I was seated and placed my order. Once my drink arrived, the waitress said "The kitchen was backed up and it was going to be a 45-minute wait for my food". I told her that was too long, so I paid for my drink and left.
I visited Half Smoke with my boyfriend and we had a conflicted experience. The service, ambience and mimosas were bomb... but then when the brunch was finally brought out we were very disappointed. My “Oh you too fancy” meal consisted of a large mound of unseasoned grits, sprinkled with 4-5 pieces of shrimp and even less andouille sausages. My boyfriend’s “The walk of shame burger” is better served on the child’s menu as it was very small. Moreover the portion of “home fries” was stingy too. I will say the sauce drowning my meal was tasty and the burger was cooked to his liking. Nevertheless, overall no longer a fan 👎🏽
Brunch was excellent. Food and service was great. We went for bottomless mimosas and we were never without a drink. We will be coming back! Thank you for the great experience!
Service was absolutely terrible. I understand it’s a tough time for all, but we watched servers walk around, drink laugh and ignore all patrons for 25 minutes. It was a quiet Monday night with only three tables. It took a half hour to get our order in, and when someone finally took it they were rude and condescending. Will not be back
It was fun! Although they said Opentable was at fault for the reservation I reserved, we got seated within 30 minutes of arriving. Food took a while due to short staff but they assured us it was on the way even providing us complimentary fries! The bottomless mimosas were terrific. They ran out of pineapple but we can’t wait to go back and hopefully try it!
I made a reservation for 1:30 my party didn’t eat until 4:30, they were out of a lot of drinks & food and the food was just okay.
Great atmosphere but waited 3 hours for my food to reach the table, by the time it came, I was already turned off and wanted to just go home.
It was a good experience I came for a lil friend get-together on 4th of July. The servers took our temperature at the door. We were seated outside as requested. It’s a small outdoor seating area so you would think that they would keep some tables empty to keep everyone 6 feet apart but they didnt. Eventually the whole outdoor area was full, which I did not like. The area is beautiful though. The food was good and in the same price range as Milk & Honey, and it has it’s own taste for sure. They have a lot more options for food to suit most lifestyles such as vegan and vegetarian. It was a plus that they marked which was which on the menu. Loved the bottomless mimosas which you can get at any time of the day and choose either orange juice or cranberry juice. They include an all day brunch menu as well. Thats why I think this is going to be my new go to stop for brunch! I love the menu items names, they are so contemporary and black-ish
So pretty much I only gave it a 4 stars because of not distancing people in the little outdoor seating area. But I will be coming back!
Service could have been a little faster outside but overall great experience. Will be back.
Was able to make a reservation for outside, unfortunately, they informed me once I arrived that outside was booked and our reservation could only be honored inside. I was okay with this but they should be more diligent in the future to remove the option to make reservations outside if it is not available.
Made a reservation for 8, which OpenTable allowed. They did not attempt to contact me to tell me that it could only be no more that 6 per table. So part of our party was sat elsewhere. The Brunch option was not explained until we questioned about it. We ordered our food and after waiting about 45 minutes it finally delivered and that's when they told us one of the options ordered was not available and asked if they could make them something else. Staff seemed very frazzled and untrained. Overheard one staff member state he would read the training manual whenever he had time. This was the only time I've visited this place so I don't know if this is typical or Covid related.
Service was very slow. Good but extremely slow. We didn’t get our food till after 1.5 hrs
It was sweet. The space was cute but needed updating outside. The lights were magical and the music was on point!!!! The food is absolutely delicious! Make sure you get the Shrimp n Grits when you go!
Our waiter was amazing.
HalfSmoke is a lot of fun! Love the music and the vibe. Will be back soon.
Great $30 happy hour! Fun environment! Thoroughly enjoyed my time
SUCH good food, atmosphere and general vibe. Our server Lana was great! She made sure our food was HOT and our drinks were never empty.
Slow service, food was overcooked had to send back. Bottomless mimosa ordered with food per person but only one was brought to our table. I like the music and vibe very cool setting with early 90's themes throughout which was a nice touch.
Exceptional staff, vibe, music and food. I’d for sure come back when in DC!!!
