Was staying at the Viceroy so made Valentines day dinner reservations. Everything was very good, including the live music they brought in for the special day. Food had lots of flavor. Only slight downside was the food was not cooked to the adequate level, scallops under cooked and shrimp over cooked. Not a biggie though

We were staying down the beach where the food was just alright. We were looking to upgrade our dinners but not stray far from our resort and did we hit a homerun by deciding on La Marea for dinner. Service was impeccable, each dish from the chefs whim to my wife's Short Ribs were impeccable. Everything had a slight twist to it that made them special. We are from Chicago area and it felt like local maestro Rick Bayless was back in the kitchen.

On vacation in Playa del Carmen area with my family and we are a family that loves to find the best food when we travel. Thanks to an article in the Orange Country Register about restaurants in Playa, I heard about La Marea and after seeing the menu, we immediately altered our next evening’s plans and made a reservation! First off, the Viceroy, where La Marea is, is not some major Playa resort that you can find easily. It is tucked away and even our cab driver didn’t know where it was! Upon arrival, we were escorted through the jungle walkways of the Viceroy until it opened up to their pool area with a view of the ocean and La Marea was just there next to the pool with a view of the ocean as well, as the dining area is built up one level from the ground. Our server Caesar was warm and inviting and a true professional the whole evening. Unfortunately, our Spanish isn’t great. We can talk food just fine in Spanish but beyond that, not so great. However, Caesar’s English was great, so we were very thankful because with any fine dining experience, you’ll always converse with the staff more than normal because the entire experience is elevated not just the food.
On to the food. Everything we ordered was excellent and beautifully plated. We started with & shared the tlayuda & the corn smut risotto. For our mains we had the lamb barbacoa, the shrimp, the zarandeado style fish and the catch of the day mextlapique, served with fresh hand made yellow and blue corn tortillas, it was an excellent meal! Only complaint was with the catch of the day, that perhaps the fish got lost in the dish. The flavors were excellent but with a catch of the day you want the fish to be noticed more. Our drinks were all super tasty as well.
All in all, if you’re looking for fine dining & delicious food while in the Playa del Carmen area, I highly recommend visiting La Marea! It’s well worth the price & journey to find it! We will definitely consider going back next time we’re in the area!

Everything was really beautiful and delicious. We are so glad we took the time to find La Marea. My “fish of the day” was amazing, a different taste with every bite. I would definitely go back. It looks black only because of the delicious sauce. :)
