Fabulous spiny lobster special!
Dinner with friends recently was my first experience at Solare. Our online reservation was honored on time however we were informed at the end of our dinner that the table was needed. It was not handled well and I would recommend that patrons are informed of the time limit when the reservation is made. This would enable the customers to be more attentive of the time.
The "manager" who informed us that it was time to leave was dressed unprofessionally and instead of an appropriate facial covering wore a bandana around his face. This is a poor image for a restaurant of this caliber, and most importantly provides no real protection from airborne diseases.
Our server was attentive given how busy she was with other tables. The table we were seated at was near a pass through for all staff and thus chaotic and noisy; I would request another table if we return in the future.
Finally, the food did not live up to expectations. The mussels appetizer was flavorful but the muscles were puny! My eggplant entree lacked seasoning. The dessert, pistachio creme brulee, lacked eye appeal and flavor...would never recommend it or order it again.
Questionable as to when/if I will return.
Waited more than half an hour at the outdoor wait stand for a table we had reserved. Tried to be patient with all of the understaffing issues restaurants are experiencing and I'm sure they are trying but it was just not an enjoyable evening with dishes coming out cold and drinks not coming. Hanger steak and spiny lobster mains were good, but bitter tasting eggplant parm and pasta side that, as my daughter said, "tasted like the bottom of the ocean" were decidedly not. Hopefully they will get it together, but currently... no.
This is a superb Italian restaurant with authentic regional Italian cuisine and an excellent wine selection. The owner, Randy, is welcoming and incredibly informative about the food and wine.
Good wines, pasta was great! Sat outdoors and it was warm with the heat lamps. Standard incoming jet traffic to San Diego International punctuating the restaurant sounds.
We felt we got good service and great food at Solare. Street parking was easy to find.
We decided to try the restaurant based on the overall rating and location. We went for lunch on a Saturday and the place was empty. The hostess was also the waitress doing double duty. The salad was good, but unfortunately, the food was terrible. It tasted straight out of a can. It was so bad we did not it it or take it home. We ordered five different dishes and nobody liked the food. It was a great disappointment. Not sure if it was ever good, or if it went down hill with covid.

disappointed Open Table online would not let us select inside table. The service appeared to be rushed, such as the salads arriving when we had barely sipped our cocktails, had to ask several times for various items like bread, olive oil, salt shaker. The entrée arrived too fast, too, but the wine was delayed for quite a while. This was all before the biggest part of the dinner rush. We have experience at Solare, expected better. It looked like there were plenty of personnel available, so????? It just did not add up to a great evening.

Two for a birthday dinner. All the food was very good to excellent. Service was prompt and friendly, but not solicitous. Portions were just right, rather than over-the-top. Minestrone was so rich that I thought it had a marrow base, but turned out to be vegetarian. Pear salad very good. Sea bass done just right, and scallops with risotto had real black summer truffle shavings. Nice dessert, and wine by the glass was excellent with a generous pour. Good dessert (chocolate salami) and grappa were great as well. Outside seating was quiet except for being under the takeoff path for the airport. $212 incl. T&T. Only negative: Folding slat chairs were poor, they brought us different folding chairs with upholstered seats, which were fair.
Food was delicious, service was slow. I would recommend this restaurant.
The food was great, but the service lacked. Our hostess greeted us with a blank stare. We were led to our table, without any welcoming words. The special, with was the reason I went there, was unavailable, though the waiter told us all about it when seated. My wife’s dish was covered in cheese, despite us saying no dairy. Lastly, our glasses sat empty for the majority of our meal. I’m not saying don’t go, just giving a fair review for our experience.
On way to Hawaii with an overnight in SD. Restaurant is locally owned and it shows with great pride to every detail. Quality of food was incredible.
The food was amazing. I got the Risotto with Sea Scallops. My husband got the Lasagna. When he didn't want the Bechamel sauce the manager came right out to fix it. We were all happy celebrating with our friend from Boston. Highly recommend you make a reservation in advance!

Sat outside. Have really nice heat lamps. However we were not in the line of sight of the wait staff, therefore waited long times for service. Food was wonderful.
Solare is my favorite Italian restaurant in San Diego. This time selection was a little less but probably because I was there on a Monday and due to the pandemic. Still, the food was amazing as usual.
Concert and date night
Another great meal at Solare. Both the minestrone and butternut squash soup were excellent. The pistachio crusted fish was very fresh, served with roasted potatoes and spinach. My husband had pizza - nice thin crust and tasty sauce. Very good wine list - emphasis is more on Italian wines. Hope to return soon.
The food is always so good! Sadly, the service has gone down hill. Starting with the hostess who never made eye contact or talked when we checked in. She just started walking to our table. We were also ignored for the majority of our meal and when the waitress returned she commented, “You ate fast”. If she had checked in on us when the meal was delivered, we would have asked for another round of drinks as well as a spoon for the pasta. What happened Solare? Your service use to be impeccable and welcoming.
It’s easy to see why Solare earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Exceptional food at fair prices, great service, and owner Randy Smerik checking in on each guest to ensure a perfect experience!
First time eating here and was not disappointed, the entire experience and especially the food was EXCELLENT!!! We'll be back, soon!

Great meal! We had calamari to start, then I had oso busco and she had the lamb. Kid had spaghetti and meatballs that was delicious as well. Will for sure cone back.
The food was delicious. A bit on the pricey side, but it was worth it. I had the pistachio encrusted halibut (a special) and my wife had the truffle-infused risotto with scallops. We had the tempura-style shrimp and calamari which was delectable.
Overall a very positive experience. The only downside is if you are sitting outside, the location is underneath a common airport flight path, so it was a bit loud, but we tuned it out due to the delicious food.

We had a very nice dinner with my Uncle who is from San Diego. This is his favorite Italian restaurant. I recommend the lasagna, the clams or the mussels. The bolognese was OK, but not outstanding in our opinion. The cocktails and wine were very good.
Lovely ambience. Friendly service, if a bit rushed. It was very busy, but service was still attentive. Outstanding meal.
Superior in every way … food was outstandingly good for all three of us. We had the special salmon, the special gnocchi and the lasagna. Salads were all excellent as well.
We’ve eaten at Solare many times; this was one of our best meals there although it’s always great.
The menu was limited. The food wasnt fresh and didnt taste the same. This place was our main hangout for Best Italian in San Diego. This visit changed everything to the point of not returning. I am sorry to see this place go downhill.
