First time to San Diego with my family. We were seated promptly and drink orders taken by Jeremy. He was gracious and courteous with my family. The other waitstaff was phenomenal as well.
Food was delicious. Ordered a taco plate and everything was delicious.
Keep up the great job Jeremy, and the rest of the staff at Barrio Star.!
Loved this dining experience here, the food, and blood orange margaritas!
The kitchen was a bit off tonight but after Barrio Star being a favorite for over a decade, we will cut some slack. The food is always good the wait staff is what makes this neighborhood gem. Kyle and Curtis always make our dining experience the best. We couldn't ask for better waiters - both are very good at their jobs. Thanks Curtis for another great evening.
We loved Paola our server! Thanks!
Barrio has never been known for their service. But, the service was excellent on Sunday, 7/11. Thank you Poala!
The service here is awesome! Every time we've been we really get taken care of and feel welcome. This place is a gem right off of Balboa Park and a nice 'getaway' to sit, feel the cool breeze, and get some great food. I would recommend trying 3 of their tacos, the Margarita flight, and staying a bit longer for dessert.
I’m a Barrio Star fan from way back. That’s why I took 3 friends to lunch there on July 5. It was disappointing. We ordered taco plates. The food was cold and uninspired. Sad about it. Maybe a fill in chef during the holiday?
Margarita Flight was great. Food tasted awesome and presented well. Great options for multiple dietary styles/choices.
So awful and so disappointing. How do you mess up a Mexican food experience in San Diego? - boy this place sure did. Food was so badly prepared and tasteless. They had stuff from the staff (back packs etc) just hanging around tables near the kitchen. Seems like a bunch of inexperienced people working the restaurant trying to get by with the bare minimum. Shame on open table for having this place as an option. Shoot there are so many great Mexican places in SD and rolled the dice to try something new but no dice here.
Very delicious food and drinks! The outside is really nice with a nice view of the neighborhood!
We waited an hour for our food and asked about 4 times to check on it.
Great food, staff are awesome. Love the ambiance.
Our waiter and the rest of the employees were great. Food was good and the I only took stats off because it took over an hour to get our food to the table after we order a couple tacos.
Our server, who said he has worked there forever ever, was phenomenal! We absolutely enjoyed his service. However, we waited over an hour for our food. They ran out of beans which is odd for a Mexican restaurant. The food was wonderful. Potato taco is my personal favorite. I would have given a 5/5 if we didn’t have to wait an hour, which is, well … EXTREME!
Over all, the experience was amazing. When booking my table it gave me the option to sit inside or outside, however when I got there they stated they had no indoor seats available, even though there was some. We were sat right out front, so didn’t get the full ambiance experience, but the food was great and the drinks are very good. Margarita flight is highly recommended.
Service was poor and it took at least 45 minutes to receive our food after it was ordered.
Great Place!! Good and service were both amazing!! Will definitely be back!
Wow, has this once a gem of a restaurant slid down hill since my last visit pre-Covid. The saving grace was our server who did her very best to accommodate me and the friend I was with. He ordered the roasted chicken and I, the carnitas chile relleno. The chicken was overcooked and dry...yes, even the dark meat. The chili relleno itself a steamed slimy texture because it wasn't roasted before assembly. Then it was served split open piled with melted cheese and the carnitas slopped served over a heaped pile of rice. Nothing near a propper batter coated and browned relleno. The presentation of both plates looked like they were assembled quickly with no forethought or finesse. Neither had any redeamable flavor.
We each ordered two margaritas; the first to refresh, the second to help us not be so bothered by the food quality. But our second drink tasted nothing like the first with the mixed flavors completely out of balance.
Then, there's the presentation of the restaurant itself; the asthetics. We were seated in a booth in a back room with the make-shift office and kitchen door adjacent. Its not a proper place to serve. What was once a clean, bright colorful dining room looks tired and unkempt, including a walkway to the restroom now used for storage with empty liquor boxes crammed into shelves along the way.
Needless to say, we won't be back. And unfortunately for this once upon a time favorite, word will spread.
Amazing food, service, and people. And I love that they’re pet friendly. My husband and I are always looking for places to dine that welcome our fur babies too. They hit all points!
Excellent and prompt service, from the moment we sat down to the very end. Drinks were made just right and brought out quickly.
Great! The food was delicious and our server was nice
Nice patio area and atmosphere inside. The Brazil Bowl was delicious.
Staff was sooo good to us! The food took a little bit to come out but they were busy so it’s understandable. The food was also DELICIOUS! Will definitely add it to my list of SD spots to revisit!
Food and staff were amazing! Will be back to try their happy hour menu.
This restaurant came highly recommended. Just in town in San Diego for a few days and wanted quality Mexican food. This place did not disappoint. Fantastic ownership and a really cool vibe. Authentic flavours and fantastic drinks. Very engaging servers that answered our questions and made for a wonderful experience. Will definitely go back when in town
So good!! Great margaritas and food!
A fantastic birthday celebration! Kyle our server was really helpful and fun. Everything was fresh and we are going back.
Great food that completely filled us up, and the margarita flights were so fun! We all ordered something different and we all were very happy.
What a great experience. The cucumbers were an incredible surprise! The chipotle wings were amazing! Great service.
Love that they provide vegan and gluten free options! While the waiter was very nice, the service was very slow. Had a great time here though!
One of my go-to employee luncheons. Love the food and staff.
Outdoor dining is really nice.
Service was great !
Great food and service! Definitely try the margaritas!
We arrived at 730pm for our reservation on time and after 830 we had barely been sat and never got food or drinks delivered to the table. It was for a close friends 40th birthday. The general manager was drunk the entire time. I am thoroughly embarrassed and suggest they be removed from this platform. I will continue action to make this incredible wrong right again.
My daughter arrived in San Diego for a one week visit, after two years apart. I thought that since she was arriving on May 5, it would be fun to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. BIG MISTAKE. I have always avoided going to restaurants on holidays like Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, etc., thinking I would have poor service and bad food. We proved my theory at Barrio Star. Our table was right next to the kitchen, and my husband got hit numerous times by the swinging doors. We waited 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and waited 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. In all that time, no-one came to take our food order. When we finally ordered, it was fairly simple. One nachos and two taco plates with three types of tacos per plate. When the food finally arrived, The tacos were almost unidentifiable. Shrimp taco, good. Fish taco, good. Spicy chicken and steak unrecognizable by appearance or taste. Nachos okay, but thrown together…not layered. Chips were piled on the bottom and toppings were lumped together on top. Also, noise level was horrific because of the holiday crowds! Not coming back!
We love coming here! The food is fantastic and the margaritas are the best in town.
Nice patio and they accommodated us quickly. I appreciated how nice the staff was and very grateful the host let us sit at the table I asked for. Thank you!
Horrible experience, hostess was extremely rude.
They were short staffed and it didn’t hurt the service at all, they hustled and did a fantastic job.
We have not been to Barrio Star in a while. We went to participate in Dining Out For LIfe. The food was fantastic and our server (April) as a delight. We are already talking about when we might go back!
