Set in a charming and historic house on a ridge overlooking The Rivanna River in Charlottesville, Virginia, 1799 at The Clifton is committed to cooking beautiful, locally sourced food in a warm yet chic atmosphere. Michelin Starred Chef Matthew Bousquet and his team are dedicated to giving you the best of new Piedmont cooking in a special way. We knew being vegetarians would be tough-but did not realize it would deflate the soul to the extent it did. Because we were stuck with the risotto and this one had too much salt to our liking & was utterly uninspiring. Alas, we have to cross this one out too. Kind hearted souls, look elsewhere.

Our server Chris was exceptional. He was knowledgeable and attentive. He was not arrogant or pushy. The appetizers and main courses were exceptional. The wine was very good, but not a bargain.

The Chef's amuse-bouche and birthday cake were mediocre; however, the trout, escargot, and beef bourguignon were fantastic. The wine and cocktails were also very good. The service was excellent and we loved the space and ambiance.

This charming, inviting and very comfortable dining room was the perfect spot for a highly civilized New Year's Eve dinner. The five-course prix fix offered three choices for each course, with a wide variety to suit any taste. Our server paced the meal perfectly and was warm and professional. While one or two of the dishes were a bit uneven, over all the food was delicious and well presented. This is an excellent choice especially for a relaxed and special dinner.