It was amazing, I was celebrating my anniversary with my girlfriend and felt super welcomed and our waitress made sure everything was perfect. Amazing food and amazing service.
While the servers themselves and the manager Michelle were great, we (a party of 3) experienced many challenges patronizing Halfsmoke. Our reservation was at 3:30pm but we weren’t seated for about 20-25 minutes. We ordered around 4pm and our food arrive AFTER 5pm. When the food arrived, it was incomplete with the orders lacking key items (home fries, fried pickles, etc.). When we brought it to Michelle’s attention, she was very gracious and cited “2 cooks calling off” as the source of the delays. While understandable, those challenges should never be experienced by the patrons. It reflects poorly on the management and their ability to staff appropriately. As an added bonus, we observed the other manager (we did not get his name) on his phone while helping to get orders out — which, presumably affects the efficiency of order delivery and we observed a worker, whose post was at the fryer, EATING while frying up food for orders. I’m not an expert on DC food code, but as a public health professional with a background in food safety, this is very concerning. Sunday brunches can be busy and overwhelming. Establishments such as Halfsmoke need to have at minimum TWO contingency plans in place in the event of limited staff.
We had fun. Our waitress, Chantal C., was good. She was very flexible and kept checking in with us to make sure we were doing good. We’ll be back again!
It was my Birthday celebration.
Long wait for the food but it was worth it. Great service!
Just a bit too noisy for my taste and my girlfriend. The food was interesting but very tasty and appetizing. Think I’ll try it again but not on a Saturday night.
It took longer than an hour to get our food and our server barely acknowledged us the entire meal. We had to flag people for everything.
Very busy, our table wasn’t ready, our food and drinks took forever. Such a cool spot. Would try lunch next time instead of dinner. Definitely make a reservation if you are not a local.
NICE EXPERIENCE, MUSIC AND FOOD WAS GOOD. LOVED THE GAMES.
Great location, service and food! Would highly recommend to anyone in the area.
Once again...Justice was amazing. She continues to provide excellent customer care and service.
Food took a long time to arrive and was cold. The ambiance was fun and the mimosas were terrific.
Just overall was a great experience. I loved the vibe! I was in town visiting my best friends and we came in for brunch. So glad we did...it reminded me why I love DC so much!
Portions were really small. It was disappointing that a place called half smoke skimped on their meat.
We came for the brunch with unlimited mimosas and the restaurant had no champagne. Then, when we asked for a drink substitution, there was no manager present to talk to so the waitress would make one. So, we left.
While my friends and I had a reservation, was seated and finishing up our brunch the waitress asked us to hurry up and finish so that she could sit a party of 6 where we were. The issue that came into play was that not far by there was an empty table made to sit 6, so why must we leave when we are paying?
Overall, the food was good and I really enjoyed the 1990s nostalgia. However, in general, it is a bit overpriced.
Couldn't have been better. The serves were super accommodating and attentive to our needs. A lot of good reviews from people who came to our happy hour, but it couldn't have been a success without the kindness of the staff. Special thanks to Michelle who was so helpful in making sure our needs were met!
I went there for the first time for brunch to celebrate my birthday and it was great. I was so happy with service and everything. I can’t wait to go back
This was my first time at halfsmoke, we were very excited to try it out as we had a group of 8 people. The restaurant was fairly empty but we were seated in the back corner. Though the waitress was nice, the service was incredibly slow. It took 30 min to get drinks and they constantly had to come back to double check that they took our order correctly. Not to mention they brought the wrong foods multiple times. Instead of checking in on us our waitress and other staff members would eat at the table next to us which was just bizarre. As we sat in the back corner with empty tables around us, one table had a printer and laptop on it? It just felt very informal.
One our group members was confronted by a homeless man in the bathroom who screamed at him with swear words and threatened him. Our waitress told us that this happens all the time but it just felt bizarre that they didn’t seem to care.
The food was fine but with the overall experience I don’t think I would ever come back or recommend this restaurant to a friend.
The food was fantastic! The only complaint was that it was just soooo loud in there. It was towards the end of brunch so I just think a lot of people were a little drunk and rowdy, so maybe it would be calmer during other times of the day. Would still go back since the food was so good!
