Il Gabbiano is an Italian Steakhouse brought to the historical waterfront district and neighborhood of the city of New Haven, Connecticut by Chef Valentino Stakaj owner of the city's iconic Adriana's on Grand Avenue and La Lupa in North Haven, Valentino has rebuilt the famous restaurant location at 501 Long Wharf Drive which overlooks the Long Island Sound. Monday to Sunday happy hour from 2-6pm drink and appetizer specials every day.

    Terrible night last saturday, 6 people and it took 3 hours, 2 were kids and as we werent in a rush but 3 hours is exhausting waiter was overwhelmed Mirel and could not handle his tables, he was not given any help, we has discussed apps and agreed on our order and Mirel talked us out of one item (which I wanted to have) the apps werent enough. Then we were all talking and had food wrapped up and i looked for my sons and couldnt find it (Him and i were interested in 2 dishes so we each ate half and he enjoyed mine more and was looking forward to eating it the next day) I asked the waiter where is left overs were and he said that my son said he was all set. SMH we all wrapped up to go and he throws his away who was looking forward to it - food was excellent. Then after 40 minutes our dessert shows up (3 food runners auctioned off 4 desserts chaotically) and we got our bill with no adjustments. I asked the waiter what he was going to do about the food he threw away and he had the Gaul to ask me if I wanted a salad or some chicken(he threw away sausage and pasta) and I was infuriated and we left. I called the next day and was told I can pick up an order and pay if I liked. I requested the owner Valentino to call and he didnt. I called again the next day and he laughed at me and said it didnt happen, that I was wrong, I only wanted what I paid for I didnt throw it away - he then said after laughing snarkily that if i came in he would be a very large order for free while trying to rush me off the phone and saying it as i was trying to get something for "free". It was a $25 dish I had no problem with the price I I have been a restaurant owner myself for 30 years and the service and management/ownership is the worst I have ever seen, I have so many friends in the industry and would you their shirts off their backs, Valentino will take yours instead.

    We ordered a number of appetizers and they were all amazing. The portions were huge, so don’t over order! We had the seafood salad, the octopus salad, the arrichini balls, meatballs, and the squash blossoms. Recommend them all they were all delicious. Service was awesome. We sat out by the water and had a wonderful time. Recommend trying this restaurant or going back if you’ve been before.

    September 2024 Went last night. 1) Thumping club music drowned out conversation - zero ambiance 2) 3 chipped corners on my plate - sums up attention to detail, chips on appetizer plates. Red flag. 3) Tables so small nothing fit 4) Battleship gray paint on cement floors, walls. 5) Food - excellent! 6) No Italian serves MASHED POTATOES w veal parm! 7) Generous portions, and very good. 8) Bathroom - very clean but you could see the "old" under the new. 9) Hostess station dreadful leaving, older woman did not say "thank you..." yet young woman w long curls excellent upon arrival! The chef is terrific. Ambiance & front of house mezza mezz.. No need to go back.

    Absolutely fantastic! Food is out of this world with a gorgeous water view. Service couldn't be better. I highly suggest the squash flower appetizer. Can't wait to go back

    We went on a Thursday, which is Ladies night. (Great value) Excellent menu choices, terrific service, and delicious food. I had the sea bass, which didn't disappoint. The eggplant rollatini is my favorite thing on the menu. I actually went to Il Gabbiano twice that week. Ladies night, and also for my daughter's birthday dinner. I really love it!!

    The musician was good quality, though too loud for our table, which was very close to the speakers. It was quite unpleasant before we spoke up. I do not understand the overabundant size of the portions. Each dish, appetizer, salad and entree was large enough for two full portions. Quality of the food and service was excellent.

    We had a 7:30 reservation for a birthday celebration and got seated right away. We were brought over bread and olives almost immediately but that was it. Nobody came by and finally at 8 :00 we got up and left.  We told the hostess when we were leaving what happened. She was more worried about how it happened than trying to take care of us. She should’ve asked us to stay and said have a drink on us or an appetizer. Instead she apologized and told us to have a good night. This was our fourth time there and we’ve always had good service. Not sure what happened tonight.

     The ambience is great, large portions of very delicious food expect to have to go containers. The owner Valentino takes pride and all his restaurants.
