Juniper & Ivy
Among the most expensive restaurants in SD. Lots of unique and creative dishes, but they didn’t deliver gastronomically.
Don’t miss this place if you are in San Diego! We basically order most of the small plates and we were so impressed with the outstanding taste and flavor combination! We got so busy eating forgot to take pictures! Although the menu changes constantly but if still on menu order the persimmon salad and the ribs! Order everything, you won’t be disappointed! Marvelous place 😃
What an incredible experience for my birthday dinner! This menu brings some of the most simple base ingredients (squash, oysters, etc.) and transforms them into dishes with the most complex and incredible flavours, a number of them with touches of molecular gastronomy. My family and I shared a number of dishes between us, and enjoyed each thoroughly. The staff were very attentive, friendly and unpretentious, and their sommelier was more than just an expert on his wines, he had deep, in depth knowledge of their regions, and stories behind the bottles. They change their menu very regularly, so I could see myself coming back again and again. Such a magnificent gem in San Diego!
Romantic and more of an experience
Since the weather was colder than usual called and changed to inside table the day before we were going. When we got there we were told they still had us for outside seating and could put us at a high top at the bar. My husband a little irate asked for the manager who proceeded to take us to a great table. Reception a little arrogant but otherwise all other staff attentive and pleasant. Food great. Will be back!
This was my second time dining at the restaurant and it’s been excellent both times. We favor ordering small plates to share so we can taste multiple dishes, and not one disappointed. We especially enjoyed the persimmon salad and butternut squash pasta. Highly recommend.
Our favorite place in town. Food is always outstanding! Their Roasted Duck tonite was very tasty and the meat is very tender and was cooked to perfection! A different take on Duck that myself and my family enjoyed. The Fries done Animal style are really good along with their Burger. Definitely out #1 Resto in town. We will be back. 👍👍
The food, the service and the atmosphere are incredible. It is a very special place and it created a great memory for my friend and I. It was her birthday and we were completely spoiled the entire time.
Thank you for such an incredible experience.
Fabulous service and fabulous food!
Food is remarkable-unlike anything you would in a similarly priced location.
Food was outstanding...beef cheeks, “corn dogs”, peanut butter liver mousse, pumpkin torte!!!!!! Service was attentive and relaxed allowing for great conversations...we will return on our next visits to San Diego.
Great restaurant...poor selection of wines under $100 per bottle
Excellent food, service, and ambience!
Wife’s birthday plus our anniversary. Pampered us to the fullest. Could not be more impressed.
Phenomenal EVERYTHING!! Matt was wonderful and coursed our meal out perfectly. The menu was incredible and the special addition of the lamb dumplings was a welcome surprise!! The desserts were out of this world. The yodel as usual was delicious and the hazelnut mousse and house made brownie with the tuile cookies blew me away!!
This was overall an amazing place. Service. Portion size. Quality of food . Cleanliness. Overall perfect experience. I will definitely be coming back.
Juniper & Ivy is a beautiful restaurant, with a comfortable bar and a beautiful wine rack system. The menu is creative and exciting.
Nick, the sommelier, was friendly, informative, and knowledgeable about wines. I truly appreciated his input.
The service was attentive and professional.
My only complaint was the noise level. The restaurant space is large and adding a certain genre of music does not help with the noise. My suggestion is play subtle genre of music.
I would highly recommend Juniper & Ivy.
Wonderful, creative food. Don't skip the duck. One of the best I've had. Allow your waiter to guide you and your food combination will be fabulous.
All show and no go!
I was so excited as there was so much going on.... so many professional looking chefs and many kind servers and hosts everywhere.
Unfortunately, the food was shockingly bad. We had the a rice ball tiny bite and the squash blossom. Nothing special about those at all. The were one note bland bites with lack luster sauces.
For our entree my husband had the dry aged steak and I had the stroganoff.
The steak was very tough and flavorless (so disappointing!) the cheesy potatoes were decent.
My stroganoff was a disgusting mess.
The pasta was a grey brown color and there was absolutely no pork to be found. The sauce was flavorless and very boring. Overall the dish was sloppy and very unappealing to the eye and the tongue.
I will not be visiting this restaurant ever again.
What a treat! I came to Juniper & Ivy as a solo diner and the menu was perfect with its bites and small plates. A flavorful mix of rich, creamy, tart, sweet. Service was excellent and I sat at the counter with a view of the kitchen. Highly recommend!
Great food and service. A fun dining experience, lovely wine menu.
Wonderful restaurant, and in a good location in the city. If we'd been able to get a reservation on short notice, we'd have gone a second time during our stay in San Diego. Highly suggest the cocktails, probably in preference to the wines. Also, be mindful of the sweetness of what you're ordering. We had a couple items come out as small plates that would've really been better suited as dessert. That was really the only miscue, though.
Great service and ambiance. We ordered many small plates and shared. Food was good overall, one dish was bland so we didn’t eat it. I guess I expect to be blown away by the food when a restaurant is this expensive. We did have a great time though!
