Will not go again. Excellent food, but the sound level was so loud that I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me.

I believe I wrote this review more than once now. Assaggi Osteria is a fine Italian restaurant. The food was fine, the drinks were very good & the waiter was helpful. Nothing was exceptional.

First visit and all was wonderful! They split a very nice arugula salad for us, which was thankfully not overdressed, and then split cacio e pepe and veal Milanese for us in the kitchen as well. We wish more restaurants were willing to do that, since we like to share often. We also discovered a nice wine by the glass--a red blend from Sicily. The only mis-step was the bread--it was fabulous, but came much later than the salad. The cacio e pepe and veal Milanese were among the best we've ever had, both in the US and in Italy. The cacio e pepe could have use more pepper, but this is characteristic of the dish in the US. We were so glad a friend recommended this restaurant--we definitely will return to try other dishes.
Honestly everything was just okay. We went on a weekday celebrating a birthday and were sat immediately. We hoped to grab a drink at the bar before our reservation but it was full, no big deal. The restaurant floor itself had maybe one or two other tables. I had high expectations for this place so maybe that’s why I was so disappointed. The caprese needed salt and had the smallest amount of chopped basil. The bolognese just tasted like everyday jar meat sauce, not up to par for being one of “the best” Italian restaurants in the area. (Try Alta Strada for bolognese). Although the paccheri pasta itself was prepared well. We also shared the Tuscan orecchiette with kale and sausage which was our preferred pasta of the two. The scallops in my entree were cooked perfectly and delicious although the mushroom risotto it came with was not good. I must’ve misread the menu because I never would have ordered it if I knew they paired scallops with so much cheese. Not very authentic and it had the texture of cold oatmeal. My partner ordered the steak and it was cooked to his requested temperature but was not memorable after that. For dessert we shared The tiramisu and pistachio gelato. The gelato was wonderful and worthy of coming back for but the tiramisu was flavorless, an immediate regret after the first bite.
Service was attentive, the server and backwaiters were very kind and always there if we needed something and offered a nice wine pairing. Did not see a manager working the floor but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t one I guess. We often get the “young people with tattoos in the corner” treatment when we go out for a nice meal but the attitude faded after realizing we were spending $275 on dinner for two (apps, pastas, entrees, desserts, wine, after dinner drinks, etc). Although noted in the reservation, there was no mention of us celebrating a birthday.
Pasta ok but small portions and overpriced. Bread was good but there are more reasonable restaurants with more varied menus and wines by the glass. This place needs a new menu and prices to survive.
We sat out on the patio, which was very pleasant, and the service and food were excellent!
Both my wife and I ordered pasta dishes, and clearly the pastas are freshly made, and the sauces had a lot of flavor.
My friends and I arrived and there was no one to greet us, when a waiter saw us he escorted us to a table. Our waiter was very attentive and before long the bread, breadsticks and olive oil arrived. The bread had burn marks from a grill all over and a surprise to us because your bread is usually wonderful. I had to ask for another basket which was delivered quickly and was as expected.
The rest of the meal was delicious, as usual. Thank you, this was a belated birthday lunch for our friend.
The food and service was exceptional. It would be very nice if there were an affordable house wine option. Then, we could go more often!
Lovely renovation, quiet and private. This restaurant has always been special.
I will give Assagi another try but this Mother's Day meal was mixed. The grilled calamari appetizer and the pasta half-portion 2nd course were outstanding; the grilled branzino over spinach was dry and needed something more. It was just not good and the portion was very small for all four of us. The service was outstanding--our waiter was terrific. But all in all, the main course was not good. The final bill was high, and they charged a $24 corkage fee--way too high and simply unreasonable in this day and age.

