Seared Japanese Wagyu Beef Sushi
2 Kinds of Sushi Rolls
Safety precautions, ambiance, food, service…everything was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the day’s specialty sushi, which were fresh and delicious. We always like the authentic Izakaya food.
Sushi not as fresh as I was expecting. We ordered Omakase while waitress was seating us down and she told sushi chef. Waited 15 minutes and nothing so I reordered the OmaKase. What a miscommunication! He even acknowledged when the waitress told him Omakase. Chef didn’t even ask is what we want the whole 15 minutes sitting at the bar. Mediocre sushi with mediocre service. Didn’t even say Happy Anniversary even though I mentioned it open table and while eating.
We had a great experience here! The food and service were excellent. The sushi was delicious, and the kids loved their kids meals and Japanese sodas. Definitely recommend!
First family get together since the pandemic! Food was good, service very slow and inconsistent. Server brought wrong order once, forgot to put in second order at all, had to be reminded.
Love it every time! They have the best sashimi in SD
The restaurant is hard to find, next to a restaurant with an outside band, and has no paper menu which makes it extremely difficult to order either happy hour our regular memo items from your little cell phone and it has very few veggie options. Other than that, the food and service was good.
We had a reservation. Two of the employees completely ignored us when we arrived. The lady that’s familiar with us as we are regulars, sat us.
The food is very fresh and delicious. We ordered…
Cucumber with sesame oil
Yellowtail with jalapeño carpaccio
Plum wine x4
We love coming here as we love the food. The only negative is that the customer service is never consistent. If you’re lucky, you get the attentive nice employee. Rest of the time you get a person who acts like they’re doing a favor.
Really great food, everything we ordered was so good!
Great outside seating with great view too.
Service was just right, we will go back for sure.
Everything was fantastic! Not the first time we have dined there and not the last.
Another wonderful dining experience at Shimbashi in Del Mar Plaza. We like everything about this restaurant.
Outdoor patio is a an beautiful venue with stunning coastline views. The food and service were outstanding. We will be back.
Made reservations (recommend doing this, and earlier in the evening as they do last call which feels rushed). Food is beautifully presented and tastes awesome!
The staff is always amazing. The food and drink pretty spot on.
Had a great time catching up with old friends.
The food was amazing, but the server forgot quite a lot of items and was still rushing us even though we had to wait longer for the forgotten items.
It’s really a sad story. Our res was at 6pm, but we had thought it was at 7pm. Called the restaurant and arrived right before 7pm with 2 kids and newborn in tow and made a commitment to leave by 8pm since they had other reservations for the table.
Starting at 725pm, at least 3 people one after another came up and kept saying it’s last call for food for you. Mind you the restaurant at that time was at less than 30% capacity. We were forced to put in a final order. At 740pm my daughter (6 year olds) asked for a second cucumber roll, but the response was NO to her face. Heartless!!!
As for the food, fish was fresh but seriously heavy on the rice. Best to stick to Sashimi. And the portions are quite small. Overall value is ok. Sake selection is good, but seriously overpriced.
When we left, right at 8pm, the place was less that 50% full and there was no one waiting. If you like dining and gun point, this is a the place for you. And if you want Samae, one the servers pretending to be the manager, would be more than happy to be as rude as possible until you vacate.
Good luck to you all, we won’t be back!
Great sushi and Japanese food! Beautiful location.
The best Japanese food in Del Mar and great location!
Fun good food not as nice as last time blamed us for an order that was incorrect but we were celebrating my sons 16th so we made the best of it!
Awesome date nite dinner. Order the Chefs Special Sushi plate. You will be so happy you did.
Great happy hour
Really like this place. Surprise it doesn't get higher rating.. if we weren't into $35 a glass in carton saki our bill would have been reasonable too.. so if my dink for value was due my guilt re living large. So many choices on the menu... nice new awning for coverage in outside dining with the loveliest setting. Speaking of lovely.. the waitresses!!
A night to remember for the two of us. Enjoyed the cucumber and lychee martinis for drinks. Takoyaki was superb. Nasu miso itame could have used more of the miso "dressing," but the vegetables were the perfect texture and a little soy sauce made up for lack of flavor. Black cod sashimi was divine (when is black cod not divine?). Was feeling adventurous and ordered the shiokara light, which was very intense for our palates but pleasant enough to eat with a little soy sauce and the full squeeze of lemon. Karaage was very juicy. Salmon and mushroom rice porridge was more of an ochazuke than a porridge (rice grains were not mushy), dashi was of excellent body and flavor. Green tea cake to conclude was good, but unremarkable.
As for ambiance, we dined on the patio, which had ample heat lamps. When seated, cannot see the horizon but the sun is clearly visible right up until before it fully sets.
Eager to return, specifically to focus on their sashimi and nigiri selection. As well as to get more takoyaki!
We had made a 6pm reservation for our anniversary dinner. We were promptly seated at a nice outdoor table. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable. All the food was delicious! We ordered various small plates and shared a carafe of sake. We ate and enjoyed watching the sun set from our table. It was a lovely evening!
Amazing food! Highly recommend.
Best post or mid Covid restaurant experience with great servers who were friendly and hustled the entire time! So nice to have a place we can enjoy with great food and service! Finally!
Service was excellent and food was great! The location is pretty nice and ample parking (first hour free). Great place to have sushi and hang out!
Disappointed in the food quality. Salmon collar was overcooked, and the texture was tough and chewy. Sushi was inconsistent. A few pieces were tasty while others were overly salted or overpowered by wasabi. Service was friendly and helpful.
Lovely sushi, lovely view, good service and a lovely evening.
Chicken was tangy overcooked. Otherwise good. Service was very good.
Nearly every visit to San Diego means a quick trip to Del Mar to enjoy this restaurant. The fish and seafood are excellent quality and chefs gladly share their recommendations about what is particularly good.
Wonderful as always…
Ambiance was lovely sitting outside, but under cover. Peak ocean view was a bonus. Sushi was very fresh and yummy. We first got the edamame, which was okay and needed some salt. We then ordered a couple of the specialty rolls, the spicy tuna and another one that I cant recall and both were very good. Then we got 2 regular sushi rolls, California roll and a spicy yellowtail, both excellent. Good wine options, the Ferrari Carano is one of my favorite Chardonnay, perfect for the warm evening.
Consistently great Japanese food prepared with care. Sushi rolls were fresh and flavorful. Covered outdoor seating area gave more than adequate protection from the sun with optimal air circulation. The band playing on the neighboring rooftop patio was an added bonus.
Fabulous location! Staff is very friendly and accommodating! Food was delicious! We will definitely be coming back!
The ambiance is just OK, however the food is outstanding! Like most restaurants right now, understaffed…be patient.
You are mostly paying up for the view and location.
Wonderful experience for my husband's birthday dinner. The food was delicious, the service was great.
The quality of the sashimi and sushi was outstanding.. really fresh. Sashimi - Belly Salmon, Tuna, Hamachi. Sushi Uni & Ikura. Spicy Salmon hand roll and Unagi Domburi. The Oyster Shots.. awesome. The best Sashimi and Sushi I have had in San Diego County over the last 20+ years. A little on the $$$ side of the fence.
Food is of the highest quality. Very conscientious wait staff and what a beautiful view.
