Nice setting but food needs improvement. Service was decent. Did not arrive hot - too expensive for what you get
Dinner was excellent. Service was very good and the ambiance was intimate but not too stuffy.
Great to see a traditional atmosphere and br consistent!
Out of town visitors looking for specific unique Georgetown / DC experience and found it. Lovely all around.
My husband & I celebrated our wedding anniversary here and it was perfect. They specially addressed the menus commemorating our anniversary and delivered them alongside a very kind note. We were placed at a cozy table where the waiter created a course offering tailored to our tastes. The wine selection, crab bisque, foie gras, rack of lamp, tenderloin and apple turnover were exceptional highlights of an overall superb meal. This is definitely the place to take someone for a memorable evening.
We had never been to this great restaurant but LOVED it. We ate in the bar/club room section which offers the same menu as the main restaurant. While it’s not cheap, the drinks were generous and the apps very large. Most importantly all three of us loved EVERYTHING we ordered.
A great evening at our favorite DC restaurant. Have not been since leaving over 15 years ago. Would love to see a retro menu from Washington’s Camelot period during the Kennedy presidency
Ordered a dish but a different one came out. He must have not heard me completely. Both dishes had the same type of fish but one was a stew the other by itself.
Well, I wend there with High Hope.
I am not sure if it because we ordered too little, or there is unspoken rule for going to this kind of restaurant that you have to order a lot to show something.
The waiter double checked several times that if we only want one main dish, with three people, and two small plates and no alcohol. We are that hungry and we did not want to waste the food. And we do not drink in general.
And when we were having our food, the waiter is looking at the direction of us, which is really uncomfortable.
After, when serving a complimentary dessert, he only gave knife for each one, not even a fork. We did not even touch the dessert.
It is really a bad experience especially in this kind of restaurant and I vouched for this restaurant in front of my friends. Really really really DISAPPOINTED.
Birthday so great
Wonderful food, service and ambience. Highly recommend
Surprisingly limited menu with average food for a shiny price. Environment is great. Not what I expected.
Our first visit. Great from start to finish. Good food, good servers, good wine sommelier/manager. The full package!
Simply outstanding. The food and service where superb. Our waiter, Anil, was knowledgeable and very kind. The barman, Christian, is a class act. The lamb and duck dishes are first rate. We will definitely will come back.
Delightful space and location. Terrific food and outstanding service!
Fantastic service and great food selections. The crowd is more on the sophisticated side so I would not recommend with young children; which was not an issue with my visit.
I would go back.
Quiet place for a good comfortable evening.
We took only starters and the portions were great.
The service was perfect.
We had an outstanding waiter. The food was inventive and amazing but not pretentious. It is expensive but quality ingredients, strong service, and calm ambiance are worth it.
We went there for our anniversary dinner and got the tasting menu with wine pairings. The service was amazing, they paid a lot of attention to detail, made modifications as needed for allergies and made us feel like we were valued.
Excellent evening with special menu paired with wines. A wonderful dinner with good service and a personal touch.
Service was impeccable and food was delicious! Awesome experience!
We have enjoyed our dinners at 1789 for the last 20 years, the food is amazing every time we eat there. Thank you taking such good care of us!
Love this place! Amazing food and service in a quaint Georgetown atmosphere.
This is an old style house, actually several houses that have been connected. They were built in the Federal style in the mid 1800s. There are several types of rooms that you can go to but the more traditional one is the green room with a fireplace. It has much more charm and a romantic atmosphere. There is no question that the atmosphere here is lovely and it is a romantic place to have dinner.
The service was top of the line and they had taken note that this was an anniversary. Our menu was personalized and said happy anniversary at the top of it. Also when our dessert came, it came marked with chocolate that said happy anniversary. Everything about the service was excellent.
The rack of lamb gets the most votes from everyone and I would agree. I asked for it to be rare and even though the waiter looked at me a bit askance because he wasn't sure I really meant it, it came exactly as I wanted. It was delicious. It is also 2 very large sections of lamb on the ribs. The duck also was excellent, cooked just to perfection, and the yellow fin tuna tartare was also excellent. I was a bit disappointed in the fig salad because there was so much endive in it and only a little piece of goat cheese. But the goat cheese and the figs together were just outstanding. I didn't hear anything about the foie gras but the lobster bisque was very rich, creamy and absolutely delicious. As a dessert the hazelnut torte cake was a bit unusual. It was basically a hard pancake on top over a round slab of chocolate with hazelnut cream on top of it and four meringue type chocolate pastries on top. It was very good but it was unusual.
Key now is that on Tuesday night there is no corkage fee so you can bring your own wine. however there is a very extensive wine list.
Outstanding! Fabulous service and the food was delectable. The atmosphere was wonderful!
The whole experience from being met by Greg to your receptionist ordering a taxi everything was perfect.
When I went to get my MBA at Georgetown University from 2000-2002 I always passed the 1789 restaurant but never went inside. Well, a couple of weeks ago I took my wife there for our anniversary. I expected the experience to be high-class and it did not disappoint.
I remembered the server from her time at the Cheesecake Factory, and she was very attentive and friendly throughout. We had the tasting menu, and it was just declicious. My favorite would have to be the duck breast (though the dessert came a close second due to its sheer size).
I highly recommend 1789 Restaurant for any special occasion.
Service was great!
Food was prepared well! Very tasty and satisfying. Enough options for every pallet.
Thank you for making a special night special!
We ate dinner here for my husbands birthday and it was the perfect way to celebrate! Our waiter made sure we were well taken care of the whole evening. The meal was perfectly paced-never did we feel rushed or like we were left waiting. The ambiance was romantic and perfect for date night. The food...oh my goodness. The food was so good. Everything we ate was perfect that evening and we felt our meal was worth every single penny. I would recommend this to anyone seeking a quiet, romantic evening in the city.
For years, I've heard about this restaurant but to be honest, it was completely overrated. We ordered the duo of berkshire pork and the tea smoked duck breast as main courses... both of which were highly recommended from the waitor but neither was that great or even memorable. It was pretty clear, yet no one took notice, that the duck meal was barely touched/eaten by my significant other. However, the lamb and gnocchi was quite good and the organic tequilla old fashion and 1789 sidecar cocktails were excellent. The chocolate hazelnut desert wasn't anything to rave about either... it was difficult to break apart and the puff pastry tasted old/bland. I really dislike writing negative reviews but I really did expect substantially more from such a well known establishment.
Greatly enjoyed the experience and plan to return. Christian was outstanding is helping us enjoy the experience with his suggestions and service.
One of our favorite dining experiences while visiting DC. Everything about 1789 was sheer perfection. Will definitely eat there again next time in DC
Love the atmosphere of 1789 restaurant. Met beforehand in the new bar lounge area, would love to eat there next time. Lovely ambience - very elegant but comfortable.
Phenomenal service and food.

Chose 1789 for our anniversary dinner and weren't disappointed! The staff and servers were friendly and made us feel special! Food was amazing, fresh, and unexpected flavors for all food and drinks.
Wonderful restaurant. Enjoyed my lamb chops and Caesar salad very much, My husband also enjoyed his halibut and lamb gnocchi appetizer. Great service and a very cozy restaurant in a Georgetown town house with tons of history. Would definitely go back when we visit the D.C. area.
We had such high hopes and wonderful memories of 1789...but we left very disappointed. The dinner was $300 for two, which is fine...when everything is good. This was not good...food nor service.
