Hal's Bar & Grill at Primitivo calificaciones y reseñas
This was my first time at Hal’s and we had such a great experience. I made our Saturday evening reservation for 6 people through Open Table for and requested a quieter table. My experience has been that restaurants typically never read requests, or don’t care enough to follow through. For the first time in my life I received a phone call about my request! A few hours before our reservation, the hostess at Hal’s kindly called me to say she would like to seat us outside because she felt it would be quieter, and then asked if we would be okay with that location, to which I said of course! When we arrived, the hostess said that it was actually noisier outside so she moved us to an inside table. The fact that she cared enough to take the time and evaluate the best table for us is what most restaurants miss, a personal touch.
Having enjoyed the original Hal’s for years, we were sorely disappointed in our recent visit. It took fifteen minutes to be served glasses of wine. We sent back the Cote du Rhône glasses since they tasted like grape juice. Instead, we chose $17 Cabernet glasses that were not of any note. The menu is very limited. Our peaches in the first salad were not ripe. A beet salad was carelessly thrown together with more unripe peaches and had no taste. The burger was served on a soaked bun and sadly prepared. Only the fries were good. The front room is extremely noisy. It used to be a familiar but special place. It’s still pleasant but the food served was of truck stop quality.
This incarnation of Hal's is good, and suffers only in comparison to what went before. Excellent service; fun bar scene of Venice regulars; great French fries; interesting, well priced wines by the glass; good price-to-quality ratio. The menu is very limited, so you have to be in the mood for those things you like (and no more pizza!), but it is still a come-back-and-see-me kind of place!
I didn't think Hal's could be improved after moving from down the street but I was pleasantly surprised. There are several distinct dining areas and a quite patio in the back. The menu is not too big and not to small. There is something to please anyone. Although I didn't have the turkey burger this time, my out of town guest did and said it was the best he had ever eaten. My salmon was cooked perfectly. The roasted heirloom tomatoes on creamy polenta was a real treat.
Waited over 30 minutes for our drinks. They were great. We ordered food early since the service was slow. Food was quick, both burgers we orders were well done vs Medium rare. Just really poor showing.
Apparently this place has a historical following, let them have it and walk down the street.
Visiting the Venice beach area. Had dinner with family. Sat on patio which was so much more quiet than indoors.
Food good. Our server was not good. Very distracted. Never got asked if we wanted dessert and brought an empty folder with no bill inside. It was kind of comical.
We went for a friend's birthday, hadn't been in over 10 years, a little disappointed in the move and the menu, but assured once a new kitchen was built, the menu would return, so we're looking forward to that. Our waiter was good, our Drinks were good, the food was OK, but not what we remembered or expected. Will try again in six months or so.
Hal's used to be good but it seems like the passion has died. Service was horrible, server did not know what soda was in a vodka and soda?? Steak was dry and bland. Hummus had no flavor. Caesar salad was bland. Food was mediocre at best. They need lessons from Evan Funke next door!!!!
Will not be back.
Been a contented Hal's customer for years-- they were on Abbott Kinney before it was 'in'. So glad they're back, same street but a few blocks north. Lovely space including outdoor patio. Very nice food and bar. We had weekend brunch. Had best kale salad I've ever had (emphasis on good instead of go for you), terrific burgers, egg scrambles. Will def return.
We were big fans of the earlier Hal's and had to try our former favorite meal, brunch. Sadly, gone was the amazing basket of tiny muffins and biscuits. However, the food was even better than before. Huevos Rancheros, Huevos Divorcedad, Salmon Benedict and the Salmon Scramble were all delicious. Trevor, our waiter, took excellent care of us. We can't wait to return.
I was a fan of the old location and I like this new place a lot, though there are still a few bumps to be ironed out. The kitchen seems a little overworked as they share space with the restaurant next door. That will soon change, I heard. The outdoor patio had some plastic tarp flapping on us on a windy night so we moved inside but after that everything was fine, the food and service are still great! Constant sports on the TVs has always been a bummer for me but I'm sure I'm in the minority there. Otherwise it's got a nice friendly vibe. Definitely will be there again soon!
Booked online. Walked in and was a gong show with tons of people at the bar drinking. Seemed more like a bar than restaurant. Service was ridiculously slow. Food was below average. Steak didn't even taste like stake. Would not recommend.
Lively bar scene; unfortunately we were there for dinner. Order started off ok except one of us asking for "extra" salad dressing apparently meant "none" to the kitchen. 15 mins later the dressing arrived. Second course- fish requested as "rare" was overdone and rubbery. Yuk! Sent it back. 25 mins later-- still no fish. Cancelled the order. Pass on this one-- there are way too many great options in LA. Sad!
We love Hal's for dinner. The house salad is so interesting, fresh and light. A great start. The burgers are juicy, the marinated flank steak divine. But what makes it an even more special experience is the staff. Luciano and Melissa makes feel like family! Can't wait to try brunch some weekend as well.
Hal's Restaurant is part of the historic, original Venice, and the quality and service has maintained over the years. From the art on the walls to the friendliness of the waiters to the quality of the food, it's a staple of familiarity and comfort. I always love going there.
On my most recent visit to Hal's/Primitivo, my party of three sat outdoors on a lovely warm day in LA. Service was friendly and menu offered a nice selection of salads to choose from. Our meals were delicious!
Restaurant is charming, inside or out!
Their famous chicken was really dry. The wine list was a joke. There was nothing on it and what we ordered, they did not have. What we got was an overpriced bottle of poor wine--they told us later that they were trying to sell out of the old restaurant's wine.
Not great and will not recommend it until they get their standards up, but they are opening the new restaurant soon, so we are hopeful.
