Classic Mexican american restaurant. No surprises. Tableside guacamole was fun!
We had a great time. We will be back. Location is excellent, service was good and food was great!
Decades ago their original Los Angeles restaurant was a joy. And, when they opened on Fair Oaks in Pasadena we became regulars, both in the evening and for business lunches. Their place in the Paseo simply has no vibe, unlike its predecessors. And, because there are so many worthy alternatives in the area, it simply doesn’t cut it anymore.
We had lunch on Oct 23rd -- their 95th Anniversary. Having only been to their original restaurant on Western, this was our first experience at the Pasadena location. Sadly, they seemed unprepared for the crowds that showed up (because of the rollback price menu) and we were told several of the wait staff hadn't shown up. We finally moved to another table where it appeared a waiter was working. Food was as we remembered it and the margs were great.
When we checked in, we told the front desk we had an Open Table reservation and the gentleman looked on his screen and found our reservation and seated us. Regrettably, when we got home, I got a message from OpenTable indicating I had NOT kept my reservation so it took some effort on my part to get the mess corrected.
Fun and good.
Good food, nice presentation and service. Only 4 stars because it’s so pricey. Great for special occasion tho.
food was not good! even tortillas were not good. only thing good was the margarita
I am a frequent patron of this restaurant. (Usually grabbing a bite before a movie)
The restaurant has changed their menu. The Enchilada Suizas used to include 2 enchiladas. However they have cut back and now only serve 1 enchilada for the same price
Also the enchilada itself tasted different. Especially the sauce that the enchilada is cooked in
Very disappointing. I have to say that I may not go back after being a loyal El Cholo customer for over 20 years (at various locations)
Always a treat! Margqrita's can't be beat! Food is great! Service fantastic! Ambiance excellent!
A little over a year ago my family and I started coming to El Cholo again after a long "hiatus". Our first time back in a long time was a wonderful experience, so that made us want to keep coming back. Unfortunately, El Cholo has turned out to be one of the most inconsistent restaurant experiences we've had in Los Angeles. The jokes on us I guess because we keep coming back, hoping for an experience like we had before. There have been times when we literally thought the kitchen had changed all the original recipes to save money, mainly because the sauces tasted like they came out of cans. And the service has had its inconsistencies as well, with servers being attentive sometimes and sometimes not, sometimes forgetting what we ordered and sometimes not, sometimes delivering hot food and sometimes not. Well, we're done with El Cholo. Perhaps we'll get nostalgic once again in the not too distant future; but for now, we're looking for an alternative.
The Filet Mignon taco are the best also the corn Tamales
We were the first ones there, we came for brunch. It took so long for our food to arrive and when it finally did, not only was one plate wrong, but the others were COLD! Like i said, we were the only ones there. They were not busy. We also were not asked if we wanted refills, we sat outside and it was hot. Never again.
Family Birthday group of 8. Seated quickly. Attentive, yet not rushed, service. Four 1st- timers, loved the food. Everyone tried my Cocinita Pibil and loved it. Carne asada was also a hit. We chose the Guacamole, mild, which still had plenty of zing. Great margaritas!
Good food, good drinks, good service. Reasonably priced. Nice outdoor patio seating.
Waited for our waiter for about 10-15 minutes before they came to our table, even though the restaurant was empty. After our order was taken it took another 15 minutes to get our drinks. We had run out of water and asked for more but it didn’t get refilled for about 10 minutes or more.
All in all it was a very disappointing experience.
This is an offshoot of a once great Pasadena restaurant of the same name. They’ve dumbed down the menu and the service moves at a crawl. Plus the Paseo had no available parking. Avoid!
Excellent food and drinks. The enchiladas and tacos were very tasty as well as the rice and beans.
The drinks had a fair amount of alcohol and were enjoyed by others. The guacamole made right at
the table was excellent and the service and speed of the meal were first rate.
