Cassia is a terrific Asian restaurant in Santa Monica. The flavors just burst with life. It's like I'm eating fine dining in Southeast Asia. I drove 20 miles from the Eastside to try this place and it didn't disappoint. The ambiance is spectacular, with a gorgeous bar. Great people watching. The dishes are creative, my favorites being the Chickpea Curry, the Mizuno salad, and the Cod. The desserts are spectacular, especially the Tangerine pudding. Everything about this place is wonderful. I'll be making the trek from Silver Lake again soon!
Cocktails - creative, fresh, fun
Salads - green papaya very fresh, great
Entrees- beef dish& rice, where's the beef! Lots of rice...expensive $32 for the portion...
Service- food did not come out in timely fashion around mid-meal. Item was taken off invoice because of lateness.
Dessert- pudding cup & cookie great
This was second visit to CASSIA and perhaps my last. The food suffered from too much of everything -- fat and spice especially. Perhaps the kitchen has changed and the new crew is lazy.
The oysters were good but not all great, in fact a few should not have been served. The Pig Tail was a mash of way too much fat and too little flavor and a bit gross. Dumplings were overspiced and under filled and the charcuterie fried rice based like spam and bologna flavored .
This is not an inexpensive restaurant and I think perhaps, the founding chefs should get back into the kitchen.
Cassia is consistently outstanding. Really creative, delicious food rooted in SE Asian traditions, good cocktails, and outstanding service to match. I wish the tables weren't so close and the noise levels so high, but alas. It's really, really good.
Great restaurant. Service was very good: attentive but not intrusive. Menu suggestions were right on. Food was excellent and inventive. A bit pricey but worth it. Only issue is that it's loud and group sitting next to us were shouting to hear each other. I would definitely recommend this as a very good choice for dinner.
We were very disappointed with our dinner at Cassia. Most of the dishes served were burnt, except the Pot au Feau. Requested unburnt and non-spicy dishes but were served them anyways. Our order was immediately forgotten and the excuse given by our server outlandish, and condescending. Despite high expectations, a terrible experience at this fusion confusion spot.
I found the restaurant extremely noisy and expensive.
We also were advised to order 4 to 7 meals for 3 adults be a child. We ordered four and had so much left over food it was a waste of both money and food.
The staff were friendly and some dishes were good whilst others were fairly average.
My waitress Carol was a huge ambassador for the restaurant, such a sweetheart and so on it... and I had never met her before, so this isn't a friend doing a plug.
Carol recommended the Grilled sea bass with turmeric and lime-- it was the best piece of fish I've had since Le Bernadin in NYC.
My husband and I tried Cassia after a few recommendations from friends. The sea bass was delicious and the coffee pudding was fantastic but the food was too spicy overall. It was very expensive too. 2 people without alcohol and before tip was $140!
Cassia is one of Los Angeles' most exciting restaurants. Consistently warm and gracious hospitality, outstanding food and smart service. Our experience the other night was nothing short of exciting and rewarding. Very happy to see what we experienced at the beginning is in place nearly a year later (or is it more now?).
Fascinating "takes" on Asian themes, such as a charcuterie plate consisting of various salumi done in Chinese, Viet, etc, styles. Beef rendang is typically made with chopped meat; here it was done with a full piece of short rib. All excellent, if pricey. Fortunately, we ate outside, because the inside was unbearably noisy as we left.
Cassia is a do not miss restaurant, especially for those for whom our restaurants are tending to seem too similar. The food is spicy, but the staff is great and knows their food and will help you find the low/non spicy dishes.
We fear we will have to repeat our favorites as they are so good and not try other dishes: Grilled sea bass that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, fried cauliflower, eggplant, lime custard, though more a mousse than a custard, chocolate banana tart. The green papaya salad is very good but way too spicy for us. We are resolved to try their special lobster next time due to all the positive reports about it. These wines are good: Red zin (classic), Sean Thackeray, Folkway

Not worth the price at all.
Ordered the eggplant which was quite tasty but very small portion. The grilled sea bass was quite tasty as well, but again pricey.
Pot au Feu was disappointing, more like a soup. Definitely not worth the price.
Overall the food is underwhelming, nothing special.
We specifically requested to have the fish served first then eggplant and pot au feu; instead they served everything all at once in the tiny table (for 2) we had.
Dessert was standard, nothing special(coffee?cake) but tea was very good.
Thought that we should try Cassia. Good reviews and interesting dishes. We got there early which is good because when it is busy it's hard to get attention from the staff. The ambience is Ok. The cuisine is sort of Fusion asian with an emphasis on Vietnamese and Singaporean. I've been to both places and had better dishes. In terms of the food, some dishes were good (Spicy Lamb) but others were meh (pork belly vermicelli). It's a bit too pricy for food of this type and the cramped tables and noisy environment didn't make it relaxing at all. Overall I would say it's over priced for what you get and the service is OK, but I couldn't feel that my $150 was well spent. Probably the location and costs for staff ( they charge 3% for the staff health insurance). I probably won't repeat.
Truly a wonderful evening. Food and ambiance were exceptional, service was attentive. Recommendations from our server were received exactly as described, tasted phenomenal. It was our anniversary dinner and the evening will be remembered in part by the meal we enjoyed.
