Not the CAV you remember from years ago. Kind of cramped, very loud, food was good but nothing unforgettable. Service was ok, but drink orders were wrong and attention was a little lacking.
Good to see the old place again but won't be back and can't really recommend it.
The man who determines table seating had some difficulty finding our reservation and then put us at the worst possible table particularly considering I indicated it was a special occasion. The one chair was not a real table chair—who likes to feel like they’re sitting on the floor lower than your partner— and the distance to my girlfriend and the tables on either side made any kind of meaningful conversation nearly impossible. When I complained they put me one table over but same issue. When I complained to the chief of table assignments he was clearly annoyed. He started to pull over an adult size chair from a normal table when he saw a cozy twosome in the corner with a coach and cushions big enough for two and a normal chair if less intimate seating was desired and begrudgingly offered it. It was perfect as was everything that followed including the service and food. The waiter was very attuned to our desire to take our time and was very pleasant and polite. The chief should take instruction from him.
It was perfect - best dirty martini I have ever had. With 5 people and everyone raved. Go here!
We enjoyed dining at CAV very much. The food was interesting and delicious. There were many good choices with veggies and seafood. The ambiance was nice with many stories about history, antiques and art. It is quirky and slightly bohemian in flavor. It was a fun night.
Great atmosphere, great food. However, hubby thought the portions were inadequate for the price!
Delicious food and great service!
We celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary at Cav. The food and the atmosphere were amazing! Our server, Jonathan, was terrific. We’ve been coming to Cav for over 20 years and this dinner was the best yet.
Awesome. Salmon outstanding. BlackBerry merlot sorbet remarkable.
This was brunch with friends. Menu has breakfast and lunch choices, those it seems more on the lunch side, rather than breakfast side. Between the four of us we had: two omelettes, steak and eggs, Belgian waffle and French toast. Everything was delicious. French toast is very rich as it is covered in maple syrup. The omelettes came with herbed potatoes and bread. The food was timed perfectly, giving us time to talk and catch up. I really like how this place allows for a conversation, as it's not noisy.
The food and atmosphere has been phenomenal since they opened 2 decades ago.
The most unique restaurant ambiance in Providence found in the most unique location FOR a restaurant in Providence. And none of that sentence is hyperbole. Oh yeah, and it just so happens the food is delicious as well! Our party of four enjoyed the Walnut Brie appetizer and then ordered the Duck Confit, the Parmesan Encrusted Chicken, the Wild Mushroom Risotto and the Poulet Aux Poires. Each entree was the perfect portion size and so delicious the rest of the evening saw each of us not being able to help but sample each other's meals...
Great meal! Great restaurant!
The only comment that I have is about the scallop, shrimp, risotto dish that I had. I thought it was very good but not outstanding because of the balsamic vinegar glaze, which to my taste, did not go well with the scallops. The sweetness of the shellfish and the sweetness of the vinegar did not complement each other; the combination detracted from the deliciousness of each of the components. Otherwise, we enjoyed our meal tremendously.
BTW, I did mention this to our waiter but I don't know if the message was communicated to the chef.
For years this restaurant has been one of Rhode Island's best serving consistently excellent food with service to match.
We came for dinner with a friend. We had reservations and were seated right away. The place did not seem crowded, but that could be because of the holiday weekend. Food was delicious and my steak was cooked just right. The appetizers and dinner were nicely spaced out, giving us time to eat and chat. The server was attentive but never disruptive. I actually really enjoyed the fact that you can have a conversation there - too many places now are so loud you can't hear what your companions are saying. The CAV's set up and acoustics are really great for enjoying a conversation with others. The prices are on the high end so check the menu online first. to avoid any surprises.
the bus person was inconsiderate, tossed the bread basket on the table and made noise when clearing items. Otherwise outstanding.
Fabulous! Great food, unique atmosphere, terrific service
Second visit to Cav and will definitely be back. Cavatelli with shrimp and cannelloni beans was delicious as well as the scallops and chicken special. Food was just outstanding
Quick dinner before a show downtown. Drinks were great, Brie appetizer was delicious and arrived quickly. Entrees of Lobster pasta and Scallops & risotto were abundant and flavorful. The only hiccup was I had ordered an entree salad and a cup of lobster bisque which arrived together. By the time I finished the bisque my salad was warm and wilted, and quite unappealing. It was rare sesame crusted tuna that started out delicious, but I had to eat something first, and the bisque won. Had the soup been served as an appetizer it would’ve been 5 stars all around. Overall, a great meal, very pleasant server and a lovely decor.