Our reservation was for 2 PM, well after the lunchtime. That said the service was almost nonexistent. My husband had to get up and find a server. Our party wasn’t large (4 adults and a toddler). It seemed totally understaffed. The food however, when brought, was very good. Perhaps it was just a one time bad day. The hostess was not friendly. It seemed like I was putting her out when I asked for a parking validation😡
Everything about this place is great
Good food , nice environment , nice staffs, clean and neat. Affordable. Overall very nice place to go hangout.
Worst food i have had in a long time. Rice an beans were stale and just reheated in microwave on a plate. Main dish was bland and reheated As well
Food and drinks are good and priced reasonably for the area. Service was slow, but probably due to being short-staffed. We will be back.
We had a party of 10. We were seated quickly and our order was taken promptly. Our food arrived quickly and it was amazing. Everyone loved their food.
I usually love El Cholo. This branch was slow and our food came out wrong and cold. One would be bad enough, but both is really poor. The food tasted okay, but not up to my usual El Cholo experience. Would still recommend the chain, but the experience at this location was poor.
I had a reservation for 6 people. Several more showed up than planned and that really threw the staff for a loop. It took forever to get my order taken (wait staff took other people’s order at my table but not mine - huh?). Salmon salad came with no dressing, told the waitress who told me the dressing was on it (it wasn’t). I really don’t want to argue about food I’m going to pay for. Waited 45-minutes for the check and then had to ask for it. On the other hand, the margaritas were very good.
👍🏽 friends and family
Filet mignon tacos are great, but I don't know what happened to the aged cheese quesadilla. It was as if the tortillas weren't fully cooked. Really doughy and not much cheese. So, in general, great place but stay away from the quesadilla. Or send it back for more cooking!
El Cholo is always great before the movie. The only negative was it was a SUPER hot night, and the AC wasn't keeping up- we were sweating BADLY during dinner.
This was the most drab and boring El Cholo I have ever visited. The hostess was very pleasant followed by a non-smiling miserable looking busboy. The server took a very long time to even acknowledge us and though she was also pleasant the service was just mediocre. What really got me was the lack of energy in the room. There was no music whatsoever, the decor looks in need of upgrades and I hated being seated right in front of all the dirty piled up dishes even though the place was empty. This was my first time at this location and I was very disappointed it did not carry the same appeal as the other locations. Thankfully the food was great and that would keep me coming back of course. But some damn music on, have the staff smile, and liven the place up for Gods sake!
Love it every time we go. Usually love mariachi’s, but specifically didn’t like the ones from Friday 6/22. Others have been great
Awful service. I will not be coming back.
When it comes to CalMex cuisine, you can't beat El Cholo!
I made a reservation on Open Table and we were seated promptly upon arrival. The green corn tamales were the best I’ve ever had there. The crab enchiladas were very good as well. We had Jose as our waiter and he was very attentive and friendly. One person ordered tacos and asked to have them leave off the onions but the kitchen forgot and she had to reorder it. The Cadillac margaritas were wonderful. They were very busy and one thing we so enjoyed last Father’s Day was the picture they took of our group with maracas and sombreros which was not offered. this year. Hopefully they will have that available next year as it is a nice momento
Our food was not hot, which was disappointing. I have eaten here before and food was great
The food and drinks are always good. I was just very put off by the hostesses who initially tried to tell me that because I made a same day reservation through OpenTable it was not valid. I pushed back and they actually took care of me in the end. It it was unfortunate that they had to start with blaming me for doing something wrong. It seems that they just don’t truly honor OpenTable reservations. You want to to check with them about that.
We had to wait for our water, chips and salsa which usually you get immediately at a Mexican restaurant even before waiter comes. Waiter came and we explained we had a person with food allergies and wanted to know what could be eaten without gluten. We didnt get an answer from anyone so that person did not eat. The food arrived cold. We asked for it to be reheated one person ate his cold because he was so hungry. They were completely out of Bud-lite on tap on a Friday evening? Waiter accommodated our bill because food was cold. We had to wait a long time even for our bill. The taste of the food was good
We went before the Taylor Swift concert. The food, as usual, was wonderful. The server was charming and efficient. El Cholo is one of my favorites.
First visit to Pasadena location, food was awful and different than Orange County locations, which have been consistently outstanding every visit.
