The food is very enjoyable with a wide selection to meet many food interests. Service is moderate since you never know who is your server and who to request an additional bottle of wine from or other needs throughout your evening. The staff hustles but sometimes seems unfocused. These are difficult times for restaurants and their staffs so we gave allowances for this factor
Wonderful meal as always!
It's a very nice place, perfect for a date night!!
Food and service was excellent, the planes flying overhead were a little noisy and the wine was pricy.
Solare is always great. It's the perfect combination of keeping Italian food simple, but with outstanding ingredients and cooking, and slight flavor additions/changes to keep it interesting. An unusually great restaurant.
The menu was interesting and we enjoyed the diversity and use of fresh locally sourced ingredients. We sat outside overlooking a park like area on their verandah. Heaters were available and tables were well spaced out. Restaurant is in a quiet part of town, which provided a relaxed ambience. Food was delicious. My husband and I split the fresh local heirloom tomato salad. For entrees we had chicken marsala and linguine with sweet manila clams. Both excellent and rivaled any top notch Italian restaurant. Not inexpensive but well worth the price tag. Definitely would return if we are in the same area again.
Risotto was way below average. Rice was not cooked enough, too much butter, too salty. Even the scallops were too salty. We didn’t want to create a fuss and reject it and order something else instead.
The deserts were good/very good.
The waitress seemed to be stressed out and probably got annoyed by our asking too many questions when asking for advice on the menu.
The continuous noise from airplanes taking off from nearby SD airport is something you should know about.
All in all, the restaurant wants to be much more than what it is. About 33% priced too high.
3 star rating.
Outside dining a bummer with airplanes
We asked to be seated outside which, as it turns out, is not a patio but seemed to be a busy main walkway/pass through to the rest of the establishment.
The inside seemed to be where most were seated so I am guessing that the inside provides a nicer ambiance.
Expectations were raised since this restaurant had been listed in San Diego Magazines “Best of.” Our food was “OK.”
It was perfect in every way !
Food is normally excellent, but was extremely salty last night. Not just "restaurant salty" but really salty. Had the halibut dinner.
Excellent food. Attentive server.
Great food, good drinks, good service. They even made a “not on the menu” pasta Alfredo for my Grandson. Another fine experience at Solare.
First time at Solare Ristorante Lounge. They are woefully short-staffed - we waited at least 20 minutes for a server to come to our table only to tell us she'd be "right with us" and then another 20 before she returned to take our drink order. My friend ordered a cocktail and it came right away but she was finished with it before we got our wine. We did see quite a few servers standing in front of the kitchen door talking among themselves while we were waiting - too bad none of them thought they could lend a hand to our server who was clearly overwhelmed!
The food was good though - my husband and I shared a Caesar salad and the pappardelle bolognese dish that was delicious. Plenty for the two of us to share too. The salad was a bit dry - could have used a little more dressing. Not sure if we will return to this place or not though - while the pasta dish was very good, waiting nearly 40 minutes for a drink is a bit of a downer!
Having recently returned from a long trip to Rome and Tuscany, I was very excited to see this rated so highly in the Michelin Guide. Perhaps it’s unfair after eating from the tables of masters in their own country, but this was merely an afterglow of the excellencies of true Tuscan cuisine. With that said, the service and ambiance were beyond expectation. The presentation of each dish was very carefully arranged and beautiful. We tried the lamb, beef cheek, gnocchi, and lasagna. If we go again, which is a possibility, we would all try different dishes. The bruschetta was very good.
Really good food! Socially distanced tables and wonderful outdoor dining! Great prices! Love the weekend specials!
The arugula and pear salad was fantastic as was the fish of the day w/pistachio and olive crust. I purposely asked for an outdoor table. There is good space between tables and its quiet except for the planes taking off from the airport, which makes conversation impossible for a bit each time a plane leaves. Of course that can't be helped given the location and I have been assured that indoors the noise level from the planes is almost unnoticeable. After the Covid threat levels decline, I would select an indoors location, but both are available during the reservation process.
