Not a fan of waitressless ordering or use of the phone to order . Especially for the cost you are paying for such a limited menu .
The food was amazing but not a big fan of having to order everything ourselves and make sure we timed it correctly. Was hoping to be a little more pampered. Understand COVID has changed a few things
no servers yet have to pay 20% tip? Ridiculous. I use to dine here 2-3 times a week. I now come once every 3-4 months.
Pressed the call button at the table for server attention but was an extended time to answer. Water refill and clearing away plates required calls.
The ordering process is tedious and trying. Diners must enter a mobile phone number, full credit card details, and an email address in order to place an order on the digital system, even if one is paying by cash, as we were. The menu is only available online on one's phone, or on an Ipad which the restaurant loans to the diner. There are no paper menus. Both diners in this case have trouble reading small print, so using the system required assistance from two different servers. In addition, diners must be willing to pay a minimum of 20% service fee / tip on top of the bill, even if the standard of service doesn't warrant it.
The calamari appetizer was good, and the hot crab dip appetizer was fair. The view of the river was lovely.
However, due to a combination of aggravatingly slow service at the beginning, confusion over tables, but mostly an ordering process that was anything but user-friendly (even the server got it wrong twice), we left after eating our appetizers, foregoing the dinner that we had planned on for more than a month. Both diners on this reservation agreed that they would not go to this restaurant again.
We were celebrating my mother’s birthday. We loved the food, drinks, service and overall atmosphere. Would have loved to have had a table by the window so we could see the water. Not sure how you make that happen. We like the new way to order as you go. We will be back!
The service was excellent. Each staff member was friendly. Every item I ordered was cooked perfectly and arrived sooner than expected. Our server Patricia took great care of us. I highly recommend coming here.
The view over the confluence of the rivers is beautiful and the food was excellent. The only negative is the process of ordering which you do on an app on your phone or a tablet that they give you. The servers are relegated to bringing the food that you've ordered on the app. There is less interaction with staff than at a typical restaurant. The restaurant imposes a 20% service charge, which is effectively a mandatory tip. Makes sense the restaurant would have to do that, since you feel like you are getting less service than at a typcial restaurant.
Understanding restaurant staff shortages due to the pandemic, but this was close to my worse dining experience ever. I am a retired software engineer and usually don't have trouble with apps but this one was difficult to navigate. Someone else's name came up that we were 'dining' with. We had ordered 2 items and the total showed us $90, which was incorrect. We flagged down someone to help. Once we gave a credit card to begin the order process, the individual corrected it and came over to show that it was correct. What about the seniors with no smart devices? What do they do? No ‘service’ to speak of and then a mandatory 20% service fee. Just place your order and wait for someone to drop it off at your table. No bread brought to the table. We drove from an hour away and are very disappointed. I hope that this new way is a trial and that it goes away. If not, you are going to lose diners.
Super meal good drinks and can’t beat the view. The servers were obliging and attentive
Food and drinks were great, great decor and views but during our anniversary visit the large group next to us was so loud and disturbing we couldn’t hear ourselves talk and all of the issues they were causing took away our server for the entire dinner. We will be returning but probably not to this location. The restaurant was very apologetic-we we’re not upset with them, just mainly disappointed with the environment we lucked out and we’re around. I will recommend this restaurant to a friend for an earlier reservation
It was a great experience for my first time. I was very impressed with the ambiance of the restaurant. I will definitely return.
The meal and atmosphere here were very nice with views of the water, and very good food. HOWEVER, the open table online ordering system is an absolute DISASTER. You have to order your own food, on your phone, and coordinate with your table mates to try and make your food try and come out at the same time. You also have to time ordering apps, salads, soups and meals such that they come out in the order you desire (we failed at both of these things). With this system, you have no server, just random staff who comes by to deliver the food with no idea what you ordered. You push a button (think flight attendant call bell) if you want something (more water, etc.) - ours was never answered. On top of this, they impose an automatic 20% service charge for the non-service. There were plenty of servers hanging around the bar chatting, and occasionally running to the kitchen to deliver food, but NO personal service.
This system likely works at a fast food counter, and might work at a Chili's or Applebee's, but this is a FINE DINING restaurant with gourmet food and prices ($300 for 4 people). I don't object to the price - I expect that for fine dining - but a large part of an eat-in fine dining experience is the service and attention. With this, it's essentially ordering takeout and then sitting in the restaurant building to eat it.
Great food, but as long as this system remains, we will NOT be back.
Our group had an amazing time celebrating a birthday. Highly recommend. We’ll be back!
We are from Atlanta and visit the Hopewell area each month seeing family. We will make this a must do each visit.
Sid was our waitress. She is awesome and has good service!
Food was just ok. But the bar side view and service were great.
