A favorite place of ours!
It was ok. Not great -not terrible. Chips were cold and tasted stale. Salsa was good. I had brisket tacos that needed more flavor. Service was good.
First time dining - it was quite pleasant and tasty. It's a neighborhood gem and great for Mexican cuisine. I will return.
Service, food and ambiance were great. The portion size of the dishes we had were more than adequate. We both ordered the Machaca and neither one of us could finish the entire dish.
We do not live in the district, but visit quite often, so we research our options ahead of time. We were staying in an area that was quite new to us, and we loved it! But there were no “tried and true “ places to hold in reserve just in case.
So Mayahuel was a very lucky find for us.
Small, intimate place with great ambiance, we ate outdoors because it was a beautiful evening for late August in DC. It was very busy! But the staff was friendly and gracious throughout!
Food was very good, margaritas using the house tequila great. Chips were from the usual colors of corn, but each color had a different spice, which of course went well with and enhanced the flavor of the salsa. We enjoyed the salmon la plancha entree and the fish tacos. Both were well prepared and not the usual Mexican fare.
Yrs, we would return, but not when there is a conference with multiple thousands of attendees just up the hill.
Great service. Waitress very attentive
We were disappointed. Drinks took a long time to come. Chips were stale. Tacos were okay—not bad but nothing special. The cost was high for what it is.
Great tacos and margaritas. We ordered sides of corn and plantains to share; both were delicious.
The restaurant was understaffed and service suffered because of it. The food was good, drinks were not good. Drinks on the rocks we served it up glasses with a mound of ice. One person ordered a strawberry with a sugar rim that came with a salt rim. My first drink was good, yet the second drink was vastly different and undrinkable. IMO, this points to an issue with management - staffing and quality control.
This restaurant will surely be on our list for our next visit to DC! Great service, drinks, and generous portions!
Service was awful at first then the waitress compensated
With the variety of restaurants to choose from in this area, Mayahuel is one that you can skip. The menu was limited, food was good enough. It is an appealing restaurant in terms of the ambiance and there is outdoor seating which appeared popular. We sat indoors, however, and the service definitely suffered. It's bad when you have to wait so long for your server to pick up the check and credit card that you round up enough cash to cover the tab and tip and hand it to the bartender so you can leave.
They had both indoor and outdoor dining. It was decorated with Mexican theme and music. Convenient walk from hotel.
The food was fresh, creative, tasty and adequate quantities. We had mole, chorizo, octopus...yummy. Service was a little slow after dinner...they lost track of us as they got busy. But, I'd definitely go there again!
Great empanadas, great margaritas, great tacos, and the salads are always so fresh and delicious!
Cute outdoor seating right near the Woodley Park metro station. Cute date night spot during the warm weather.
New waiter so service was spotty. Got mains before apps and drinks. Threw odd the rhythm. But food was tasty and good portions.
Very fresh tasting meal. My husband said best taco ever! Guacamole was a little salty but good. Fun outdoor seating.
Friendly, helpful waiter. Lively atmosphere, great margaritas. Vegetable tacos and guacamole a must!
Food was hit and miss. huitlacoche quesadillas were missing huitlacoche. Tacos requEstes on corn, got flour. Margaritas lacked flavor.
Soup and sides were great. Mole was tasty but not much of it.
This is my friend's favorite, but she was disappointed too. I doubt I'll go back.
Food was good, maybe a little above average. The service was not great, but appeared that several staff were new. I think serving tacos in flour tortillas was a little surprising but maybe that’s authentic? If you had homemade tortillas, etc. that would elevate the experience. The bar punch was good!
Sat on patio and enjoyed margaritas and happy hour prices on tacos and esquites.
Unfortunately after driving 45 min and paying for parking I received the worst service from a bartender that I’ve experienced in my life. He was so rude that it felt personal.
I believe I’m a pretty nice guy and I always tip well. I was dressed normally and had taken a shower. No boogers in my nose or spinach in my teeth I hope. I’m from DC and grew up in the city so I’m used to a bit of tolerable attitude from time to time from folks. However, this experience was special. I had to check the dude on the spot and that’s not my baseline personality. So for a review I can’t really say anything about the drinks or the food. I didn’t feel welcome and I left. I could see this guy acting the same way to a less tolerant customer and getting punched in the face.
Absolutely fantastic, the meal was wonderful.
I was a bit skeptical at first, since Mexican places in DC can be trendy. However, Mayahuel's menu is genuine and the plates we tried were tasty, with authentic spices and touches! The ambience is also nice. I was well received, and the waiter was efficient. The drink menu was also varied and offered quality...
Wonderful, authentic neighborhood Mexican restaurant. It was exactly what my colleagues and I were looking for after a very long work day. The place stays busy so reservations are a good idea. (Although many thanks to the host for working us in when we showed up early and with extra hungry mouths to feed!)
We are always looking for good Mexican restaurants and this one definitely fits the bill. Food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We loved the drinks - especially spicy margarita. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant - definitely put us in good mood. We had a 8 month old baby with us and they were definitely accommodating . It appeared that they may have been short of wait staff. We always had to flag people to get what we needed.
Awesome food great atmosphere and service. Definitely will be dining here again
Service was awful. It’s a shame because the food was tasty. We waited 45 minutes for them to bring our guacamole and chips WITH the main course. When I asked the waiter why they didn’t bring our appetizers first he told me I didn’t ask to “course” the meal. Isn’t it common knowledge to bring chips and guacamole right away?! Won’t be returning.
Great food!
Wonderful presentation of food that taste great! Good value and convenient location.
Great service!
Everything was awesome! The chips and salsa I could eat all day long! Friendly service too!
Seems expensive for the area. Need greater variety on menu.
Service was great.
Amazing brisket tacos, very loud waitress was okay forgot our guacamole..
Barbacoa nachos and esquites were delicious!
Server was friendly and encouraged my dad to try beef tongue for the first time, which surprised me, but he liked it.
Very nice place and not too noisy. Service was attentive. Margaritas were very good. Portions are large so be careful ordering! Menu was very good and your typical fare.
There was a bit of confusion with our reservation. I think someone else got seated under my name so when we showed up there wasn’t a table available. We waited at the bar and enjoyed some drinks. The food was good but because of my dietary restrictions my options were pretty limited. Service was good but not remarkable.
Good food and service. Margerita’s were delicious
