Hamrock's Restaurant (fka Choices by Shawn)
Overall we had a very nice time for dinner here. I had read some reviews about service and food, and was a little concerned because we had never been here before, but overall it was a lovely place. Is it a Michelin star place? well no, but we had a 3-course dinner for under $100 (2 people including tax and tip) with decent food and personable service. The desserts were especially memorable in terms of food. Yes there were slight waits for things, and yes we had to ask for salt/pepper/sugar etc that one would normally expect to be on the table, but everyone was friendly and helpful when we asked. The place itself is a quirky & charming house converted into a restaurant, so some table placements are unique, but this is the type of place you go if you want quirk & charm. Note: While I know it is not their fault, they only have a license for beer/wine. No full bar, which was kind of a bummer.
Hamrock's food is excellent, but my dining companion and I experienced a bad service night on our last visit. The restaurant was quite crowded on a Tuesday evening, but there were only TWO servers for the entire restaurant! Service was abysmally slow, but our meal was quite good. The bread basket to start has an unusual assortment - all good. The brussel sprouts were crispy and just a little spicy. Scallops with vegetables and crispy polenta were superb - one of the best scallop dishes I've had. The decadent chocolate cake is quite rich - very definitely shareable.
Our server was pleasant and apologized for the slow service. She even comped 50% of our entire meal! I will go back again, and hope that management will do a better job of staffing the restaurant.
A warm and friendly restaurant. Excellent service and good value.
This place is consistently amazing on the quality and taste of the food. I am a discriminating foodie and chef from NOLA, and Hamrock's is the place to go for great food in Fairfax, VA. The food at Hamrock's, as well as the service, is outstanding. Bar none, this is the best place to dine in Fairfax, VA.
Slow service as restaurant wasn't busy. Food just okay for a $50 dollar lunch
We went for lunch on a beautiful day and sat outside on the patio. They had a Restaurant Week menu which was delicious and very reasonable.
Hamrock's is one of our favorites. We are never disappointed.
My wife and a friend had lunch and were delighted with the service, friendly staff, and of course the great menu to choose from. They spent most of the afternoon enjoying the atmosphere and conversations.
We will be back.
This was my first time here. And it most likely will be the last. It has a charming interior, small, and the tables are very close together, but it’s quaint. I was there with a friend for brunch. My rice crispy French toast was barely warm when I got it and the inside was mushy and not cooked. I requested sausage with it and was served bacon. The “fresh fruit” even had some brown spots on the honey dew. My friend ordered poached eggs with potato pancakes and fresh fruit. The portion size was very small and the same went with her fruit… Sour, hard, and turning brown. Our waiter was less than attentive. Our brunch entrées were 14.95 each… Not horribly expensive but mediocre and small portions. Not good for the value .
Great place for brunch, food was excellent, great service and very reasonably priced. Will definitely come again.
Hamrock’s never disappoints. A big thank you to the staff for making my wife’s birthday so special! They kept a gift I dropped off the evening before and brought it out for my wife with her cake. She was so surprised!
The cozy interior was inviting and the food was excellent as always. Thank you again Hamrock’s!
My mom sister and I all had a fabulous time with our friends and the food at Hamrocks was so delicious it made everything even better.
The food and service we're outstanding! As a result of an old menu, the staff corrected the issue with a complimentary menu item and were extremely accommodating.
Artful presentation. All six in neighbor hood luncheon group really enjoyed there meal off the Fairfax City Restaurant week. Our server, Candice, did a love job taking care of all our needs. This facility is not handicap assailable as it is in a charming historic building but does have a better enter and exit that you need to ask about. Well worth the effort.
Great menu and great value for restaurant week. The shrimp and crab tostadas were awesome as were the crab cakes. The service is wonderful. It's a great place for a date.
We went for Fairfax restaurant week I enjoyed our time. We had amazing food. I would have preferred if they had more dining areas open so that we didn’t have to sit so close to other diners and hear their (inane) conversation.
Good as always.
Another great experience! Sebastian was awesome. My guest were again very pleased as was I! Will be back and also recommended/suggested the restaurant to friends and clients! Thanks again
We have driven by this place and didn't realize it was a restaurant! When searching for a brunch place to go to, Hamrock's popped up as a choice. After reading the menu we decided to try it out. We are so glad we did. Charming "little" place feel, but not so little once you look around. In an historic house, there is great character to the restaurant. Looks like fun to be had in the summer sitting on the porch for cocktails and eats.
Luckily for us we happened to visit during restaurant week, so we had a special brunch menu to choose from. Three course deal or we could order from the brunch or lunch menu. We all four chose from the special menu.
Crab and Artichoke Chowder and salad, each chosen by two of us. Both were excellent and appropriately sized for a starter course. The Chowder was thick and loaded with crab and potatoes, with a rich tomato based broth. Salad lightly dressed with shavings of parmesan.