The black ink pasta and the scallops were better than expected, but the steak was not cooked to exact request. The service was uneven, but the waiter tried hard to make things right.
Beet salad is terrific! My husband had the calamari which he enjoyed very much.
For entrees, We had the seared scallops, and the cacio e pepe- both were very good!
We shared the gelato for dessert. Unfortunately there was no pistachio.
Our waiter was entertaining and very attentive.
We love having this restaurant in downtown McLean.
Only thing is that the waiter should have told us that the veal Melanesia’s was a 16 oz size so my husband and I would have gotten a pasta dish and one veal dish. Had to take half of it home. Also we had 8 pm reservations and you were already out of the scallops dish and Pinot Noir!
Assaggi Osteria is simply the best, as we had a wonderful evening over great food (always) and conversation with special friends (whom had never been to Assaggi Osteria) - thank you

What a great meal - we loved it all!
The wait staff had great suggestions and was always on top of things from a service perspective - we never needed to ask for a refill of anything.
Appetizers: veal stuffed olives (different and delicious) and the calamari (tender and great smoky sauce) were fantastic!
Pasta - had the veal stuffed ravioli with mushrooms in a brown butter sauce - so rich tasting.
Main courses: We had the Veal - hug portion and delicious and pan fired Halibut - very tender/delicious red pepper sauce.
Dessert: Donuts - loved the chocolate sauce.
Phenomenal food, Phenomenal service
Change over in staff and they didn't skip a beat. All servers and management are outstanding, food great and well worth the visit. We frequent often and with the change over were concerned. No need to be concerned, just as good as ever. While a bit pricey the quality of the meal is worth the price.

My friends and i had an outstanding experience at Assaggi where I have eaten many times before. The food was very special this time and the whole dining experience was made even more perfect because of our waitress -- a lovely, charming, extremely helpful young woman. The only small problem was that because there were several large groups of diners and it was a weekend night, the noise level was louder than usual. Even this, could not diminish the lovely dinner we had.
We had a nice meal for our anniversary but I thought it was quite expensive overall.
This was our first visit to Assaggi since its remodeling and conversion into an osteria and pizzeria. We really enjoyed the old Osteria Assaggi; we were disappointed by the new iteration. First of all, the menu is now very limited--especially in the seafood area, which is the area we favor. Assaggi's soups were always outstanding but now there is no soup on the menu. We made our selections from the menu, but when the server came to take our order, we were told that the two appetizers and one of the main dishes we'd chosen from the menu were, in fact, no longer being served. The main dishes that we selected as compromise--a ravioli different from the one on the menu and lamb chops--were good. The bread is still very good (a new bread has been added to the basket). Our server was very gracious and said that the menu was in transition--hence the differences between what was listed and what was available. However, prices seemed a little steep for what we got.
We'd like to try the pizzeria on another occasion but are not likely to return to the osteria.
One of our favorite restaurants. Great food and great service. I either get the Veal Milanese or the pasta with Bolognese. Pastas are made in house and are spectacular. Great selection of Italian wine.

Valentines Day dinner. We typically order the fresh pasta but we branched out. I had the lamb chops, which were the best I’ve ever had! My husband had the steak. He requested medium rare and it came out medium well. But he said it was delicious. It’s not a steak house. Service is always top notch and atmosphere is romantic.

Delicious, efficient and comfortable—great place for a good meal. Need some gluten free dessert but chef has some interesting flavor combinations. Thoroughly enjoyed.
We chose to dine here for Valentine’s Day. We did not order the special menu, however, the items on the regular menu were outstanding. We shared the appetizer of trumpet mushrooms with foie gras and duck prosciutto rosettes on top with assorted tiny greens.
The Cacio e Pepe was deliciously tossed cheese and pepper bucatini, which we shared as a first course, and the veal Milanese followed with a nicely oil tossed arugula side. The veal breading was a little heavy, but deliciously flavorful. The pistachio, vanilla, and chocolate gelato were excellent.
It’s so nice to have this restaurant staple in McLean!

Went for winter restaurant week only to find out they weren't participating for whatever reason even tho they were listed as a participating restaurant. Had a very nice meal of shishito peppers, asparagus, black in squid pasta and branzino. Service was very good. Food was seasoned well.

This recent visit to Assaggi was great. The fish, pasta, wine, bread, and service were all outstanding. One of the best restaurants in NoVa, and probably the best Italian restaurant.
