The Omakase Room at Sushi-san

We were so excited to celebrate my husband’s birthday at SHŌ because I had seen so many Instagram posts hyping up this new spot in Old Town 🎂✨ and honestly, that’s why this review feels even more disappointing to share. The ambience, music, and service were all beautiful, and it really does feel like a special place for a celebration 🤍 But food-wise, we were shockingly underwhelmed. We’ve tried many omakase experiences in Chicago and around the world, so we were really looking forward to this one. The first course was the only one we truly liked. After that, we felt like the sauces were way too strong and kept overpowering the fish instead of letting it shine. The flavors just didn’t feel balanced, and course after course, we kept waiting for it to get better. It also felt way too expensive for the amount of food. To be honest, it almost felt like we had just finished appetizers and they were already bringing out dessert. For a birthday omakase, we expected to leave feeling impressed and satisfied, but instead we left disappointed and still thinking about the value. And because we’ve had so many omakase meals before, it made the difference even more obvious. For example, @theomakaseroom Room by @therealsushisan in River North felt like much better value to us, and the flavors there were far more elegant and balanced in a way that really brought out the best in the sushi 🍣✨ We also went to their parent restaurant, @kamehachisushi , right next door the very next day, and it was amazing as always. That meal honestly reminded us why we love Kamehachi so much. So for us, SHŌ just didn’t live up to the hype. If you’ve been curious about this one, my honest take is that it’s a beautiful space, but for flavor and value, it just was not worth it for us.