Main course, two Eggs Benedict on croissant, one waffle and bacon and one salmon with basmati rice and glazed carrots. The waffle was tender and tasty the bacon not too crispy! The Eggs Benedict, perfect sauce, perfectly poached eggs. The salmon, perfectly cooked, not dry. Glazed carrots were tender and not overcooked.very yummy.
Dessert was a choice of ice cream or limoncello cake. 3 cake 1 butter pecan ice cream. Ice cream smooth, and full of pecans. Cake nicely lemony with whipped cream. Moist and nicely tart.
We decided this was a place that deserved our attention, and called for visiting for dinner!! All in all, great place. Higher noise level than we like, due to no carpets or drapes offering buffers for the noise.
Great historical venue, amazing food. Some tables in the middle are pushed close together, but you're not on top of the couple next to you. We went for our anniversary, and had a great time!
Immediately greeted upon arrival and seated. Tables were quite close together, we were squeezed into a table in the corner, which was a little uncomfortable for some of our party as they are big guys.
The server was very attentive. The food was very good, will definitely go back and try additional dishes. Will definitely refer others. The outdoor porch area looks very inviting, look forward to going back in nice weather to enjoy that area.
We have dined at Hamrock's a number of times. It is a great night out!
Our waitress was outstanding, really made the lunch special. She packed an extra popover in the doggy bag for my elderly mother to enjoy later. Made my heart melt.
With the exception of myself, it was the first time my friends (3) had been to Hamrock’s — and one even lives within walking distance! It was the first time though for me to eat dinner there; the popovers are AMAZING! We enjoyed a nice meal together, and were so stuffed that we had to skip dessert (next time!).
All of the food was delicious, and the atmosphere quite charming!
Great service. Had the special which was very good.
The food was delicious as always and the portions were perfect. Love the setting and ambiance such a great change from a chain restaurant. The only fault I could possibly find is that our waiter did not come back and check with us so I had to ask another for more water.
Just perfect as always!
Sebastian was awesome! Recommended food which were great. Just the right amount of attention to our group. Much appreciated. Service, food and attendants spot on! Will be back.
It was wonderful. We enjoyed the set up of the restaurant and everyone loved their food. We will definitely be back again.
Tightly packed us in a full room where everyone was trying to talk over each other. Food was okay, server was good.
Too bright, no music playing. Going for quaint, romantic experience with the house converted to restaurant, tables close together, but lacks the ambiance. Faux candles on tables, no music playing, bright, almost florescent, lights on during dinner. Food doesn’t seem homemade. Presentation is nice, but nothing that wows.
The chef at Hamrocks never disappoints us. Wonderful flavors and presentation.
We had a lovely dining experience. We were celebrating a birthday. Both my friend and I enjoyed our meals tremendously. We were very happy that they did not rush us.
Nice spot in FFX I went on Valentine’s Day, it was a bit too busy and crowded but it was on heart day so I get it. Good food and a fair price
Good food and good service especially on a crowded Valentines day
Unfortunately, this was an underwhelming experience. When making a reservation the website did not state that it was a set menu. Ok, not what we would have wanted but we’ll roll with it. We ordered a bottle of wine, which took 10 minutes to arrive. Throughout dinner my Husband had to top off the glass. The server never did. We ordered our three courses. My husband ordered lobster bisque. When it arrived we were both sorely disappointed. It had literally no lobster, not even the little flakes that you expect from cheaper restaurants. It was like a nice tomato soup. We then waited more than 45 minutes for our dinner. The neighboring table who was sat after us received their dinner (they too had appetizers as the first course) before we did. It wasn’t until I asked the server that he even realized it was an issue. Initially he said “yeah we’re real slammed.” They weren’t. Then he came back a few minutes later and stated he had messed up and comped us the bottle of wine. Great, but we’re hungry. We still waited another 15 minutes for our dinner. The dessert came, was enjoyed, and the leftovers were bagged by another server. We waited another 10 minutes for our server to come back around. My husband noticed him sitting at the bar talking with someone and he didn’t come over to us until my husband made eye contact with him. He brought the check and stated, “thanks for not yelling.” Hamrock’s has potential but certainly fell short tonight which is doubly disappointing because not only was it Valentine’s Day but it is also my Husband’s birthday!
The oyster appetizer was disappointing. The tenderloin entree and the lemon cello dessert were terrific.
Very nice dinner. Food was tasty and original and reasonably priced. Wine was very nice. We really enjoyed our Valentine's Day.
Crab cakes Benedict were delicious at brunch. They were filled with lump crab meat and little filler. My only suggestion is that they would be enhanced by less sauce on top and spicier seasoning inside the crsb cake. The accompanying potatoes were perfect and the fresh fruit was ripe and sweet. Other dishes ordered were just average.
The restaurant is lovely. However, the wait staff seems to be unable to keep up with diners in so many different rooms. Service was inattentive. We waited forever for water, following an accidental spill, and it took a very long time both to order our food and for it to arrive. I will give the restaurant one more try.
