Fantastic food, but a very noisy restaurant - no soft furnishings: hard wood floors, stone and plaster board walls and tall ceilings. To be fair to the restaurant, we did go at 7pm on a Friday night before Christmas, so it was full of large groups of people celebrating. I would go back at a quieter time as the food was very good - the two of us just found it hard to hear each other, and ironically I has requested a quiet table!
Let's get real here guys - this is a very average but clean Indian restaurant. It is well positioned off Tottenham Court Road and the staff were pleasant but the previous rave reviews are a total exaggeration. We had a perfectly acceptable meal before the theatre but it is nothing outstanding and just had the normal 'run of the mill' Indian food.
Super impressed with the food esp as our punjabi relatives had never sampled South Indian/Tamil cuisine.Thali was the perfect choice to sample lots of veg and non veg dishes
They were very busy so took some time to get us drinks but are so warm and lovely we didn’t mind and the food made up for it!
Recommend and would go again!
We love the South Indian food, the central location, the huge dosas and the affordable pricing. We don't love the very noisy restaurant, the rather sullen service from some (not all) waiters and the fact that they marked us as a no-show two days after our reservation so we had to chase the points we were owed.
The food was tasty, not very hot when it arrived though. The service was poor, my guests commented on it being cheeky that a service charge was added. Though the food was good I wouldn't recommend as things such as repeatedly forgetting drink orders was awkward.
This restaurant produces a varied menu of very flavoursome choices.
The Staff are attentive to personal preferences and helpful with suggestions on the level of spice and what to accompany a dish with.
My only disappointment was that despite the service being swift and attentive, the actual temperature at which the meal was served, was luke warm. However, I still enjoyed it, and left nothing for the dog.
The Chettinad isn't an ordinary Indian restaurant. The cuisine is from the tiny Chettinad region in the centre of Tamil Nadu and has differently flavoured dishes to those usually associated with South India. The staff and charming and thoughtful and the chef deserves a gold medal.
I've been here a few times - it's good South Indian - nicer ambiance than the places on Drummond Street, and still very good value. On this occasion, although the restaurant wasn't full, they staff clearly were in a hurry for us to leave, which was annoying, but the food is good, they were helpful regarding the dietary requirements of one of our party, the location is convenient and I'm sure I'll be back.
Our first visit to Chettinad - but I'm sure it won't be the last. We love South Indian food and this was an excellent meal. The Dosas were great and the spicy flavours of our lamb and fish main courses were tailored to our tastes. Service friendly and welcoming - though a little disorganised as we kept being asked the same questions by different staff, and it also took a number of requests to have the wine glasses removed. Overall, a place worth visiting.
It is a mystery why this place has such good reviews. Yes it has good vegetarian options but it is a South Indian restaurant so it would. There are much better South Indian restaurants in London. The Gobi65 was glowing in the dark due to the levels of food colouring used. It's not bad but it's not good either.
