Comida excepcional, servicio bueno, ambiente demasiado aburrido. Buena carta de vinos. Precios exorbitantes
I had higher expectations of this restaurant... I’ve been to Benu and am shocked Biko outranked Benu (#67) in World’s Best at #65. In my honest opinion, I did not feel that some of the ingredients mixed well, nor did we get a sense of the “contemporary Mexican” cuisine. It seemed that the flavors were all over the place from under salted, to over salted, to fishy and then sour. Pairings were good but we left full yet unsatisfied.
The place is a bit stuffy; the wine menu is atrocious (and overpriced), while the white-table service doesn't do credit to the quality of the food. The foie gras dish is too large, the fish dish is the only highlight of the meal, the waiters scramble to find English-speaking waiters, slow service. We saw a few diners stare at the menu and leave.
Excelente servicio. Comida excelente. Alternativas excelente.
The food itself looked and tasted good, but the service was poor and definitely not of the caliber this restaurant was trying to show itself as.
The tasting menu was a good selection of dishes and just the right amount of food. However, none of the courses were exceptional, just good. The ambience and decor were lacking a little warmth and liveliness.
Soy muy viajero y he visitado muchos restaurantes.
Biko is a modern, minimalist, casual restaurant located in a very good area. The food, a perfect basque-mexican cousine, was very delicious. I chose the tasting menu and called ahead of my reservation to ask if meat could be replaced meat dishes for fish or shellfish, they confirmed so. When we arrived the server called on the maître d' and he not only graciously re-confirmed my request, but he explained the substitutions.
My son decided not to have the tasting menu and instead ordered three dishes. Everything was super delicious. The bread selections were outstanding and they kept coming back to offer warm breads through out the meal. We decided not to have the wine pairings, instead each had a glass of Moet et Chandon, which by the way, was a full glass and more than enough to accompany our meal. The desserts were also delicate and sumptuous. The 6-7 dishes from the tasting menu and the three from the standard menu were all excellent and more than sufficient for a dinner.
I just wished that service would have been a little better. We felt that because we didn't order the wine pairing, they lacked attention to some details, but overall, we recommend Biko, at least if you are a "seafood foodie" like ourselves.
With a special menu for tasting, the experience was nice. Except for the quality of the meals. I guess that for the price, we must receive better fish ("extraviado" instead best) Pork with normal feeding and not excellent salads. The service were friendly but my perception was that there would be some kind of discrimination to not good looking people at the entrance.
It is a loss for the Mexico City culinary scene that this jewel of a restaurant will be closing temporarily on Dec. 23, prior to a move to another location. I certainly hope the hiatus is not prolonged, because I love the amazing food and the impecable service. I always have the tasting menu (menú de gustación), since it allows the chef to show his ability to work with a range of ingredients and is topped off with not one, but two, delicious desserts.
Gracias
Nice food but not amazing food.
A beautiful restaurant, with fairly good service. About 50/50 patronized by foreigners and Mexicans. Upstairs in the Polanco neighborhood, not too far from Pujol. Website is not maintained so that menus provided is different than one on website. A little English spoken. Nothing was too memorable except the fine deserts, deconstructed similar to Alinea in Chicago.
The ambience was relaxing and comfortable on our Tuesday night date, the diners kept arriving but the restaurant has a zen simple decor and good sound dampening. Each dish was wonderful, and in my view, not overly orchestrated like some modern Spanish cuisine can be, no scented pillows that the diner has to puncture and sniff before eating. Whatever the complexity involved in producing the dishes, that didnt get in the way of enjoying the mix of textures and flavors. The green gazpacho was amazing, as was the foie gras with pineapple dish.
Food is average and some diners were extremely noisy spoiling the ambience completely. Service was not very well coordinated.
This is an awful restaurant. We went because it was rated in the Top 100 in the world. It was the worst meal we had in Mexico City. We got the Tasting Menu, and 3 of the dishes were downright bad, 2 were mediocre, and 2 were slightly better but I still wouldn't say good.
If the price was 10X less, I still wouldn't come here.
Initially my girlfriend and I planned our trip to Mexico with the intention of trying new and exciting food. Mexico city has wonderful options in the area of fine dining. Biko was a high a high priority for us after reading reviews online and looking at their tasting menu.
I am by no means a food expert. At best I might consider myself a "foodie". With that being said this was a new experience for me. Most of the courses were paired with a sauce which a gentlemen would apply to the dish as they reached the table. Everything we ate was cooked correctly, and the flavors were balanced really well. Lastly, I'm sure my girlfriend would like me to note that the desert was a delicate and delicious balance of ice cream and herbs.
I would happily come back and try something aside from the tasting menu.
My limited Spanish left me struggling with a full comprehension of the menu descriptions. Courses came out in a timely fashion. Were larger than expected, given previous reviews and were full of flavor. Especially enjoyed the camarones and pescado verde Apia! Our waiter was also extremely charming 😊
The interior environment is good, and it is easy to get to the place. But the food is poor, at least i don't like it. We ordered tasting menu and three other courses. Overall, the tasting menu is okay, but nothing surprises me. The roasted baby pork is made of chopped meat. The roasted quail is really horrible. The truffle and the meat are over burnt. The side which looks like 'green pearl' is disgusting with a strange taste of Seaweed.
Upon arrival at Biko the waiter quickly greeted us and asked if we had a reservation, yes we did. Our reservation was at 430 pm and the waiter kindly reminded us that the restaurant closes at five. I was not alarmed since I knew what I wanted to eat. Food came out in a timely manner, and in between dishes being served drinks were served and a choice of bread. Appetizers and soups were served with our meal and were included in the price. I ordered the hamachi and ceviche, both were excellent and I would order again. This place is excellent, the next time I visit CDMX I will be sure to eat at Biko!
Everything we ordered was mediocre. The Hamachi appetizer was awful. It had a very strong, fishy taste. We couldn’t finish it, but they made sure it was still on the bill. My seafood entree was decent, and the bread choices were tasty. The place was very bland, as was the service, and the food. It seems hard to believe this is rated as top restaurant in Latin America.
All in all I would give Biko 4 stars. The staff were great, the wine list was amazing, and the noise level was nice and quiet. My only complaint is that the food is lacking in flavor. The presentation was immaculate but I feel like the dishes got lost in being fancy for the sake of being fancy and the flavors were lost a long the way. Not to say that anything tasted bad, more just everything was just in a mildly bland limbo. The price was pretty on par for fine dining so nothing wrong there.
We did the Chefs tasting menu with pairing of wine/sherry. The food was amazing. The service was on point. We really enjoyed the experience.
For my taste, the decor felt kind of sterile. That being said, we were not there to critic the space.
Food was decent, however atmosphere was very sterile and quite boring.
Beautiful restaurant in a beautiful area of Mexico City. The language barrier presented some difficulty. Our waiter barely spoke English and there did not seem to be an English version of the menu. The tasting menu was not expensive but the portions were very very very small. The wines they served with the pairing for the tasting menu were for the most part sub-par which was unfortunate. The portions for items that were not on the tasting menu looked delicious and were a nice size. Since we couldn't decipher the menu, we went for the tasting menu which made it easier but then regretted it after seeing the dishes served at other tables which looked fabulous. Overall though, it was a really nice dining experience and I would definitely recommend going.
