You can't hear much because of the constant planes trying to land in the airport nearby (if you are dining outside). I docked off stars in the ambient section for that reason.
Some of our dishes- the shareables- were delicious; however I didn't like our main course (the king salmon). The salmon was on top of a soup that was called chowder but all I could taste was the bitterness from the parsnip and the chunks of mushroom. However that was just my preference. I did dock off stars for value because I was expecting more from a main dish that can be labeled as quite expensive.
Overall I would come back; ask for indoor dining and avoid the king salmon dish.
Highly recommend! The staff is super sweet, attentive, and knowledgeable and the food is spectacular (especially for the price point).
Food was expensive and disappointing. Will try again after COVID.
Juniper and Ivy is one of our favorite spots whenever we’re in San Diego and this time did not disappoint! Service was amazing, food spectacular and even though we sat outside (with our pup) the ambiance was great as well. We’ll definitely be back soon!
Our first time here and everything was great! Nicole was fantastic!
Had a very nice anniversary dinner. Food and service was great.
Food is great but paying that kind of check sitting in an alley during Covid is not worth it.
This was my first visit to Juniper and Ivy. Due to the virus, we ate outdoors, which was pleasant and quiet. The food was a mixed bag. The two small dishes we tried were very good (Asian pear and sweet potato). Turns out we would have done better just to eat those. The main dishes were varied. The salmon was excellent, but the vegan vegetable mix (not listed on the menu) was unusual and ultimately too much of a melange of flavors to really make a strong statement. For dessert we tried the persimmon tiramisu. Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts, and I've tried it many places. I have to say this was the worst I've ever had. The base was lady fingers soaked in rum, but then there was a single layer of pureed persimmon and some whipped cream. No multi-layers, no mascarpone cheese filling. Very disappointing. To top it all off I found the pricing very high. Good portions on the entrees, but too expensive overall. I wouldn't go back.
This was my second time at Juniper and Ivy and it was as delicious this time around as it was last time around. Different menu but oh my gosh the food was amazing, the service was amazing, my fiancé and I do not drink and I put down that we were celebrating her 11 year sobriety birthday and they made it a point from the hostess to the waiter to the bus boys etc. to not only congratulate her also our menus said congratulations; they did not ask at all about alcohol or any drinks or give us a drink menu. They went so far above and beyond it was amazing, that is customer service and you can’t go wrong with Chef Blaise, the food was incredible!
Amazing food and an enchanting outdoor patio area! They made it very special for my birthday with a message on the menu just for me and a birthday dessert. Loved it!
calming outdoor dining restaurant with occasional planes flying by because it’s close to the airport. the service was amazing and the food was interestingly tasty. their menu changes so you never really know what you’re going to get to try.
The food is exquisite. The service is exemplary. Top 10 favorite.
The service was exceptional. The various snacks and small plates that we ordered were exceptional – creative, flavorful, inventive. We likely could’ve ordered multiple items of each one and made a meal of it! The plates/entrées were good, but didn’t knock my socks off I’m afraid. I still think the place is to five star I just was a little bit disappointed they weren’t as incredible as the first two courses. Again one person‘s opinion is just one person‘s opinion I think the place is still stellar.
Great wine list, wonderful changing menu, all star service
I’m 58, a retired chef and caterer. From the bay area. In my opinion Juniper and Ivy is trying to hard. I’ve seen this before. Food is over prepared or over manipulated so that what you’re ordering whether it be Burrata or brussels sprouts or sweet breads is lost. I think it would be nice if what you ordered were featured for its very flavor and freshness, not covered up with sauces or chopped into oblivion so you don’t know what you’re eating. Everything tasted fine but there was too much effort put into making it Oh-so special and trendy. The duck fat Madelines, though not really tasting of duck fat and a little over done we’re out of sight with a wonderfully rich pot of duck liver pate and fig jam. The buttermilk biscuit which in the menu suggested they ran out every night was nothing more than Krusteaz pancake mix with buttermilk. Still very good but was crying out for some butter but apparently was deemed too special to come with it on the plate. The server was very kind to bring us some. The persimmon and Burrata was also tasty though a small amount of rather tough Burrata was hidden somewhere in the middle of the dish. A little bit of nice toasted baguette would have been a welcome addition. My sweet bread dish (a bit texturally like Cajun crawfish popcorn) could have been chicken bits for all I could tell because of all of the breading and the overpowering Tsao’s sweet sauce. Tho OK, again I think the dish should be presented for sweet bread lovers rather than served as a dish for people timid about sweet breads. The dishes were washed down with fine New Zealand Sauvignon and a nice hazy IPA. I was surprised at how limited the beer selection was in the heart of an outstanding beer brewing community And was rather indignant to find out that the beer served in a sub pint size glass was costing me $12. All in all the meal was fine and I think this is a great place for a crowd younger and trendier than I.
I was very surprised and loved everythig about the environment and setup of the tables. Excellent ambiance!!
