Hank's Oyster Bar - Alexandria
I brought my girlfriend and my godson and his girlfriend from Texas / great dinner and conversation. The restaurant created a nice environment for our great evening to occur.
Not just oysters! Their seafood is always amazing, well prepared. I keep going back to the seafood mixed grill - probably my most favorite thing on the menu! And filling enough that I never need a starter with it. I always appreciate the dark chocolate they bring at the end of the meal. Would appreciate more domestic wines by the glass.
The food was excellent but the service indifferent.
The place is way too noisy for a nice dinner. There were 3 of us & we had to shout i/o talking to each other. The food was excellent & so was service, but the noise took away from it. We were in the very back, maybe next time we’ll try sitting in the front, maybe it won’t be so loud.
Bartender was a little snooty. I was sat at a table where every passerby bumped my chair to the point where my date made a comment about it.
The oyster's were excellent. Something about the lobster bisque and the seafood ceviche was underwhelming. Nothing was necessarily bad, but nothing really blew my socks off. This is the first time in multiple visits where I left underwhelmed. I'm sure it was a one off thing.
FIRST it was very loud, small tables, seafood had very little taste, under seasoned for the price of the meal and the porsion size given price, was to high and they need to have a menu with a larger selection of meals. Will not be going to Hanks any time soon. Was disappointed. J.F.M.
Good service - excellent oysters at reasonable happy hour price - wife had trout dinner that she raved about - son liked fried oyster dinner and loved his bloody mary - my flat iron steak was okay - I would go back but like most places, knowing what to order for your personal tastes is important.
A great lunch, excellent friendly service and the best fish & chips in Old Town!!
Delicious food and drinks, great service!
We've dined at Hank's several times in the last year. The food is uniformly delicious. This past weekend, I especially enjoyed the Oysters Rockefeller. The oysters were large, hot, and nicely seasoned. The "spinach" topping was watercress, a lovely twist to a terrific starter. Several of us also loved the crab cakes, which were lightly sautéed and delicately seasoned. Another member of our party, a trout fisherman, also enjoyed the trout entrée, which he noted was misidentified on the menu. Although the variety on his plate was not as advertised, he said he was still pleased with his dinner. The biggest downside, as far as I can see, is the noise level. Our neighbors included a party of about 10 Millennials enjoying drinks and hors d'oeuvres, and a pair of hefty men bellowing conversation to each other that could be heard above the drinks party. We did not begin to enjoy our meal until those folks departed.
We had a wonderful dinner at Hank's. The food, service and ambiance were great. My family loved the oysters, and I had and a delicious bowl of mussels. We all agreed that we will definitely go there again .
Food is delicious, however, portions are small and very pricey. Atmosphere is“so so”...nothing special. We keep going back for the seafood. It’s cooked to perfection.
We really enjoy the quality oysters at Hanks and the fresh seafood. The service was excellent. We were stuck on the beltway behind a burning bus and were late for our reservation. We notified Hank's and they were able to seat us when we arrived.
Love the place, service was running behind and had to wait about 20 mins past our reservation time for our table.
The buttermilk onion rings are to die for.... Oyster are the main draw and are excellent! Best fried oysters in the area.
Hank’s Oyster Bar - Alexandria has not failed to impress me with their service and food.
Ordered the flat iron steak and the portion was so small, a two year old would have been still hungry. My sides were Mac and Cheese ( a tablespoon portion ) and Collard Greens ( under cooked, too much vinegar) but the portion was larger than the steak and Mac and Cheese combined. Will never waste my money ever again and definitely will not encourage anyone to go there
Loved the lobster bisque! Sat at the bar and had a nice convo with Tom. Helped me pick out which oysters to try (which were delicious) and gave me some great dinner recommendations to try in the area. Will definitely be back!
We were welcomed right away as we arrived and were sitting at our table within a few minutes. Our waiter was friendly and informative. The food was excellent and we really appreciated the small serving of chocolate that we received at the end of dinner. The perfect way to end a great meal!
