The Blackwall Barn and Lodge
Had a wonderful experience, the service, food and staff were great. I look forward to my next visit.
The restaurant was recommended by a neighbor so we decided to try it. Although located in a rather out of the way space, the Barn is quite dramatic and attractive. Parking was easy and free. The inside is huge with several different eating areas including an outdoor space that looked great but was full. Service was slow and spotty as was the food. In their price point, I expected high quality and was mostly disappointed. Fried green tomatoes consisted of but two different size slices. Gazpacho was sweet (not to my liking) and really small for $10. Entrees were better but my shrimp and grits was mediocre at best. Desserts were the best part of the meal. For a nearly $300 bill for four, I expected better.
The hostess were nice and professional. Megan, the waitress was informative about the food and drink selections. The bread received with my appetizer was burnt, and the wings were overfried/overcooked so they were not enjoyable. Also, the beef rib was fatty; therefore, most of it went to waste. The Apple cinnamon bread pudding was dry, bland and simply not worth the money. Additionally, we also had to discard some of the food because there are a lot of flies on the terrance, and they were landing on the food so I discarded the food that was affected.
The entire visual experience of this restaurant met at the expectations I saw online it doesn't matter what business was here previously this current establishment has made it its own. Their drinks are unique their flavors stand out and there are a number of options to hold special events
We were hoping for a true farm-to-table experience and left feeling like we ate an overpriced chain restaurant.
The food was very good to excellent. It is easy to recommend it just for that but our service including being seated at a table with the sun beating on us was so so.
The ambiance was absolutely everything!! Aesthetically pleasing, the food, drinks and staff were all A+ from the hostess to servers. We were seated right away, drinks and food were served quickly and was hot. We were seated outside in the patio area were there was a full bar, projection TV,s and flat screens. There were also private cabanas!!! Definitely will be back
I recommend the chef season the food better. We did not enjoy the flavor of the brunch menu and were grateful to have the meal comped as a result. I will give them time to replace the chef before returning, as the place is beautiful and the variety of offerings is good...just lacked flavor.
Everything was perfect!
The food, service and atmosphere was great. My only issue was the powerful fan that was blowing in the back bar area. Will visit again though
This was the perfect dinner date place. Nice scenery and nice choices of food.
Went there for Restaurant Week and the food was good, however it took way to long to get our entrées. We had to inquire several times and our server wasn't sure why it was taking so long. Once we finished our entrées within minutes, they served our dessert.. timing all off.
It was a lucky find. Honestly never heard of this restaurant before. It’s beautiful, service was excellent and the food was just great. Definitely will recommend it to my friends and will return as well
Two of us went to The Blackwall Barn to take advantage of the MD Restaurant week menu. There was a nice variety even though the Restaurant Week menu is small. The variety of options was nice. My first course from the Restaurant Week Menu was the fried green tomatoes. They were light and very flavorful. There was a little spicy kick to them, which was unexpected. The pork belly was the 2nd course and was amazingly flavorful. When I finished, I wished I had more. The final course was the dessert and I had an espresso creme brulee. The only reason I did not eat the entire dessert was because I was so full (often with Restaurant week menus, the portions are clearly smaller), I couldn't finish it. It came home with me in a doggy bag!
I think they are short staffed. Our meal took a longer than usual to come out. The food wasn't really hot, I had ordered soup and it was just warm. You could tell the food had been sitting a bit. Also, my husbands vegetables were barely cooked, still too hard to even get a fork through them. It is a nice place, I just think they are suffering, as everyone is, with being short staffed.
I will go back and try again.
Beautiful place! Very good wine list as well. Menu is interesting but execution isn't awesome. Mussels were small, overcooked and the apple wasn't a good choice. Prime rib was overcooked and had to be sent back. Sides were warm at best. Whipped potatoes were more like smashed potatoes. Sevice was lackadasical and unprofessional.
Nice place with good atmosphere and food. Service was great!
The service was exceptional, as always. Our server went out of his way to make sure we had a good experience for my wife’s birthday. Will return.
Had tomato with buratta salad - delicious, as was the crab and avocado dip. The short rib flat bread just oozes flavor - a definite new favorite. You can’t beat the Patz and Hall Pinot to round it all out. The restaurant is unexpectedly beautiful- it feels more like Park City or Aspen. The Barn will quickly become a go to for us in the area’
The food was bland. No taste. Mashed potatoes were dry and flaky. Chicken had no seasoning. Calamari wasn't cooked well. The dessert was good
Great service, good food, way overpriced
Our reservations were on time and the hostess was very pleasant. We were not rushed thru our our drinks and appetizer to order our entree. Dinner was excellent.
