Great food …great experience. I’ll be back!
Excellent service and food. Lots of people for a Monday night. We will return.
Food and drinks were outstanding. Service was great and we had a great time.
Fantastic food and unique creations.
Great meal, drinks, service and jazz musician. Fresh sour dough bread came in handy with the mussel bisque (added sherry) which was fantastic.
Hidden gem in downtown San Diego. I had the ribeye, which was cooked to perfection, and my beautiful lady had the scallops. Best scallops ever. Music only added to the wonderful ambiance. Service was perfect. Oh, and the muscle bisque is world famous for a reason. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation at Dobson’s.
Last minute reservation. Server was very attentive. Moved us away from music at our request for better conversation noise level. Good steaks and salads. Great value
Very nice place on a side street. This was the first time here, and they have a great happy hour from 3pm-7pm. The food was good the drinks were good.
Food and service was great!!!
Super good! Especially the mussel bisque en croute.
Celebrated my husbands birthday. Live music was a nice addition.
The lamb chops were great. The mussel bisque was outstanding. Service was excellent. The beet salad was a miss. Don't bother. My Manhattan drink was watery and weak. Overall we were very pleased and plan to return!
Wonderful anniversary dinner!
Great waiting staff that went out of their way to make a special evening for us. And delicious food!!
We have been dining at Dobson's for many years and always look forward to our next dining experience. Lunch is delicious and dinner is the best ever. The Mussel Bisque soup is to die for and the Lamb was amazing. Highly recommend!!
an actual hidden gem in downtown, a perfect place for a dressed up date night! we were surprised with live music and it was amazing!
The mussel bisque en croutte was awesome. The blue crab cake amazing and 100% crab. Our entrees so delicious. Truly a hidden gem.
We’ll done. Nice restaurant . Great food and service.
We have lived in San Diego for 30 years, but this is the first time we dined at Dobson’s. It was ok. The staff was friendly and helpful. The ambience is classic, old school downtown bar and grill. Would have enjoyed that more if it weren’t for Covid. The food was adequate but over priced. The mixed green salad was drowning in vinaigrette, but at least the vinaigrette was tasty. The beet salad was very good. The crab cake was tasty, but could have used more crab. The scallops were well prepared, but were set on a meager set of greens. The chocolate mousse cake was ok, but seemed to come straight from the refrigerator. Probably will wait another 30 years before going back.
First time at Dobsons. The restaurant is a great location to the Civic Center and we were attending a concert that evening so location was perfect. Because of the crowd of concert goers, it took us a long time to get waited on and served. Or, perhaps there wait staff is very thin which seems to be the case these days with people not coming back to work. However the wait staff was courteous and seemed to be working very hard, I think there was just not enough of them to go around.
The food is magnificent. I had the scallops and they were excellent but didn't come with anything substantial on the side so make sure you order a salad or appetizer if you have the scallops, or if you want more than a light meal. My husband had the steak and it was fantastic. Wine was pretty expensive but good wine list.
The waiters were completely slammed but we were one of the first ones there and it took several minutes (20?) until we were asked for our drink order. The food came out almost an hour later. I was a food server when I was younger. Getting drinks to a table is a great way to help them wait.
It’s a small restaurant and the seating is undersized and cramped. Sadly. The food came out cold.
Also, the entrees had very small portions.
I will not go back again
Great little bar/restaurant within walking distance of the Sand Diego Civic Center and Balboa Theatre. Older exterior with a old school historic feel.
They have an amazing Happy Hour (4-7pm) which we took advantage of.
We had the Charcuterie Plate, Guacamole & Brie Bruschetta and Steamed Mediterranean Mussels (absolutely amazing flavor), along with their house wine.
They got a little busy around 6pm making service a touch slow but still the staff was friendly and took care of us.
Make reservations if you go. It’s worth checking out.
I was on a date from Palm Desert, CA. Dropped in with a reservation and was sat at the bar…
Then a nice gentleman saw us in the vibe and noticed we wanted to be around music. He took us upstairs and we enjoyed our dinner with live music. Friendly staff, very fun 🤩
Thank you to everyone that made this night special for us.
Dobson's is a favorite spot of mine. My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time together and will definitely be returning in the future!
Visiting San Diego, picked restaurant from Open Table based on menu and reviews. Great experience!
My fiancé had a great lunch here. We’ll be back! I made a reservation easily via open table and my fiancé and I are so glad we visited and dined at Dobson’s. We had the poutine as an appetizer, the French Dip, and Tuna melt. Instead of fries as our side, we both had soup. Mussel bisque for me and lentil for my fiancé. Everything was delicious, portions large and filling, and hospitality cozy and classic. Highly recommended!
Great old school bar and restaurant. Very reminiscent of New York eaterys. I never knew such a place existed in San Diego. Great happy hour prices and items. Best mussel bisque I've ever had. Short menu but everything we had was very tasty and ample portions. The staff are personable and service is great. Lots of old time downtown customers at the bar. This place is now on my list of must return.
Great place friendly staff delicious food
Been going to Dobson's since 1988. Service and food always outstanding. Go especially for the Mussel Bisque. Sorry that we were not able to see Paul. Maybe tonight, going back again for round two!
We only had a short period of time before our flight out of San Diego and wanted a great meal before we left and WOW this place is a hidden gem. We visit SD often and hadn’t been here and will most definitely be back. The ribeye was cooked to perfection and sliced like butter…delicious and the sea bass was also excellent. The sourdough bread is a must. The staff was incredibly polite, professional and grateful and the ambience was perfect.
Very charming, cozy place with attentive service and great food. Very glad we found it while visiting San Diego.
I have always loved Dobsons!
The food is consistently excellent. I can never go here without ordering the spectacular mussel bisque, it's never disappointed me!
The bread they serve is delicious. And the menu is diverse and appealing to foodies.
The service is attentive and caring. This last visit there was a man playing music/singing upstairs. He was great, playing mellow music such as Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel at a volume you could really enjoy yet still hold a conversation.
Can't wait to go back.
Live the food and service. Mussels are the best.
Every aspect of our visit, a reunion with an out-of-town friend, was fabulous: superb food, great service, friendly and warm ambiance. We three shared three appetizers (mussel bisque, escargot, and shrimp/mushroom plate) and three mains (wild mushroom ravioli, shrimp scampi, and bone-in pork chop). We left raving about how wonderful our experience was.
The service was great the food was great the value was great I will be back
Old school fine dining experience - loved everything about this place - food is excellent- a must try!
We highly recommend the mussel bisque and the steamed mussels :-)
Very old and small place. We ate upstairs overlooking the bar area…place was ok, but the food was fantastic!
Food was delicious and setting was cozy. Will be back!
Great ambience, quality food, a little slow on the service, but that's standard nowadays with restaurants struggling to get people to work. Nice place, has some history, recommended.
Great smaller restaurant in downtown San Diego, French-inspired cuisine in a bistro like setting with a bar which could be out of a movie set. The food was really excellent and very attentive service. Certainly a restaurant I plan to return to when in San Diego.
