If you are in Cozumel/Playa Del Carmen/Cancun...GO HERE!!! Don't get the king crab app, but the restaurant, though humid, is beautiful!!!! The staff is top notch. Many diverse menu options. Beverages are very good. In my opinion, this place is a MUST VISIT if you are in this area. Do it, you won't regret it! If you get there early, like my date and I did, go for some coffee at Don Giovanni's a block down..good stuff.
We had a group of 6 for this dinner. Long steep and uneven stairway down to the dining room. The cave is very interesting, almost doesn't look real!
Dinner was very good. I had the Surf and Turf and was cooked just as ordered, lobster was not huge, but large enough. The margaritas were a little strange...not sure I would order another. There was a cucumber taste to it???
Service was very good, but his English was not the best. We did get our information across.
Dining in a cave was definitely a different experience, the site is stunning, the cocktails and food were delicious, the service was perfect, Marcella our waitress took great care of us. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in Playa del Carmen who wants to get away from the noisy party streets and have a romantic dinner!
I was very disappointed this place after all of good things that I read about it. First of all the greeter was not at all friendly. Secondly as soon we were seated we noticed that there was a very weird smell and after sitting there orfor a while saw fans in several places of restaurantrestaurant because we had now figured out that a/c was not working at all. Thirdly it took a while for our waiter to greet us and when he finally did he was sweating profusely because the A/C was not working. He took our drink order and food as well but he was in a hurry seemed like. We got our drinks and it was pretty strong but can't say it was best drink I've ever had. Then our food finally came out and the taste was not at all what I expected. My food had no flavor so I asked my waiter for salt and pepper and he only brought pepper because he didn't understand much English. My tuna was very, very, very dry. I would not recommend this place anyone ever.
The location is unique; however, the overall experience was not worth it. The food was over complicated and not well-executed. The cave setting is great but they haven't set up for a pleasurable dining experience. The waiter automatically brought you a flashlight with your menu. You couldn't see what you were eating which further intensified your annoyance with a 40 ingredient plate. The service was mediocre. We had to ask several times for bread, the salt and pepper never came and weren't offered a glass with our beers. Finally, once dinner was over it took 20 minutes to process our credit cards. For some odd reason my crab bisque had alfalfa sprouts in it. Not sure why because the bisque itself was delicious. The addition of the sprouts killed the appetizer overall. Remember, keep it simple! We arrived with a stroller and was never offered assistance in going down or up the 30 or so steps. In finality, Alux is a restaurant that thinks classy is dim lights, overthought and pretentious food, poor service, and expensive prices.
Very unique restaurant in terms of dining in a cave that you can explore, so from an ambience perspective it is very cool and distinctive. Service was marginal and food was very poor. Everything we ordered was poor, we didn't finish anything we ordered. Cut the meal short and don't bother with dessert after the appetizers and entrees disappointed so much.
Alux is very different. It is a restaurant in a cave! That is the scenic view.
The menu is great! It includes game, fowl, seafood, and some meat dishes.
Victor was our server and he was very helpful. And, he makes a great Mayan Coffee!
The cave is warm and humid and although they have fans strategically located, it is a good idea to dress lightly.
I had been wanting to visit this restaurant for years and actually made a plan to visit Playa del Carmen just so my husband and I could have our 7th wedding anniversary at this restaurant. Food was not good. That being said, I'm still glad we went as the experience was still really cool.
Alux was an amazing restaurant. The ambiance alone is enough to pay them a visit. I loved the tour of the cave, the drink selections as well as the food choices. They had something for everyone. Living in Los Angeles we see some really nice restaurants, but Alux was very unique. A Must See!
With much high expectation, and now much regret I have to admit, this was one of the most disappointing not worth the money spent ($200) dining experiences in Playa. The setting of a cave is pretty much the only thing that is going for it. The overpowering smell of Mildew in the air was a turn off for me. I kept my rescue inhaler handy. The food was quite expensive yet very mediocre or less in quality, preparation and presentation, service was bellow standard, or poor, drinks were watered down and substandard, you can get a better mojito on the beach. Overall a very disappointing experience that left us wishing we were at Sur, where for half the cost you can get consistently superior service, lively setting, great food and delicious drinks (including vino) for dis I mention half the cost.
In the spirit of Mayan legend of Alux, I have to say that it must have been Alux who's at fault. ;)
Best advise as a frequent high scale dine, Alux could use a serious management look and revamp
They didn't have our table ready, then they offered us a table for six, but put two extra plates between the two tables (where the two tables get together), so you couldn't seat because the thick wood where on the way.
There was no air conditioner or fans for us, then the were going to put us in the lounge, by this time we were soak in sweat.
The set is very pretty, we were celebrating a 50th birthday, and decided to go somewhere else.
The ambiance was phenomenal, due to being situated within a cave. However, outside of the surprisingly flavorful fried cheese dish, the entrees were all slightly underseasoned. That said, every one of our mixed drinks and dessert were fantastic, and were more than worth the visit.
The service was wonderful, food presentation was beautiful, the solo guitar player was good. Defenitley It was great and different dining experience eating inside the cave. I was surprise that being inside a cave it was not cold it was humid, I would say that was the only draw back of the restaurant; overall I highly would recomended
It was more than we expected. Usually when a restaurant is built around an attraction...you typically only get the attraction and the rest of the dining experience is dismissed. This was not the case at Alux.
From the warm greeting coming down the cascading stairs in the entry, To the attentive service , and throughout each course of well prepared and presented food; this was truly an Exceptional Dining Experience.
We will be back...
The food was terrible and not good. When we told the waiter the citrus dressing was sweet and they gave us the honey one they said "oh." The parmigiana cheese crisp was not crispy and was damp like it was sitting out in the humid air all day. The menu wasn't up to date, items on it not available anymore. So took the recommendation and had a steak. The sauce with the veritables tasted like a bottle of salt was in it. My dates steak medallion was so rare that if it was raw. When we told the waiter he told us that it was how they come. I asked for the private area which is an extra $30. I told them no rose pedals an they were all over the floor around the table. Personally I would not recommend this place! Save your money and go somewhere else to eat!