Hosted a dinner for colleagues this past week. While I have high expectations for restaurants-one area that I expect to be excellent is: Service. We were taken care of by Lauren K and she met and exceeded my expectations. I travel quite a bit for work and have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the US. What I appreciated about Lauren was her interest in my guests experience and her attentive but non-intrusive style. Since I didn't want my guests to have to learn the menu, I asked Lauren to just take care of the food for us and she was happy to accommodate-including picking the wine pairings. We got a nice sampling of the menu and the wine choices were spot on. The food was excellent and the next day I was still getting comments on the evening from my guests. Really great that they loved the food and the experience. This was my third or fourth time to Juniper and Ivy, and thanks to Lauren (and of course the Chef) we will be back!
It was all very good, but none of it was outstanding. Everything was either a little too sweet or a little too heavy. Ate solo at the counter: biscuit with jam tasted like a muffin and wanted butter, not jam; persimmon salad with buratta was amazing if only there weren’t persimmon jam on the bottom of the plate; pork stroganoff needed acid... Wines by the glass were good.
I loved the food here. Everything was fantastic in terms of taste and presentation. The drinks were well crafted and the atmosphere was both classy and upscale, as well as lively and casual.
The bill certainly shows the level of care that goes into everything here, but all things considered it was not an overwhelming expense. If you have a special occasion or get together I would highly recommend doing it here.
I loved it. My wife, who is Korean, is very picky when eating “Western” food. She loved it too and said it was the best American food she’d ever had. We had a meal of all small plates and our server arranged the order on the fly and ensured they’d arrive one at a time, giving us in essence our own tasting meal. We’re from out of town but would definitely go back.
Some of the best food I've ever had! You HAVE TO get the corn dogs while you're here, and the Upside Down Apple Cake is TO DIE FOR! Everything was so great. Definitely recommend, and will definitely be back!
Sage is the best server! My husband and I loved her - she made our experience memorable and delicious. This is a very special place. We can’t wait to come back.
Upon making a reservation I wrote “normal dining area please” for a 530 pm reservation. We get seated in an non normal dining area, aka the bar area, upstairs. We kindly asked if we could sit downstairs in the normal dining area, as mentioned on the reservation and hostess states that’s another 30 min wait. The end.
This restaurant is just lovely. The decor and the ambient music was just the right level. My only complaint
Plaint is that our reservation was at 9:30 and we were not seated until 9:50. We we’re starving in anticipation of our meal so this was a bit disappointing especially since the restaurant has a strict policy y on being late for a reservation. The service was absolutely amazing and made up for the reservation issue. Christie(sp?) helped us curate an absolutely exquisite meal. She was personable, courteous, and very knowledgeable about the menu. She was also very attentive. We had the mushroom and Swiss Madeline and the chorizo corn dogs for our first bites which were both very creative. The madelines were a bit too sweet I love madelines as a rule but I was excited to taste a savory preparation. I missed the mushroom and Swiss flavor and was just hit with sweet . We then had the pork belly and yellow fin for starters and the beef cheeks/ny strip for entrees. Everything was delicious. The beef cheek was tender and flavorful and the fingerling potatoes paired with the strip steak were delectable. We finished off with the sole cage with vanilla ice cream, dulce caramel custard and oats for dessert. My gosh this was really good. We typically don’t have dessert with dinner but this was absolutely worth a splurge. Thank you for such a lovely meal. We’ll be back
Sat at the dessert station and had the best time with the staff!
Three words: bone marrow ranch. That is, bone marrow ranch drenching each succulent slice of the medium rare New York strip steak that I devoured last Saturday night! My party of four was seated a little after our 7:30pm reservation. I was actually surprised we got seated that fast because the restaurant was packed! You have to try the Day Drinking with the In-Laws cocktail which is a citrusy, vodka-based thirst quencher! Definitely order several of the small plates and share and if you have any question about whether or not you will have enough food, do like we did and order an entrée to share at the end. Pork belly, corn dog bite, spicy tuna handroll, short rib arancini, and everything else we ate was soooo good with complex flavors that just seem to work together! Highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.
First time visit. We had some great dishes and and some mediocre ones. Will come back for the favorites. Great atmosphere and service.
Hostesses not very friendly. Then any of the fried food was greasy suggesting oil not hot enough. The specialty cocktails (and we tried 6 out of 8) were odd and not very tasty but obviously we kept trying. A couple of amazing dishes and the rest were meh. My group was very disappointed as we had high hopes.
Juniper and Ivy is a gem! The food, service and atmosphere was outstanding!! From the cocktails all the way to dessert we were in awe by the depth of flavor with everything! Highly recommend!
I had heard great things about Juniper & Ivy so I decided to have my birthday dinner here and it did not disappoint! It had a great ambience, amazing food, and every server that came by our table was very nice and attentive. The food menu is very eclectic and so many different options to choose from. We started with some shared plates including the yellowfin tuna, gnocchi, and schnitzel. The schnitzel was our favorite! I had the steak as a main and it was delicious - came with lots of potatoes too. Definitely coming back here!
Excellent food and attentive service. There was an excellent selection of unique small plate items. It was a very enjoyable dining experience and I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Always delivers. Excellent service by our waiter. My only negative take is I felt rushed and they wanted to flip the table.