Food and service was amazing, def recommend!!!
My husband and I had an early seating before a concert, and the service was fantastic (thanks, Evan!), I had the Pici d’Brici and my husband had the chicken Marsala. Both were delicious, food came quick, the decor is great, and we were in and out in the perfect amount of time! I also highly recommend the minestrone! What a great first experience! We’ll be back!
Love the food, really great. The Caesar salad is special. My partner loved her zucchini pasta. My friend adored her tiramisu. The rub? The dang airplanes. We sat outside w our dog. It would be perfect without the planes.
The food was AMAZING!! the Service was AMAZING!! We will be back again. Only little issue was the noise from the aircraft's taking off. But again it WAS Amazing Food, Service and everything else!!
We celebrated our wedding anniversary in the "wine room," a private dining area inside the restaurant. I had notified the restaurant that it was a special occasion. Several hours before our reservation, "Bella" from the restaurant called and asked if we would like to dine in the wine room! She added we could always change our minds and eat on the beautiful patio if my wife preferred. When we arrived at the restaurant and approached the hostess area, this young woman gave us a big smile and -- using our names -- congratulated us on our anniversary, even getting the number right. Our server, Marie, did the same. It made us feel very special. During the evening Randy, the owner, stopped in and said hello, and congratulated us as well. Of course, the food was amazing. The pasta is fresh and homemade. The line list extensive, with options for anyone's budget, and the service excellent.
I would highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions, and just for those seeking an amazing Italian dinner. Also, the fact it's located just a little outside Liberty Station is a plus, as the parking is free and plentiful. After dinner we walked to Liberty Station and enjoyed the night air, and the sounds of people out and about. Thanks to all at Solare for making our anniversary that much more special.
Awesome experience, can’t wait to return!
It always been a lovely experience every time we come here. Great place to celebrate any occasion.
We ate outside, safety protocols in place. Food and service were excellent. Never felt rushed.
Another outstanding dining experience a Solare's. Food was terrific and it was so very pleasant to be outside. We will be back - as we have been many times.
Loved it! Great food, service and ambiance.
Overall experience was awesome. Great service, excellent food and yummy desserts. Beautiful restaurant. Loved it!
Really amazing food and service. Great price for the quality level.
Very good staff providing nice service, and the food is authentic Italian
The food and the service were excellent. Unfortunately, and this can’t be avoided due to the restaurant’s location, the planes overhead every 4 minutes or so make this restaurant an unlikely choice for folks looking for a site to hold a conversation. Darn. Such good food!
Exquisite ambiance, excellent wine selection, exceptional food. It’s the place to go with the one and with a company. We celebrated my wife’s birthday here and enjoyed warm and friendly atmosphere. Truffle risotto is a must - go for it! Beef chicks are also wonderful main! Owner Randy, who operates the place with his sons, is very welcoming and friendly, so you feel home. Recommendation: GO DINE
One of the most outstanding restaurants in Southern California. My highest possible recommendation.
This was our first visit and everything was top notch. Highly recommended.
What happed to Salare? Was my “go to” Italian restaurant. OMG… Will not return.
Love love love Solare!
We've had take out here few times but first time eating there. Great food from starters to desserts and friendly server.
My husband and I arrived a few minutes early for our reservation. We sat at the bar. The bartender Tommy was fun, personable and made killer cocktails for us. They stock a quality selection of bourbon. When our friends arrived we were escorted to a nicely set table and given the right amount of time to peruse the menu, which was accessible through Qscan. Two of us ordered lasagna which was an ample portion. I ordered the seafood special which was halibut. It was perfectly prepared and seemed so fresh. The fourth person ordered the rack of lamb which was beautifully presented and delicious. We have been to Solare several times, but save it for special occasions since it is a bit expensive. But, well worth it.
The food is always excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and the chef wonderfully accommodating. The gluten free bread and pasta is delicious and the menu options varied for all tastes and lifestyles. This is my favorite restaurant in San Diego.
Great eggplant parmigiana! Very good service
Great host -
