The Leathes Head is the first 2 AA Rosette Awarded Restaurant in the Borrowdale Valley.
We are truly passionate about our food at the Leathes Head, where dining is always a special occasion

Our menu is brimming with fine dining options, some classic with a modern twist, all as full of imagination as they are of flavour.

Head chef Noel Breaks treats guests to a menu of locally grown, reared and foraged produce, including Herdwick Lamb from Yew Tree Farm in Rosthwaite, milk and free range eggs from Scales Farm, and fresh produce from other Cumbrian producers; fresh meat from Lakeland Supplies in Kendal and cheese from The Kendal Cheese Company. We hope you can come and enjoy the Dining experience and take away something very special from your visit. Booked this overnight stay for our anniversary. From our stay to excellent food, everything went really well. Loved the food.

On the whole good food.Good service although sent port back because it had a caustic taste and they said they had changed it for a more expensive one but they just brought the same glass back so it was left. Tinny music was to loud and decor all a bit bland and unattractive

Hi Micheal, Sorry about the port but you should of tried the replacement as we had changed it for a Warre's 1980 vintage as a little treat following the standard port you ordered that was corked. We would never give you back something you were not happy with but we do have matching glasses. Regards The Leathes Head

The food was exceptionally good, well presented and excellent flavour. A few potatoes with the meal would have been appreciated. The waitress needs to have greater knowledge of the menu. Rather than saying the dessert is nice, when asked what it comprised of. In an empty restaurant it’s not necessary to put customers on neighbouring tables, the room isn’t that big and it spoilt the feeling of intimacy.

Friendly service is an important part of going to a restaurant. I find I enjoy a meal when I’m relaxed. This was not my experience at Leathes Head. Perhaps, in retrospect it was not surprising to find that we were the only diners in the section of the restaurant open to the public which was odd since when we added 2 people to the reservation we were told to arrive 15 minutes earlier only to be informed upon arrival that our table was not ready. A slightly awkward moment ensued before being ushered into the bar where the service could only be described as hostile verging on belligerent. Perhaps, it would be better to limit access to the restaurant to those staying at the hotel which would allow the staff to devote their entire attention to fawning over their every need which appears to include a completely irrational and unfounded desire to feel superior. At least I found this part of the dining experience at Leathes Head to be amusing. Subsequently, it came to my attention that there is a dress code. If that is the case then I suggest that we should have been turned away at the door since I gave up wearing ties long ago and in my experience no matter how they are worn they do not appear to enhance the dishes coming from the kitchen and it could well be argued that sporting such attire produces the opposite effect. Besides, information regarding dress codes should be made available through this booking service. I don’t have time to search for it.

Starter very nice. Main course was dry and uninspiring with hardly any sauce, no veg except roast new potatoes. Pudding was tasty but very small.

Excellent food and service. The staff made sure we had everything we needed and were very knowledgeable about the food and wine. I would recommend the wine paring experience.

Pretty average or below average food, especially for the price. Starters were bland, fish was tough and pudding was dry. Service, however, was excellent.
