Service was poor. She basically took forever to take our drink order. As well as food order. Drinks then took forever to come. Food came without silverware or small plates and we were sharing. The raw vegetables came about 15 minutes after the mezzes/appetizer spreads came - and I do not eat the bread. Basically unimpressed.
Food wasn't as good this time
Barbounia never stops to amaze me whenever I go there. Notable dishes: Octopus, Potato Ginnochi, Duck Shawarma, Roasted beets and the Taboon lamb meatballs.
One suggestion to the chef- try serving garlic shrimp in a different dish as that hot skillet overcooks the shrimp while being served.
Keep up the great work!!!
I absolutely loved the food here. I enjoy the culinary experiences available in NYC. Being a native New Yorker I am very critical of where and what I eat. I was very pleasantly surprised with my find here. I had a casual business meeting set in the Union Square/Lower Midtown are I went on Opentable and searched out a moderately priced well reviewed place based on neutral cuisine.
What we got was anything but average. The food here was fantastic. The appetizers were fresh and delicious. The entrees amazing. I had the Duck Shawarma... Yes you heard me correctly, Duck Shawarma. I ordered it on a goof and was amazed by the sumptuous pieces of duck (NO FAT) over shredded duck (Again No Fat). I usually hate duck. Others in my party also raved about their meals. One had the Scallops and another the Bronzino. Both their plates seemed extremely clean after the meals.
Needless to say we didn't get to talk business until dessert. We were too busy gorging.
The service was very attentive... There was a large crowd and very fast turnover.... The meals and drinks would be there almost instantly.
Servers were knowledgeable & helpful in making a choice. Very polite & attentive .
Food delicious. A large selection of wines, covering prices for all budgets.
We ordered a few drinks and appetizers. The ceviche was well done, the duck kebobs were lack-luster, we also ordered the octopus, which was TERRIBLE. The octopus was the reason for low rating, it was extremely overcooked, hard to chew, and tasted gross.
Overall meal was very overpriced, will not be returning.
Having eaten here once or twice a year for more than a decade, it seems time to write this place off. Although the food is good, the value has worsened over the years, the management has gotten lazy - there’s no wine being produced in Greece that merits being on the ‘by the glass’ list anymore? - and the service is clumsy (reaching across people to refill water glasses, delivering large share plates without serving utensils, leaving finished starter plates and utensils on the table until the main course arrives) and inattentive. After waiting more than 30 minutes for our main course, we learned from another server that our server had gone on a break. Really? This place has been, and could be, much better. Too bad the owner isn’t interested.
Overall trendy spot for those that want to get noticed. People dress up to impress each other (and themselves!).
The fried cauliflower batter was so heavy - so it absorbed a lot of oil.
Your falafel seemed to have heavy taste of fennel? Try Sido's falafel - Upper West side - its a small hole in the wall - but so fresh and light and crisp!
You ran out of the grill platter by 8.30pm on a Friday evening!
We had to have the lamb baked in bread which was excellent.
Sorbets were very good - the traditional middle-eastern dessert we ordered was too sweet.
Our waiter an oriental looking young man was fantastic -
Ambience excellent - will come back for your grill platter.
One of the best brunches in the city. Bottomless bellinis and the shakshouka are a must.
Vibrant & delicious, a comfortable gem! Had been to Barbounia for dinner several years ago, but never for brunch. What a treat! The personalized latte was not only artistic but amusing - it made our guest feel as if he was special. The mushroom omelette was so plentiful, I couldn't finish. Portions are generous, while the presentation & taste, amazing! A place to return again & again!
Every dish was excellent. Great variety of middle eastern tapas from vegetarian to seafood. Desserts were great, bar menu reasonable. A little on the loud side but not unusual for Manhattan. Even the staples like hummus, etc had a little twist to make them more interesting.
Service was friendly and efficient. Would definitely return!
This was my third time at this restaurant and really disappointed. My wife, brother-in-law and his friend went to dinner on 9-2-18 at around 5:30. We have three changes of service. The third and final server took all the dinner orders and forgot me and walk away. I called her back and then she took my order. When the main course came the order for my brother-in-law and friend was not correct. They did not split the dinner course as he had requested. After dinner, we got the bill they charged us for the $70 bottle of wine that I originally ordered but they stated that they did not have. I ordered a different wine at $70 for which the charged me. When I pointed out the mistake they did just took the price off the original bill. They nice thing to do would have been to apologize and maybe free drink on the house but that was not the case. I will not be going back to this restaurant and the $300 dollar amounts that I have paid all three times is not worth the food and service.