First time dining at Hanks Oyster Bar in Alexandria. I've previously dined at the Wharf location, so had an idea ofwhat to expect. The raw oysters and oyster poorboy was outstanding! My wife chose some non-seafood items from the menu and her food was great also! Our waiter was excellent. Highly recommend!
We really enjoyed the variety of oysters we tried and our server was very helpful in describing the differences in taste and region. The food was fresh and the service was outstanding.
The Bloody Marys were excellent, the service was not bad (Jeremy was nice) the food I cannot comment on SINCE IT NEVER ARRIVED. How hard can it be to make crabcake eggs benedict? But it never showed up; finally paid the tab and moved on after waiting an hour. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Best bartenders in Old Town, all have been there for years, and make this Hanks the locals favorite and standout among all Hanks restaurants. Tim, Miriam, and Alex make it worth eating at the bar instead of a table.
The food and service here is always consistently good. The sound carries in this place, so it can be a bit noisy at times. The restaurant is a great combo of casual atmosphere with fine dining. Unfortunately, this locations layout is not friendly for anyone with mobility concerns.
Food was very good. Reasonably priced. Nice ambiance and clean. Super-friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful waiter. I had the beet salad with shrimp, my colleague had the veggie sandwich with onion rings, and our 3rd had an assortment of oysters on the half shell selected by our waiter and a caesar salad. We all enjoyed our meals. Very nice place.
We met a colleague there for a dinner. The location is very convenient when walking from the metro and from area hotels. We waited in the bar until our table was ready.
We received prompt service and great food and wine.
Very positive experience.
We ended up being the last people in the restaurant on a Sunday and were not made to feel rushed.
Back from a trip
We loved the food at Hank's and had it not been for the noise level, we would have rated it outstanding. We really had to raise our voices to be heard by the couple sitting opposite from us. It got better as the evening progressed and the noisy customers left. There was a miscommunication about our reservation and our table was not ready when we arrived at 7:00. The hostess apologized profusely and scared up a table within 10 minutes of our arrival. Our waiter REALLY earned his tip by checking on us frequently, taking our order soon after we were seated. and being entertaining, all at the same time. We were probably the oldest customers, except for one other cane-gripping lady. So I feel we got excellent service.
Thé food at Hanks is consistently very good and often creative and with good ingredients. The service is friendly and usually attentive. The issue is always about noise - if we dine there will I be able to hold a conversation with my friends? Lunch works better because at dinner the answer is too often that I cannot hear anything above the roar.
The food is off the hook!! Order the scallops....YUM!
I had a beautiful time, our server was wonderful. The food was exquisite :)
Service was slow but it appeared that was because of one waitress just standing and talking to a friend. Usually their service is outstanding.
First time visiting this Hanks. Just what we'd expect for Old Town - space challenged, but it works. All in all, we felt very rushed, but the food was pretty good. Shrimp were smaller than expected; so were the oysters. Cocktails sauce was great. Two of our party had large platters - trout and mahi mahi. Excellent. Crab cakes and po'boy were good, as well. The arugula salad was excellent. Love the chocolate chunks at the end (and the key lime pie was excellent).
We have had 4 great dinners at Hanks and will be back again soon. We have also told several friends about hanks and they have been and had similar experiences. The service is very attentive but not over bearing. The staff is very friendly and the Atmosphere is awesome.
Delicious fresh oysters and seafood.
Was seated as soon as we arrived. Service was great. Carlos was excellent. Had an issue with one of our orders and the manager was courteous and quick to resolve the matter. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience and will return.
The food at this location is good and the service was very good. The main reason for the lower rating for the ambiance is that the dining area was about half empty when we arrived and yet they seated us at a very undesirable table right next to the kitchen door and servers were walking back and forth right behind us throughout our meal. In my opinion they simply should not have a table in that spot. It took away from the experience.
We were visiting Washington and invited our daughter and her partner to have dinner with us. Everything was perfect. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding.
Went twice on our trip ! Great oysters and small plates. Both our servers were excellent.