Worst service I’ve experienced to date at Juniper! We got our drink order taken immediately (by a hostess?) and delivered but waited about 10-15 minutes before our server Saul came by and even introduced himself. Another 10-15 min wait before we had to flag down another server to put in our food order (whose table got seated after us but had a more attentive server...).
Food was good as usual but for that price point, service should be as well.
poor service, did not follow our requests on the temperature of the meat. infrequent check. did not offer coffee, forgot ice tea...
Nice place our server Emily was very attentive and pleasant. The food was great
fantastic, attentive service. well informed and helpful staff.
Would not recommend
I understand why this place is on all the lists of best places to eat. The food was amazing and everyone we interacted with was amazing.
It was hard to hear our server through his mask with the music so loud. But that isn’t a huge issue.
Visited Juniper & Ivy for the first time for dinner on a weekend. We sat outside in their beautifully decorated space right outside the front entrance. We were very impressed from the moment we sat down to the minute we left. The ambiance is romantic, our server was incredibly sweet and the food is outstanding. Love how the chef staggers presenting each dish to the guests. We ordered and would recommend: Housemade Soda with vodka, delicious bottle of wine, Spicy Tuna Handroll (my personal favorite), Buttermilk Biscuits, Yellowtail Tostada, Rockfish Crudo, Beef Carpaccio, Persimmon & Burrata, and the Stroganoff. Home run dinner experience. We have already recommended this restaurant to friends and will definitely be back!
We had the best dinner. Our server, Bobby was so knowledgeable and passionate about the food he was describing. We will definitely be back!
We booked an outside table, especially because of the pandemic, and we were seated inside at a bar table which was way too small for dinner. The service wasn't that attentive, and it took a long time to order. Food was very good. We ordered a bunch of smaller plates, and unfortunately all of them ended up being very sweet - but wonderfully prepared. The wine list seemed great with a lot of varietals, but there were virtually no bottles under $75, and very few under $100. Overall, just kind of a mediocre experience. Understandably, restaurants are struggling, but I can't see myself going back here.
My husband and I celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary at Juniper that was a nice touch.
We were so impressed with how lovely the ambiance outside was. They didn't just throw some cheap tables and chairs outside like other restaurants. There is market lighting, live trees, faux boxwood hedge backdrops, graffiti art, and an overall sense of fine, modern dining.
Our server, Curt, was AMAZING! He was really nice and very knowledgeable about the menu; food and drinks, alike. He was the perfect balance of checking in on us to see if we needed anything while chatting a bit in a natural way and giving us plenty of alone time to enjoy a rare night out.
We've been skeptical going out to eat during the pandemic because my husband is borderline high-risk. Not once did we feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or uncertain. This peace of mind coupled with amazing food and service makes me want to give Juniper & Ivy 10 stars!
Megan was a perfect server for our dining experience! Will be coming back soon with a bigger group!
Fantastic Menu and Service. Great place to go out and share a special event with friends. Would highly recommend.
Amazing time. Great service and food
Delicious food. Ordered many plates so our party could try the different items.
We had an amazing experience at Juniper & Ivy and we will definitely be back!! Our service was excellent and the outdoor seating was very nicely done!
Amazing food and ambience!
Wish the tables were a little bit more spread out inside.
My husband and I were celebrating my birthday, and a rare occasion of just having a date night (as parents of young kids!). The service was amazing, probably the best service of any restaurant I’ve experienced here in San Diego. I have a severe food allergy, and the staff and chefs took great care to make sure there wasn’t cross contamination (an issue I’ve had at other restaurants). Amazing recommendations by the staff, and really unique, delicious small plates and desserts! Covid precautions were taken seriously by the restaurant. Overall, a spectacular night. So happy we chose to come here to celebrate!
So nice to be back in the dining room. Can’t wait for the chef’s counter to open. Spicy tuna hand roll, duck liver madeleines, pork and prawn rigatoni and longganisa sausage were all outstanding. The black quinoa with the sausage was my wife’s favorite. To be fair we did not love the carpaccio or the girl and dug potatoes. My wife thought the chocolate fudge dessert was the best chocolate creation she’s ever had. The pork and prawn rigatoni was top 3 on my lifetime pasta list. Well done chef Wells!!
The sound of the overhead planes taking off was very loud and we had to pause the conversation frequently. Some of the dishes were really good but my main dish the salmon really was not very good and the piece was small and overcooked. The waitress was nice the chairs were fairly comfortable. But I was disappointed because I know it had a Michelin star and they have definitely downgraded the menu to what’s called “comfort food “the chicken was the best thing moist and crisp. And the starters were all good.
Great service, awesome food. Everyone was very friendly. The food was beautiful and flavorful. Would definitely go back to try other selections.
We love Sage!
Food was amazing, other than waiting quite a bit when we initially set down, they did make it up and service was great going forward. Foodnwas amazing and drinks
Good food, but the menu changes every season. The first time i went, I liked the menu items much better. This time i went we mostly had a tapas style dinner with all appetizers and we enjoyed that a lot
