Friend of a Farmer
Good food, nice menu, wonderful staff. A warm and cozy place. It never disappoints.
Years ago, when I worked in the East Village, I'd eat often at Friend of a Farmer.I now live on the Upper West Side so I hadn't been back in a while. I had matinee theater tickets at the Daryl Roth Theater and wanted to eat at Friend of a Farmer again. My friend and I totally enjoyed our lunch. Great food, service and ambiance.
It’s was great! The food was fantastic and the service was great too. We were in the back upstairs so it was quiet. Perfect for a date night!
I like this place but the service is always less responsive than I would like. Even when the place is empty, no one checks in with your table.
They stopped taking Amex, so I will have to stop going there.
This used to be my go-to for special lunches with co-workers or new hires - a bit of country in the city. There complementary corn bread with apple compote was to die for; I was told by the waiter that they only serve it at brunch. Too bad because when I asked for bread, my guest and I were each brought a side plate of greasy over-toasted baguette slices - think oversized croutons - and charged $2 each. I complained when I got the bill but it wasn’t taken off; pretty insulting for what was a very overpriced and meh entree and coffee ($5.50 each). My salmon came on a bed of steamed kale (substitute for spinach) and no starch. I was craving dessert (or cornbread) after that but didn’t want to shell out another $11 for what would probably have been another disappointment.
Wonderful place to eat and get great service with quality food
I have been coming in here when I can for 31 years. When I have guests who want a relaxing dinner with excellent service and atmosphere I take them here.
The appetizers are overpriced. Otherwise the food is good and it's a beautiful cozy place.
Pretty basic and uninspired food but a cute and charming setting
Although the food was delicious, the service was deplorable.
Love this place for brunch. So cute and quaint. The coffee is spectacular
Our waiter was incredibly pushy from the moment we were seated. He wanted our drink and food orders almost immediately, and insisted on pushing us toward “the most popular cocktail” and the most popular appetizer, the most popular entree, etc as if we didn’t have minds or desires of our own. I dine out frequently and have rarely had a more aggravating experience with service. He left our finished plates on the table, never checked to see if we needed more water, The food itself was just warm when it arrived, and honestly nothing at all special. Definitely not worth the price. I was disappointed, having heard good things about this place, but maybe a couple of years has taken its toll on the place or it’s under different management.
Wonderful brunch spot! Homey and warm atmosphere.
Always excellent food and excellent service! I am never disappointed
Awesome meal. Cozy spot. Highly recommend!
Excellent from start to finish. Great decor & ambience, helpful server w/ my gluten & nightshade issues. Everything was fresh & full of flavor. Their fresh pressed mocktail was divine (so nice to have a fun & healthy non-alcoholic option) & from the cheese & charcuterie platter to our entrees the presentation was beautiful and food so delicious. Will definitely be back! A new favorite.
This was our best NYC meal on this trip and a great value too! The food and cocktails were great. Our waiter was both helpful and knowledgeable. The decor was perfect and noise level minimal. We were so full, we didn’t get to deserts but the flavors of the appetizer and main courses were balanced so we didn’t miss desert. Will definitely return.
We received excellent service from the waiter and the food was delicious. I truly appreciated all of the care that the waiter took with my food order as I have food allergies. I will be happy to return to the restaurant again.
However, I wanted to let you know that your busboys came by way too often. In the span of 10 minutes, we had them stop by 5 different times to try to clear plates. It got so ridiculous that when a guy came around for the sixth time, I snapped a little and said "ENOUGH, PLEASE GIVE US A WHILE BEFORE YOU STOP BY AGAIN." Sorry about that. We were just mid serious conversation and kept getting interrupted over and over and it got kind of ridiculous. I think the problem was that there were so many bus boys that they didn't keep track of where each one had already stopped.
Feels like home away from home! The grass fed filet mignon was outstanding! The always reliable Terry Allen Chicken delighted the women at our table. We were, for the first time, in the "private" upstairs dining room which was cozy and romantic. As always, a memorable dining experience!
Food was far too salty. It ruined the entire meal and was inedible.
Fantastic restaurant—great service, comfy, beautiful decor, incredible food. I appreciate the music being low and it's easy to hear everyone at the table. Very classy place.
Food is good. Cocktails delicious. Service super slow.
We were seated right away! I loved the atmosphere and feel of the place! The food was AMAZING! They had a lot of tables crammed in a small space so people had to move their tables to let people in and out of their seats. The service was okay. Our server was very nice but wasn’t seen often and had “a lot of other tables on the other side” of the restaurant, as if we were a low priority. He also checked on us barely once. Good thing the food was perfect and we didn’t actually need anything. Again, nice guy, but not attentive at all! Overall 4/5.
Quality food and service, tasty drinks, and a nice fireplace on a cold night.
Food and service was excellent. The chicken wrap that I had for lunch was so fresh and delicious! I would definitely return there when I go back to visit NYC
There was a mouse crawling by the fireplace. Service was very slow. Food was average.
My first visit and definitely will not be my last. Our server, Carl, could not have been more accommodating. The busboy, Meo? ( no idea how to spell his name!) saw we loved the cornbread and offered to pack an extra to take home. Felt as if we were dining in someone’s country home. Wonderful venue with lots of character. Tables are a little close, but it didn’t diminish our experience. See you again soon.
Warm and welcoming. Highly professional service.
Amazing ambiance, cozy and very cute. Food was good, some dishes better than others - Brie was extremely small. Overall a good experience
The best description that I can give of Friend of a Farmer is my wife's comment that whenever we visit NY we will always eat one meal at Friend. We have eaten there twice and each time has been absolutely wonderful. We also had a great conversation with our waiter about the neighborhood and theatre in NY. It was easy to reserve through Open Table and we appreciated the reminders of our reservation. Great food in an old carriage house.
Ambiance, drinks and service were great. Food, particularly dinner entrees, were not very good and expensive. Also were sold out of a lot of dishes.
I want to like this place. The food is excellent and the service is friendly. The fireplace is a beautiful touch... But why are you playing Sirius fm radio hits of the 70s and 80s like it’s a bodega? The music totally ruins the mood.
Love this place so much! Everything I order is absolutely delicious and fresh from the farm.
Dinner with my wife and daughter was warm and cozy on a cold Winter's might! Steak, fish and of course the Terry Allen chicken were the chosen dinners...all terrific! Highly reccomended!
Neighborhood gem!! Great crafted food in a unique restaurant layout.
The decor is like a midwestern farmhouse in 1994, but the quality of food was good. It was very tight and difficult to walk through to your table. Overall it was decent, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there again.
Expected more. Did like cozy upstairs room on a cold day. Of 3 entrees only one, chicken pot pie was excellent. Requested sweet potato fries with a sandwich order, were instead regular fries. Food delivered by bus person who could not act to replace and our waiter never returned to check if order ok. Finally askrd another server to find him. He apologized and said would have sweet pototoe fries in 2 mins. Finally came 10 min later after sandwich eaten. They were really good. Table shared them as dessert. 3rd entre cobb salad had nice grrens and dressing but grilled chicken strips on it were ice cold and very dry. Very skimpy amount of avocado and egg. Coffee ordered after was excellent. Again had to go searching for server to get check . May try the place again given overall high ratings by others. But 1st visit a big letdown.
Always a treat to dine at Friend of a Farmer. Consistently great quality food, and warm, professional, service. I love the cozy ambiance, as well. Thank You!
