as a true team, making for a wonderful experience. Truly like being home Sunday dinner