As special as always!
A charming and unique restaurant with excellent, knowledgeable service, superb food, and good wine selection. My only complaint is that is a bit noisy, but not intolerable as far as noise. This is a place worth visiting more than once a year, with different people to enjoy together.
First time in a while at Cav. Business lunch. Grilled vegi salad with quinoa was outstanding. Great flavors. Busy but easy to have a conversation. Remains a little gem.
Dinner for a birthday - good to very good food, attractive and distinctive ambiance, professional if a bit indifferent service. Have been there four times and will go back.
We dined at CAV for Father's Day. We drove from MA to meet our college-aged children living in Providence for the summer. The atmosphere was a comforting, casual elegance. We had a great time laughing all throughout dinner. The food was very good; the rib eye special was outstanding and the wine list had something for everyone across multiple price points. We all thought we'd like to go back for lunch. It would also be on my list for a pre-theater dinner.
We were initially seated at the table closest to the restroom . Very unpleasant . The manager swiftly moved us to a table in the front room which was terrific! Food was delicious save the crab cake. The concept was great, pistachio encrusted, however crabmeat was off. Thank you for a lovely Father’s Day!
We took our husband for Father's Day Brunch and he really enjoyed it! Very nice atmosphere and the food was amazing. Definitely would go again.
CAV was amazing on every level. The food was so delicious, our server was so helpful and nice and we so appreciated his thoughtfulness. The timing of each dish was perfect. The cocktails were great the wine choices were excellent. I can’t say enough good things about CAV. Wish I lived in Providence so we could go more often!!
I hadn't been to this restaurant in years, so I was looking forward to trying it now that they have evolved and/or changed the menu from back then. The ambiance was always wonderful and eclectic. The menu had MANY great selections, which was not the case when I was there last. I had the goat cheese croquettes and the duck confit and my other guests each had a different menu choice, all of which we loved!!!
I will definitely come back again and more often!!!!
CAV never disappoints! I wish I lived closer so I could be there more often.
Nikko was an excellent server. Attentive, and friendly. The Brie appetizer was delish. The Sophia salad was also enjoyed. The seafood with lemon risotto was also delicious. Eclectic decor was interesting. Outdoor seating was available, but too chilly. We came from MA and would definitly would go back.
Have been going to CAV since the late 1980's. I have introduced this restaurant to many folks over the years. The dining experience has always been consistent, except sadly to say this most recent visit.
It was a Tuesday night at 6pm, and there were few other parties. One party we noticed was served before us, although they were seated after us. Our meals did not arrive until after 7pm. Bread took a long time to get to our table. We asked for more bread when the meal came, but had to ask a second time. The ravioli was ordered by 2 in my party, and they both said it was cold. I urged them to say something, but they declined to do so since it took so long in coming.
Overall, slow service on what clearly appeared to be a slow night. Not sure why. We usually go here for both our birthdays, but my husband is hesitant. I told him it was probably was an unusual an off night , but thought you should know since you send this questioner out. Thank you kindly.
We had a fantastic dinner at CAV!
We've already suggested you folks to several friends.
Already planning our next visit!
Food and service were great. Loved the ambiance of the Cav. I felt we were rushed a little. We were there for our Anniversary and in and out in 1 hr and 15 min. Would have liked to linger a little longer.
Wonderful food and great atmosphere! Very cool place!
Lemon risotto exquisite. Only place in area to have blackberry merlot sorbet!!!
Great food, fantastic service (Jonathan was terrific), and a great environment. We couldn’t ask for more.
Beautiful restaurant, the service was great, and the food was excellent. We were there on a Sunday night when the facility was lightly attended so the noise level was no problem.
This was our first time at the CAV and we would definitely recommend it for a dinner date. The restaurant has an eclectic ambiance. Very comfortable and fun. The menu has many choices along with the specials of the day. The food was very good as well as the service. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Great brunch! Plenty of parking, beautiful venue, terrific food.
