The restaurant was founded in 1895 on rue de la Coutellerie, a street that owes its name to the many active cutlers. Its current name is more recent, no doubt due to the offbeat humour of one of its previous owners! On arriving at the Relais du Vin, you will have walked down rue Saint Denis, one of the oldest streets in Paris, laid out by the Romans as early as the first century, so named because it leads directly from the Pont-au-Change to Saint-Denis, where the Saint is said to have collapsed after his martyrdom. Visitors should be aware that this was a ‘gala’ street, through which kings and queens traditionally made their solemn entry into Paris. For these festivities, all the streets in their path, as far as Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, were carpeted with silk fabrics and cameloté sheets.

Bonjour, nous avons bien apprécié notre dinée dans votre restaurant. Ce pendant nous nous sommes senti un peux à l'étroit, du moins la ou nous étions assis. A part cette gène tout le reste était parfait. Le service était top, les serveurs et serveuses très agréable. Merci beaucoup. Aux plaisir.

Some highest highs and very lows here. Scallops three ways were incredible…..but lamb three ways was close to inedible—the loin was accompanied by a large pool of gelatinous squid ink, and the lamb leg sausage presentation made it look like it required a plastic baggie. The service was attentive until the end, when we couldn’t get our check….also, sauces were poured sloppily, and our server was none too happy about having to speak in English. Memorable in many ways, not all positive.