We had to save some dinner to take home to leave room for dessert which was also excellent. Eating out side was very comfortable and felt safe. Our server was very helpful and informative about the dishes on the menu.
My friend and I went last year in the middle of the pandemic and had a much better experience all around than yesterday. I was a little surprised that they were serving a buffet but still participated. There were no other menu options to be had. The place was packed. There seem to be some issues keeping the items stocked on the tables, but acceptable due to the amount of people there. Plates were also in a bit of a shortage. My biggest issue was with the food itself. The cold shrimp and cocktail sauce seem to be bad. I took one bite of a shrimp and stopped. I also got a veggie and cheese omelet that did not taste right either. The bacon (what was left of it in the pan) was very fatty and should have been cooked longer. The sausage patties almost had the texture of being boiled instead of cooked on the flat top. There were no scrambled eggs with the breakfast items, the only choice was to get an omelet made and the line for that was quite long.
$42 for this buffet was just too much for the lower quality we recieved.
Seating wise, I had requested outside which we received however the set up was of poor management. The table we were given was at knee level. This was a rectangle table with a small gas fire pit that was designed inside a 5"x20" space inside of a 3'x4' table. The entire top was covered in glass for brunch so that was ok, but my friend and I had to lean over and not sit up straight during our meal. Just one last thing, our table was against the wall and we were blocked in by other tables whose chairs impeded the walkways. It was as simple as turning one table 45 degrees so the outstretched chairs weren't up against a column on either side. We actually got up from our table before we were ready to leave because that one tables occupants left to go to the buffet.
This experience was enough for me not to want to go back, which is a shame because the first time we went was fantastic.
Food was very inconsistent. Cheese was just sprinkled on noodles for Mac and cheese. Roast beef was very chewy and couldn’t be cut by the knife. Also a country brunch should have biscuits not just cold bread. Also why is coffee and soda not included when juice is. The omelettes and grits were really good.
I took wife there for dinner as they have a vegan menu for her diet. The menu is diverse, food was very good and well plated. The atmosphere is first class and a great "outdoor" area as well. Only disappointment was cost of drinks! $20 for a small pour(likely a shot) for Casimigos tequila was actually outrageous. I was planning to visit again with a few couples, however they are drinkers and this will deter me for sure!
Food was very good but the service was outstanding. Very refreshing to have service like this these days.
We had a new server that was not familiar with the menu or job..besides her inneficient service, everything else was just spectacular.
I ordered prime rib, and it didn’t originally come out with the correct temperature. I sent it back, and they must have microwaved it because the plate was scorching and all the juices were gone, and it was overcooked. Other than that, the server was excellent and the management team was understanding. It is a beautiful restaurant with a peaceful and uplifting vibe.
This was my second visit. My first visit was phenomenal so, I figured I would try the restaurant again. The one positive note was in regard to the waiter and assistants that serviced our table. Unfortunately, the food was bland and one item had to be sent back to the kitchen. Also, my smoked old fashion had too much ice, lacked smoked simple syrup, and was void of alcohol. My guests nor I enjoyed our meals. I will not return.
Restaurant is very nice. Food is quite tasty and the service was good.
We were warmly greeted the moment we walked in and that great service continued throughout our entire time. All of our food was amazing.
From the moment I walked in the door - the hostess (greeter), ambiance, food, and service provided by our waiter were everything I desire when I dine out! I also like the fact that it is family / child-friendly.
Excellent arrive and food as always. Have been here several times and is always a positive experience.
The cow chairs were dirty (look down on the sides and there’s a whole meal worth of crumbs). The barrel table also had remnants of previous meals. The food and value was pretty good but it would’ve been a 10/10 if the table and chairs were clean. The service was awesome.
ABSOLUETLY LOVED AND WILL BE BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN!
Food was served longer than expected. Food was cold and salty. Quality of food was poorer than expected. Overall experience was poor. For the value and much feedback from others who have been to this restaurant, their reviews are right on cue. Noisier than normal and the food was not what one would expect.
A wonderful place with great food. Beautiful setting for a wedding reception or special occasion.
Need more vegetable choices for people with food allergies. Food was very good.
Great atmosphere. The service and food was top notch. Highly recommend the flaming crab dip and Chilean Sea Bass.