It was a date night for us and we usually love the Boathouse for such occasions. It was beautiful sitting outside overlooking the river at the Boathouse at City Point and we were comfortable even though it was a warm night. Service was good and we don’t object to the added service charge. Our first disappointment came when we realized the menu did not include a couple of our favorite dishes - the spinach pear salad and pan seared scallops are no longer available. We were told the menu has been scaled back due to Covid. We ordered other seafood dishes and were disappointed with the quality - the grilled shrimp was over cooked and a little bland and the seafood combination plate not that great either. Definitely not as good as usual and not a great value for the money.
The patio deck is calming. I had a very nice experience with friends.
The overall atmosphere was amazing. Food was brought out in a timely manner and cooked to perfection. Definitely recommend the crab and artichoke dip as an appetizer. The service was outstanding, our waitress Cyd was awesome. Not to mention the complimentary dessert for our anniversary. Definitely will be coming back.
The automated self order system is just horrible. The customer service person could have taken our order three times in the time it took to work thru the screens. Not what you expect for a +$100 bill.
Great service and food! Will visit again soon and often!
the payment system is the worst I've experienced. It is cumbersome and takes too long and no one even bothers to offer you a drink while you are typing in your order. Too bad, because the place is very pretty. I would not go back.
Lovely day, a lovely setting for a quiet brunch. My hubby and I sat outside and while it was a little warm, the ambiance was perfect. Not loud at all. Service was done through the phone, but it was easy to order and the food arrived hot and delicious. I do recommend the shrimp and grits. Truly an enjoyable time.
The experience was horrible. Basically ordering at McDonalds is much easier and pleasant than the service was at the Boathouse last night. Their system is so unpleasant. We have been to The Boathouse at City Point many times and thoroughly enjoyed it until last night. (Food was good once we got it).
The wait staff is there just to explain how to use your phone to order your own food via an app on your phone and to walk plates back and forth. It’s not a restaurant, it’s an iPhone buffet. The view is nice, but the service is DIY, and the food is average and significantly overpriced for the quality. Fine for a workday lunch, but nothing else.
It was difficult to enjoy our evening out with our group when we had to be responsible for placing our orders and timing it so all the food did not come out at the same time. When having to spend time doing this, the timing of our items being served was still off. Some of our group received food well in advance of others and then sat and watched us eat! The food was delicious, but the time we had to spend ordering for ourselves took away from the experience we hoped for in going out to a nice restaurant with friends. The 20%gratuity automatically included is questionable when we as customers are doing part of the the responsibilities expected of the wait staff.
We had a good family time celebrating my husband’s birthday the food was good the only thing is I wish that my steak was cooked a little more well done like I asked. Other than that all was really good
Amazing view and automated ordering so you don’t wait for your server. I wish all restaurants would do that!
Loved it. Shrimp Tacos very tasty. River views outstanding. Can't wait for another opportunity to return. Close to the Hopewell Riverwalk too.
The staff is very unhelpful with questions about the beer selection or menu. They add 20% to the tab (which I would give for decent service) even though there is NO service. The ONLY way to see a menu is on your phone unless you happen to find someone with a tablet. They then want your info to see the menu, a credit card to place an order. It was all very frustrating, stressful and uncalled for. No personal interaction at all. Also, the beer and food we finally ordered took so long to come out that we were late for our concert.
Ordering is a bit awkward using the scan to website. Placed appetizers and dinner items. Got appetizers when dinner order came. Will know better next.
Cydney is always great!! We are regulars here and it feels great that the staff recognizes and caters to us! Our favorite spot!
Very nice restaurant with an amazing view ❗️❗️
Boathouse was very covid precaution oriented. Clear and helpful guidance if you needed it to order.
The use of the app to order is unacceptable. A lot of elderly people would like to dine there however they struggle with using the app, which is not very user friendly. We saw a table of ladies get up and leave because they didn’t want to use the app. It is my understanding that the owner gets a $ kickback each time the app is used. Our waitress was most helpful but she was over loaded as she was the only waitress in the restaurant during our stay (12-2:30). I think the customers are led to believe that the 20% service charge that Is automatically added to your bill is a tip for the waitress but that is not the case. At best the waitress only gets a very small portion of the 20%. We had 4 ladies in our party and we all ordered the wedge salads which were mediocre at best.
Unfortunately, there was only one waitress for the whole restaurant for lunch, poor girl also had to serve as bartender! She was graceful under pressure, even gladly took our group pic outside for a birthday celebration. The Chesapeake Chicken wasn't as tasty as before and it was obvious that they were understaffed. It's a pattern that's all too common now, businesses can't find employees!!!
We have eaten at the Boathouse several times and enjoy taking out-of-town friends there. Lovely setting, excellent food, good service.
The one thing I don't like is having to order virtually. It is confusing and somewhat over the top. I also don't like entering my charge card details, particularly if I am paying cash.
The online ordering for in person dining was horrible considering the service button on the table did not alert the wait staff. There is an automatic 20%, but there is not service being provided by the staff besides the food delivery.
Do not like the new dining experience of ordering on a tablet.Very confusing and less personal. Food quality has also changed for the worse. Food was mediocre.
