Casual neighborhood restaurant with pleasant patio, consistently good food, and reasonable prices. A fine option instead of the trendy, overpriced, noisy, crowded restaurants on Abbot Kinney. Has been around for many years, and survived the changing neighborhood.
I must confess, I miss the old Hal's, but I must also admit - I dig the new Hal's! They feel like two very different restaurants in terms of lay out and Embiance, however the food is equally delicious. I didn't see the outside but I've heard it's charming and adds a lot of footage to the inside restaurant which is half the size of the old Hals. My burger was DELISH as was my friend's short ribs... I still say you can't go wrong with Hals!
Very good lunch and enjoyed sitting outside
I don't understand why restaurants down the street were mobbed for brunch, and Hal's, just two blocks north, was fairly quiet. The service was, as usual, excellent. Our waiter, whose name I should have noted, was warm and friendly, and gave his opinions when asked. The food was even more beautiful than ever, and delicious as always. Plus, they now have a muffin basket at a reasonable price which, while not the free basket of tiny treats from before this move, was just what we wanted. My cappuccino was perfect, too. The patio was cool and lovely. Our friends had breakfast pizzas, and loved them. Hubs had a frittata and was very happy with it, and I inhaled my huevos rancheros AND the chili rellano that accompanied it.
Trevor was excellent. Restaurant was a little warm.
Just love this place!! Warm and friendly, great food, top service and moderately priced. Don't miss it!
Disappointed that Paella and the Ribeye had recently been removed from the menu, but food was good and Luciano was a great waiter.
This place was OK. It's been there forever and had the disposition of "you're here on a busy weekend so deal with it..." I'd rather find another place where they're happy I've come to their restaurant... Thanks anyway.
We were there on Friday for lunch but were presented with a printed lunch menu from Tuesday with only about 6-8 items. There was a large party outside but we were the only people in the main restaurant. The server was eager to please and we were able to adapt to the short menu. That said, we got part of someone else's order -and- since it was not delivered by our server, did not initially know that it wasn't ours. I asked for my Manhattan to be on the dry side. It wasn't presented dry and I returned it. it came back OK. The food quality was very good. I previously had a very good experience there but it was some time ago. I've been to the new Hal's in Playa Vista and was quite pleased with food, cocktails and service.
Used to love the old Abbot Kinney location, never tried Playa, looked forward to trying the new AK spot. It's not exactly the same as before, but that's fine. I think most will love the patio on a pleasant summer evening. Upon arriving the host, Keanu, gave a cheery hello and warm welcome and quickly showed me round the new place. Within minutes I was glad I returned. My friend and I enjoyed cocktails and several small plates, everything was terrific. I will definitely put Hal's back into my rotation.
The poached eggs on my benedict were slightly overdone, but still tasty. My wife's scramble was very good. Service was friendly and quick. Coffee and latte were very good. We enjoyed our dining experience at Hal's then took a leisurely stroll up and down Abbott Kinney.
Grilled shrimp was excellent, and so was the catfish. Nice cocktail bar. Happy Hour prices are a nice extra.
lf you like garlic, and more garlic and more garlic try the Caesar salad....way too much garlic in the dressing. My wife and I were very surprised that there were no vegetable side dishes on the menu...can't remember the last time I was at a restaurant that had none. Haven't been to Hal's in a while, and it looks like that will be the case again.
We were the first table there and dined on the patio because my dog was with us. The service lacked immensely, considering only us and 1 other table were there and we only required our food and beverages. In addition to the food coming out incorrectly, there was just no consistency. I ordered an orange juice it came out with no ice. Shortly afterward, my friend ordered the same, but hers came with ice. Which is it??? The flies almost killed us. They were there from the moment that we sat down until the moment that we left. Never. Again.
Hal's can do no wrong. I absolutely love Hal's and have for many years. The original location down the street was my Cheers, and I'm just happy they are back, and still on Abbot Kinney. I live in Culver City now and have been to the Playa location too. I still prefer the Venice location. All around awesome as always and as expected!
We sat on the patio which was nice however flies were buzzing around our food. I ordered grilled seafood and the presentation was awful, the food was not properly cooked had to send back the shrimp which was raw. Waiter was obviously uncomfortable dressed black attire on a hot humid evening.
i will not go back.
Hal's is an amazing restaurant. Great service, great vibe.
Loved it. A summer evening on the out door patio is lovely and relaxing. The food is quite good.
Always have a great experience at Hal's! Great local restaurant with a warm friendly atmosphere. Great for dates and casual get togethers with friends! I highly recommend Hals!
The food was amazing. You must try their shrimp Paella and their Pineapple spicy margarita. Both were top! Also tried the mini Artichoke appetizer ... amazing!
Service was also great. Definitely going back.
Limited menu but the food and drinks were good. Good for a decent meal in a good location. You can talk a walk down trendy Abbot Kinney after dinner and pop into a bar.
Great neighborhood spot. Good food at affordable prices. Great bar and service.
Horrible seafood grill. Fish was rubbery. Ice cream was totally melted.
Sitting outside on the patio was lovely and relaxing. The food was as good as the setting.
My friend thoroughly enjoyed her birthday lunch!!
This is a smaller version of the Hal's that was located on Abbot Kinney closer to Venice Blvd. for many, many years. It is cosier with an excellent patio space and the same excellent food, service, and atmosphere.
I used to love Hal's at the old location - always reliable, warm, and very good food. This occasion was my birthday with friends, and it was incredibly lacking. My friend who hosted was embarrassed and apologetic because there was a strange smell near the door, all of the dishes we ordered were extremely disappointing (even the much-beloved caasar salad was only so-so). Beef was tough and flavorless, pasta was mushy, and scallops were overcooked. Even the cocktails were undistinguished. It was shocking, actually - as if they could do no right! Sadly, I won't be back, and I certainly won't recommend it to anyone.
Wonderful, attentive, friendly service from everyone. The Brussels sprouts appetizers were unusual , but not tasty. The catfish and rice, ordinary. Hamburger looked excellent. French fries extremely good.
Probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Every bite was on point.
Always fun and delicious. You must try the crispy and luscious bread pudding. It’s decidedly worth the calories and the extra 15 minutes. Enjoy!
The food at Hal's brunch exceeded expectations. First, it was a nice combination of breakfast and lunch items. Lychee Martini was excellent. Burger, salad, chiliquiles were all excellent. Liked the halibut tacos and wet burrito .
Great service and a very good meal in a relaxing setting.
Fabulous... as always.
The food, staff and musicians were exquisite. The staff was very friendly, the music was a plus and the food was amazing! I will be back!
Not a big issue but IF...I had any suggestion to the restaurant to make it an even better experience than what we had....I remember seeing "American Idol" and something else on the other tv while the jazz musicians were on a break...I can't recall if it was only during the musicians break? But play in the large tv's some cool graphics or fish swimming in water or something else to compliment the music, atmosphere and mood. If they had the tvs off while the musicians played, then never mind because we still had the best experience in a long time, thank you. :)
Been a patron of the original Hal’s for years, and have been to the new Primitivo at night...
came for Mother’s Day lunch, nice table outside,
but was surprised to find they only served a short Mexican menu.
Burrito was wrapped in paper.
Didn't know Hal's turned into a Mexican restaurant.
Food and drinks were very good aswas the service. Great atmosphere on the patio.
It would help if the even partly validated the parking in back of the restaurant. $10 to park is pretty steep.
Consistently great service and food! Menu is varied although not huge. Will keep coming back.
Service was good. Food was just OK. We’ve been there many times. Maybe we’re done with it
Best burger and fries, with a martini you are all set.
