It was my first time at Bencotto, the waiters were super helpful & attentive while helping make great suggestions. The food is DELICIOUS, best food I had all weekend. It’s a beautiful restaurant that I would highly suggest going to. Only downside is their mixed cocktails are all liquor with little to no flavor. But overall, Bencotto is great & I will be coming back very soon.
All the food and wine were amazing but the lasagna was the best we have ever had!
Best Italian food since I have been to Italy. Order the special cheese WHEEL! Amazing!!!!
Great service! Food was yummy. Had a great date night there with my partner :)
The waiters and receptionists are helpful and welcoming.
Our 5th time there and we'll be back.
The reviews for the restaurant where very flattering and overall positive. Unfortunately we could only say it was grandly overrated . The food was at best mediocre and overpriced. The presentation of the food was subpar. Very disappointing, very bland. The tiramisu was absolutely horrible. We will never recommend nor eat there again when we visit San Diego again.
We were literally sitting on the sidewalk on an incline, making for very uncomfortable seating. The amount of people walking by us (because we're on the sidewalk), that were not restaurant patrons was very annoying. Therefore, the service was lacking and slow. The food was good, but the overall atmosphere took away from that. If we had better seating and the service was more attentive, this would have had a chance at 5 stars.
Absolutely AMAZING experience! The best Italian meal I've had in my LIFE. Next time we are in San Diego, we're eating here! Thank you Bencotto!
If freshly made chewy noodles are your thing, get in here. Clean and spaced out seating in and outdoors. Great service and a full complete with a bunch of wines. I want to come back for the noodles prepared in the large cheese wheel!
Very busy, but excellent food and service. Ate outside and our table was near those waiting for a table, so was a bit noisy. BUT I would go back in a heartbeat! The best Italian food in San Diego!
Felt rushed to leave
This is a go-to restaurant whenever we are in San Diego. The pasta is house made and sauces are excellent.
We were in San Diego for Labor Day weekend. Our first time away from home since COVID. Glad we made reservations. We were seated immediately in their outdoor dining area. Tables were comfortably placed. Our waiter was very attentive and made great recommendations. Tagliatelle with lamb sauce was amazing.
The service was horrific. No friendliness or connection. Our water was empty for the majority of our meals and our receipt wasn’t itemized correctly. It was supposed to be a nice birthday dinner for me but it was really disappointing
Food was absolutely incredible, so were the drinks. Ambience was great considering the COVID-19 precautions. They did however forget that we were celebrating a birthday, and we didn’t want to be obvious about it so we didn’t mention it. Oh well, maybe next time. We’ll definitely be back!
My favorite italian restaurant. Gnocchi Neri is my favorite dish.
Pasta was fantastic! Would come back again just to eat the lamb ragu tagliatelle and the stuffed gnocchi.
Great food and service!
My wife and I have eaten at Bencotto several times over the years and thoroughly enjoyed it. The homemade pasta and sauces are usually spot on. This time I ordered the Osobucco and was very disappointed. It was tough and chewy. If you’ve ever ordered it, it should fall off the bone, not the case this time. Because of our past experiences I would still recommend Bencotto and will still give them our business. Maybe it was to early in the day to order that dish and it hadn’t had time to braise correctly.
Given these COVID times it was good as it can be. The Table was on a slant because the street is on a hill, but other than that the food was good
Wonderful spot for a date night! I'm actually not the biggest Italian fan in the world, but this place knocked my socks off. The waiter Dan was very helpful (glad he talked us into the stuffed zucchini blossoms), and the owner Valentina came by twice. Crab ravioli and lasagna were amazing, best tiramisu of my life, great cocktails too! Spend some money but defintely worth it.
Love Bencotto and can't wait to go back. They are challenged with Covid restrictions and we had to eat outside, but they are doing a great job. We were a little late to our reservation and they were holding out table for us. Our waiter was the bartender (poor guy) and he was super busy, but other waiters helped him take care of us. Food was amazing.
Food was bland and underwhelming. Would not recommend.
The waiter was very sweet, friendly and available. However he was not knowledgeable on any of the Italian wines you serve. I think your teams should be educated on Italian wines. It would help clients order what they enjoy when unfamiliar and would improve the experience. It would also be good for business
Americanized Italian food, fine to experience once, would not recommend if you’re looking for a light & more authentic Italian experience. The pasta dishes were very heavy.
We had the Rigatoni Tartufo & fungi (truffle cream sauce) & Tortellini di Zucca (butternut squash ravioli, with butter & sage sauce). Both dishes were heavy with cream. Pasta was overcooked & soggy like what you would get in a microwaveable pasta.
The calamari was good & the service was also good!
Great food. Great service
Tasteless Caesar salad, pesto pasta had a puddle of pesto sauce under the pasta.
Amazing experience for our first time. They didn’t have an alcohol for my cocktail so they actually went to the restaurant next door and got me some! The food and service was amazing. My new favorite place! Italian food that does Little Italy justice
Portions were small for such a big price
I had heard good things about Bencotto. we got there really early and benefited frm a few free nibbles with our wine. I think the appetisers were good. the meatballs - polpetto and the super soft octopus - polipo - were yummy. So you can imagine we were really looking forward to our main course pasta. what a disappointment. I worked and lived in Italy and Tortelloni stuffed with pumpkin should be lightly coated with a little butter and sage. but this was a really thick cream sauce with a lot of sweet crisy bacon atop. it was all too rich and too sweet and nothing like the real Italian version which is actually just light and satisfying and a perfect balance of sweet and savoury. My son's mushroom and truffle rigatoni was swamped in cheese and bechamel. We sent it back, the spaghetti bolognese looked like it came from a bottle.
We gave up on our mains and tried the canoli and chocolate mousse. Both very good. Service was attentive, cannot complain, but truthfully these are not authentic Italian pasta dishes, they are heavy, overly sauced and highly calorific and that is not really what Italian food is like. Otherwise they would all be the size of houses. And they are not. I'd like to see more vegetable anitpasti and some of the lighter, fresher pasta dishes on the menu. If you are a lover of real Italian cooking, then this is not for you. sorry. But if you want a few early evening nibbles with a cocktail - it is perfect.
Food was pretty bland but probably just what I ordered the pizza chicken, waiters were super friendly though and the seating outside was pretty refreshing.
Bencotto did a fantastic job with social distancing and the food and service were excellent as usual
Everything was great! Delicious food and great service
Very good will be back
Bus boys were courteous and wonderful. Wish I could say the same for waiter
We came to this restaurant for our anniversary! The pasta was amazing. My husband had the crab ravioli and I had fettuccine with chicken bacon with Alfredo sauce. Service was good. Will definitely return when we are in town.
Best dinner ever! Food was delish... Make sure you eat the fried bread and the pasta in the parm wheel!
Nice lunch in the Little Italy section of San Diego. All street side dining as all California restaurants continue with a no indoor dining policy. Not very busy at lunch as not much tourism now.
Our Insalata Mista salad and Caesar Salad were both served crisp, cold and delicious.
The pasta here is all homemade. Both of our dishes, Butternut Squash Tortellini and Ttuffle Ravioli were served both hot and delicious.
During the heat of the summer I would suggest dining here for dinner only.