I am new to the NYC area and have been trying to find great non-chain spots to visit for nice dinners. This spot was a hit for me. The atmosphere was great, food was great, and drinks were great. I had a squash lobster Risotto and it was amazing. The only thing I would critique is that it did take a little bit of time for our server to greet us. I would have rather waited at the bar until they were ready. I will still be coming back though!
Food is excellent. Service needs work. Tables with men or couples get preference. Had to flag down a waiter to order a beverage and then asked the maitre d to have someone take our order as those seated after us had already ordered.
Lovely service. Pretty spacious. Can get noisy. Yummy food a bit pricey. Overall very civilized and enjoyable
Our waitress was aggressive and clearly annoyed that we were not ordering more - it was 96 degrees out and humid!
The appetizer were tasty but very small in size .the fish dishes were great but my the fish tajine was overpriced for what you got.
Our waiter was lovely and friendly and the restaurant honored our request for another table.
Family in town
It was so loud! And so busy. Food was good but more expensive than it should have been. Servers were attentive and helpful.
Good was amazing over all! Love going to this place
After proposing to my fiancee last year, we came to celebrate with lunch at Barbounia. Now 1 year later, we were back to celebrate her first birthday as my wife. Needless to say, we love this place! The food is delicious, the decor is beautiful, the staff is attentive and helpful. We plan to be back again soon.
We liked it for what it was, but we don't really go to this kind of restaurant, so we're not the best to judge. It's very big and very loud. Many people like this kind of experience and scene, but we're more intimate-space diners.
The food was very good. Fish and soup were especially well-prepared. Their revisionist Greek salad was just tomatoes, olive and feta. The quality of the ingredients was good, but it wasn't super special. We didn't get dessert or apps, so we can't vouch for them, but everything looked great, and I'm confident that most things were probably well-prepared.
I did think service was exceptional. The waiters were really nice, and when they misquoted the price of a special entree, they just comped the whole thing, which they didn't have to do at all (I practically begged them to let me pay the misquoted price, $25 instead of $37, but they insisted it would be $0!)
Food was delicious. Expensive but worth it and big portions. Beautiful decorations.
Another wonderful dinner at Barbounia. Restaurant Week made it easy to try new dishes.
The noisest restaurant I have ever been to. Even after the large crowds are gone they then blast the music.
Great fun spot for brunch!
Food is pretty good and I especially love the mushroom risotto and the octopus appetizer. Our server was fantastic.
Very good food, excellent wait-staff, airy and light, just a little noisy. We moved after being seated because the speaker with loud music was overhead. Absolutely no problem. Found a table in a quieter corner.
Great bar, if you just want to stop in for a drink and nibbles. Very good list of Rose wines. We ordered a bottle.
good food but just WAY too noisy. Impossible to talk without screaming.
Great food, excellent service! Came for restaurant week (dinner menu), very impressed and satisfied
The restaurant is scenic and the food was good. However, the noise level was ear shattering. It was almost impossible to have a conversation. I had to shout so loudly that I am hoarse today.
Three of us went for a restaurant week get-together and had a splendid evening. The food was outstanding. I had the mussels (delicious!) to start, friends had a crisp refreshing salad. For main, I had dorade, with a lovely Mediterranean medley of peppers, lemon and spices; one friend had chicken kebab, which she enjoyed, the other the lamb with black rice (very good). Service was attentive and friendly. The only problem was the extremely high noise level, which made talking difficult. A couple of times we requested the music be turned down a little, but it did not make any difference.
Food was good, but service was not. Waiter made a sour face when we told him we were interested in only small dishes (beacuse we read the entrees were just “ok”, and the smaller dishes are better). We ordered about 10 for three people, so in terms of total price it was probebly more then if we would have ordered entrees as well, not that it should make a differnce, I should be free to order what ever I want without the waiter making me feel bad! And he kept asking us if we want anything else, which was annoing - there is a way to do that without making the guests feel bad, and I expect waiters at a place like that to know how to do it.
This place is a revelation. Every dish was tasty, made from fresh and beautiful ingredients. The desserts are impeccable. Service is fantastic. Can’t wait to return.
Awesome place for boozy brunch. Great bellinis that get refilled often
We really enjoyed restaurant week here. The perfect girls night get- together. 😊
The ambiance is even better than it looks in photos. The food, exceptional! Wonderfully smooth hummus, the Restaurant Week mussels appetizer, chicken kabob entree and desserts were fantastic. While the restaurant is very loud, we enjoyed the energy. Cocktails are pricey, but expertly crafted and mixed.
